Road To World Cup

From WikiPaintball

Road To World Cup is a name used for paintball tournament programmes offering a route to the World Cup. Mexican records include a retrospective account of an early-2000s series and later events listed under Liga Mexicana de Paintball. Their organisational continuity has not been established.[1][4]

Early Mexican series

[edit]

Saraí Fuentes García's 2009 UNAM study dates the emergence of Road To World Cup in Mexico to approximately 2001. It reports that three Mexican teams received expenses-paid participation in the World Cup in Orlando, Florida, but does not name the teams or provide a dated domestic results table.[1]

The study states that the organisers of Road To World Cup and PGP Masters Cup combined their competitions in early 2005 to form Serial Mexicano de Paintball. It names Mario Khan of Xtreme Planet and Paolo Dezi of Planet Gotcha Paintball as the organisers involved.[1]

Brass Eagle programme and Mexican participation

[edit]

An announcement issued by Brass Eagle on 28 February 2002 described an international three-player Road To World Cup programme with feeder tournaments, regional qualifiers and a final. Mexico was included in its proposed regional programme, but the Mexican venue remained to be determined.[2] This announcement documents plans, rather than a completed Mexican tournament or its results.

A separate contemporary report submitted by Brass Eagle's Nathan Greenman to WARPIG records an international final at Challenge Park Xtreme in Joliet, Illinois, on 21 September 2002. Guadalajara's Team Furia won the event.[3]

These are the reported placings at the American final, not Mexican domestic season standings.[3]

The report also names Mexico's Section 8 Red and Section 8 Blue among teams awarded World Cup air tickets through a prize draw. Those awards were separate from the final's competitive placings.[3] The report does not identify these teams as the three unnamed teams in Fuentes García's account.

Later Mexican use of the name

[edit]

PBLeagues lists Road To World Cup events under Liga Mexicana de Paintball in 2023–2026.[4] Its April 2023 event information names Sykaryos Paintball in Mexico City as the venue.[5]

Year Events listed in the league archive
2023 Three: Dye, Eclipse and Recoil
2024 Four: Eclipse, Carbon PB, HK and Hormesis
2025 Four: Carbon Paintball, Eclipse, Recoil and Dye Paintball
2026 Four: Planet Eclipse, Querétaro, Mexico City and Oaxtepec

These are annual calendar records, not a reconstruction of the early series' seasons.[4] The shared name does not establish continuity with either the early Mexican series or Brass Eagle's international programme.
