Mexican Xball League
The Mexican Xball League (MXL), also written as the Mexican X-Ball League, is a Mexican paintball tournament circuit offering X-Ball and three-player competition. Its published calendar includes events in Guadalajara, León, Monterrey, Querétaro, San Luis Potosí, Mexico City, Puerto Vallarta and Playa del Carmen.[1][2][3] MXL events share a PBLeagues archive with earlier Mexican Paintball League (MPL) events, but a precise date and formal announcement of an MPL-to-MXL name change have not been established.[1][4]
History
Earlier Mexican tournament series
A 2009 UNAM study describes PGP Masters Cup and Road To World Cup as earlier tournament series whose organisers combined their competitions in early 2005 to form Serial Mexicano de Paintball (SMP). The study discusses MXball separately.[12] This account does not establish that SMP or MXball was an earlier name for MXL.
Documented MXL records
The tournament archive records the 2016 MXL Guadalajara Open on 5–6 March 2016 at Quimera Sports & Events. Its entry information used the MXL name, linked to xballmexico.com and offered Ultimate Champions, Premier and Junior divisions.[5] An archived contact page from October 2016 explicitly identified the organisation as MXL Mexican Xball League.[6]
DYE's report Riot Wins MXL described the league as an affiliate of the National Xball League (NXL), reported Riot's victory over TJ All Starz at a Guadalajara event and linked to xballmexico.com.[7]
The 2016 MXL calendar comprised events in Guadalajara, Monterrey and Mexico City, followed by the 2016 MXL World Cup Latinamerica in Playa del Carmen on 8–9 October.[1][8]
National circuit and organisers
A Planet Eclipse report published on 16 September 2017 identified Arturo Andrade as organiser of the league's San Luis Potosí round at Tangamanga Park. It reported more than 40 teams across three divisions, including Caballeros Gringos from San Francisco, and appearances by American professional players Harrison Frye, Blake Yarber and Greg Siewers.[2]
In May 2018, DYE published Dan Norcross's account of playing with Mexico City Titans at the second MXL round in Guadalajara. He identified Quimera Sports as the host venue.[3] Quimera also appears as the venue for the 2025 MXL Guadalajara Open First Round, documenting its use across multiple seasons.[9]
Subsequent calendars continued to include Guadalajara alongside other Mexican cities. The 2025 MXL season listed five rounds in Guadalajara and León, while the published 2026 MXL calendar listed Guadalajara, Monterrey and León events.[1]
Annual round-ups
The following articles cover the seasons recorded in the shared PBLeagues archive. The 2014 and 2015 article titles follow that archive; they do not establish that every event was originally promoted under the MXL name. Contemporary MPL usage is documented separately.[1][4][10]
| Season | Programme covered |
|---|---|
| 2014 MXL | Five rounds in Guadalajara, Querétaro, León and Playa del Carmen |
| 2015 MXL | Four rounds in León, Querétaro, Guadalajara and Playa del Carmen |
| 2016 MXL | Four events in Guadalajara, Monterrey, Mexico City and Playa del Carmen |
| 2017 MXL | Five events in León, Guadalajara, San Luis Potosí and Monterrey |
| 2018 MXL | Five events in San Luis, Guadalajara, Querétaro and Monterrey |
| 2019 MXL | Five events in León, Guadalajara, Querétaro and Puerto Vallarta |
| 2020 MXL | Two recorded events in Guadalajara; the annual article also covers the league's COVID-19 statement and planned March opener |
| 2021 MXL | Five rounds in Guadalajara |
| 2022 MXL | Four main rounds and a separate Round 4 Minor event in Guadalajara |
| 2023 MXL | Four rounds in Guadalajara, Aguascalientes, León and Puerto Vallarta |

| 2025 MXL | Five rounds in Guadalajara and León |
| 2026 MXL | Ongoing season: three completed rounds and a scheduled Guadalajara final, as recorded on 1 November 2026 |
Event calendars and season standings are available through the league archive. The annual articles distinguish completed results, provisional standings and discrepancies in individual records.[1]
Earlier annual articles published under the MPL name are linked from Mexican Paintball League.
Competition
Division names and match formats have varied between events and seasons. The 2016 Guadalajara event offered timed X-Ball in Ultimate Champions and Premier, alongside a three-player Junior division.[5] The 2017 San Luis report described Junior as D5 race-to-two, Premier as D4 and Ultimate Champions as D3 Race-X; these are the labels used in that contemporary report.[2]
At the opening Guadalajara round in 2025, the published formats were:[9]
| Division | Published format | Game time |
|---|---|---|
| Ultimate Champions | X-Ball | 15 minutes |
| Premier | X-Ball | 12 minutes |
| Elite | X-Ball | 10 minutes |
| Junior | Three-player race-to-two | 2 minutes |
PBLeagues provides event registration records, placings and season standings. The availability and completeness of individual results vary; the shared archive's current league heading does not establish which name was used contemporaneously for every older event.[1][4]
Connection with the Mexican Paintball League
The present-day PBLeagues record numbered 120 contains both MPL-labelled events and later MXL events. The 2015 MPL León Open, dated 18–19 April 2015, retains the explicit title MPL LEON OPEN 2015, while the March 2016 Guadalajara record uses MXL.[1][4][5]
There is also a documented organising connection. Planet Eclipse's November 2014 MPL report named Jose Luis Alvarez, Arturo Andrade and Pablo Villegas as organisers; its September 2017 MXL report identified Andrade as the San Luis event organiser.[2][10]
These records establish a shared tournament archive, successive use of the MPL and MXL names, and an organiser appearing in reports under both names. They do not establish the date, ownership terms or legal mechanism of a formal name change.
MPL's April 2010 announcement documented affiliation with Paintball Sports Promotions (PSP), while DYE's MXL report described NXL affiliation.[7][11] Neither announcement states that a change of international affiliation caused the league's change of name.
