Women's paintball in Singapore refers to the participation of women in recreational and competitive paintball in Singapore, including tournament players, referees, organisers and international representatives. Women were participating in Singaporean tournament paintball by 2006, and the country's first locally identified all-female team, Team Atrox, was introduced in 2008.[1][2]

Singapore subsequently developed international women's teams and dedicated competitions, including the Asia Girls Paintball International Championship (AGPIC), first held in 2017. Singaporean women's teams have also competed in Russia, the Netherlands and regional Asian tournaments.[3][4]

History

[edit]

Early participation (2006–2008)

[edit]

Women's participation in competitive paintball developed alongside the emergence of Singapore's early speedball teams.

In 2006, Jane Koh and Ben Seow established Red Sevens, one of Singapore's earliest competitive paintball teams. Koh subsequently helped establish Red Dynasty Paintball Park in 2007, which became an important venue for the development of tournament paintball in Singapore.[3]

A female player known as Elle was also among the early competitors associated with Red Sevens. Contemporary reporting in November 2008 described her participation in Malaysian tournaments, including the Malaysian Paintball Official Circuit (MPOC) in Penang during 2007.[1]

The introduction of the Singapore Paintball Novice Series (SPNS) in 2008 created additional opportunities for women to compete domestically.

PSG Charlie and Team Atrox (2008)

[edit]

The second round of the 2008 Singapore Paintball Novice Series, held at Red Dynasty Paintball Park in June, featured PSG Charlie, an all-female team formed by Filipino expatriates living in Singapore.

PSG Charlie was one of eight new teams entering the tournament, which attracted 15 competitors. Contemporary reporting specifically highlighted the team's participation in the predominantly male competition.[2]

On 26 November 2008, the Singaporean paintball publication Paintball in Singapore 101 introduced Team Atrox as Singapore's first locally established all-female paintball team.[1]

The team was led by a player known as Grimreaper, who had competed in all three rounds of the 2008 Singapore Paintball Novice Series, a Malaysian tournament and other local competitions.

The same contemporary report identified several female players associated with Singapore's early tournament community, including Barrel, Snowflier, Noraini, Mad Devil, Elle, Wee Cheng and Ann.[1]

International development (2010s)

[edit]

Singaporean women continued participating in regional tournaments during the 2010s.

Hafidah Abdul Hamid began competing in 2010, making her tournament debut with a women's team in Johor Bahru, Malaysia.

She subsequently competed internationally in Malaysia, Thailand, Russia and the Netherlands.[4]

In 2013, Singapore hosted the Malaysian all-female team Siren at the Singapore Paintball Series. The team's participation illustrated the growing connections between women's tournament communities in Singapore and Malaysia.[5]

International women's competitions (2016–2019)

[edit]

Singaporean women's teams participated in the Arena Moscow Girls Cup, an international women's tournament held in Moscow, Russia.

According to a March 2025 interview with Hafidah Abdul Hamid published by Berita Harian, the Singaporean women's squad finished second in 2016 before winning the competition in 2017.[4]

The Russian Paintball Federation's 2017 tournament records independently identify Singapore Paintball Women Team (SPWT) among the entrants in the amateur three-player division.[6]

In September 2019, Singaporean women also competed at the UPBF World Championship in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

Hafidah Abdul Hamid reported that her team finished fifth in the women's competition.[4]

Asia Girls Paintball International Championship

[edit]

The establishment of the Asia Girls Paintball International Championship was a major development in Singapore's women's tournament scene.

The concept originated in 2016, with the inaugural competition taking place in 2017.

The championship was organised by the team behind the Singapore Paintball Series and held at Red Dynasty Paintball Park.[7]

AGPIC was designed to provide a dedicated international competition for female paintball players, including those who ordinarily competed in mixed-gender teams.

The second edition was held on 4 August 2018, with organisers inviting female players from Singapore and overseas.[8]

The 2019 championship took place on 14 July at Red Dynasty Paintball Park in Bukit Timah.

The competition used a five-player electronic paintball format, with rosters of up to eight players and matches limited to seven minutes.[7]

The Singapore Paintball Series subsequently reported that the 2019 championship attracted seven teams and more than 40 female players.[9]

The organisers announced plans to expand AGPIC into Malaysia in 2020 through a partnership with NXL Asia. The available announcement does not establish whether that event took place.[9]

AGPIC also appeared in later Singapore tournament records, with participation at a June 2023 event documented in Paintball Media Magazine.[10]

Women's development programmes

[edit]

In addition to tournaments, Singaporean organisers have conducted development clinics for female players.

On 10 November 2018, Red Dynasty Paintball Park hosted an All Girls Paintball Femme Fatale Clinic attended by eleven women.

The programme was organised by Fidah Alice, founder of the All Girls Paintball group, and Aifa Ahmad of Grundy Sports Wellness.

Volunteer instructors included Jane Koh, Sheila Mullane and Mekk Hafizah.

Participants received introductory instruction in equipment handling, safety, shooting techniques, movement and basic tournament play.[11]

The clinic formed part of wider efforts to introduce more women to competitive paintball in Singapore.

Women in refereeing and administration

[edit]

Women have also contributed to Singaporean paintball through tournament administration, officiating and coaching.

Jane Koh

[edit]

Jane Koh was a co-founder of Red Sevens in 2006 and Red Dynasty Paintball Park in 2007.

She was involved in establishing the Paintball Association (Singapore) and helped develop the Singapore Paintball Series.

Koh was also involved in creating the Asia Girls Paintball International Championship in 2017.[3]

Shahirah

[edit]

A Singaporean referee identified as Shahirah served as a senior Singapore Paintball Series referee during the early 2010s.

In January 2012, she officiated at the Malaysian Paintball Official Circuit alongside other Singaporean referees.

Contemporary reporting identified Shahirah as the only female referee working at that tournament. She also supported the development of Singaporean referees through international assignments and training.[12]

Notable teams

[edit]

Teams associated with the development of women's paintball in Singapore include:

  • Team Atrox – Introduced in 2008 as Singapore's first locally established all-female team.
  • PSG Charlie – Filipino expatriate women's team competing in Singapore in 2008.
  • Singapore Paintball Women Team – Women's squad documented competing at the 2017 Arena Moscow Girls Cup.
  • Red Sevens – Early Singaporean tournament team featuring female players, including co-founder Jane Koh.
  • Siren – Malaysian women's team that competed at the Singapore Paintball Series in 2013.

International results

[edit]

Selected results reported for Singaporean women's teams include:

Year Competition Division Result
2016 Arena Moscow Girls Cup Women's competition 2nd
2017 Arena Moscow Girls Cup Women's competition 1st
2019 UPBF World Championship, Amsterdam Women's competition 5th

The results are based on the retrospective account of Singaporean player Hafidah Abdul Hamid published by Berita Harian in March 2025.[4]

Participation challenges

[edit]

Women's tournament paintball in Singapore has faced challenges associated with player recruitment, equipment costs and access to training facilities.

The organisers of AGPIC identified the relatively small number of female players on established Asian tournament teams as one of the reasons for creating a dedicated women's championship.[7]

In a 2025 interview, Hafidah Abdul Hamid also described the limited availability of suitable competitive paintball training facilities in Singapore.

She explained that international competition required substantial travel and personal commitment, particularly because of the limited opportunities to train and compete domestically.[4]

Despite these challenges, Singaporean female players and organisers have remained involved in international tournament paintball and regional development initiatives.
