Women's paintball in Malaysia
Women's paintball in Malaysia refers to the participation of Malaysian women in recreational and competitive paintball, including domestic tournaments, international club competitions and national representative teams. All-female tournament teams were documented in Malaysia by 2006, with several established teams competing in the country's national paintball leagues during the following years.[1][2]
Malaysian women's teams have participated in the Malaysian National Paintball League (MY-NPL), Malaysian Paintball Official Circuit (MPOC), Singapore Paintball Series and international competitions. In 2024, Malaysia entered the women's category of the United Paintball Federation (UPBF) World Championship for the first time.[3][4]
History
[edit]Early women's teams (2006–2008)
[edit]Women's competitive paintball was established in Malaysia by the mid-2000s, alongside the development of national tournament circuits.
One of the earliest documented all-female teams was Tornado Angels. A first-hand account published by Malaysian player Jeff Low on 6 November 2006 identifies Tornado Angels as an all-female team associated with Team Tornado at a Malaysian National Paintball League event.[1]
By 2007, women's teams were achieving results in the national league.
At the fifth round of the 2007 MY-NPL season, held at the Malaysian Paintball Academy in Petaling Jaya on 10–11 November, Sogo Ballbusters finished third in Division 2. Another team, Honey Bzz, finished fourth in the same division.
The tournament attracted 100 teams across its divisions, demonstrating the scale of organised tournament paintball in Malaysia at the time.[2]
A Singaporean paintball publication dated 26 November 2008 identified three established Malaysian all-female teams:
- Tornado Angels
- Venus
- Sogo Ballbusters
The publication described the presence of women's teams in Malaysia as an established feature of the country's tournament scene, contrasting it with Singapore, where the newly formed Team Atrox was being introduced as an early all-female team.[3]
Women in open tournament divisions
[edit]Malaysian women also competed in mixed-gender and open tournament divisions.
In January 2009, the Malaysian paintball publication Villain Paintball reported that a female player known as Wani, formerly associated with Honeybeez, was expected to join KL-Locked Down following the team's promotion to Division 1.
The report illustrates how female players could progress through the country's competitive divisions without being restricted to all-female teams.[5]
The Malaysian National Paintball League and Malaysian Paintball Official Circuit provided regular tournament opportunities, including five-player and seven-player formats.
Regional competition (2010s)
[edit]Malaysian women's teams also participated in international tournaments organised throughout Southeast Asia.
One such team was Siren, an all-female Malaysian squad that competed in the Singapore Paintball Series in 2013.
Contemporary reporting by Paintball in Singapore 101 identified Siren among the Malaysian teams participating in the second leg of the Singapore Paintball Series, alongside Throne and WTF Dragonz.[6]
These tournaments provided opportunities for Malaysian players to compete against teams from Singapore, the Philippines, Thailand, Brunei and other countries.
The wider regional tournament structure included the Paintball Asia League Series (PALS) and World Cup Asia, which were important fixtures in Malaysian tournament paintball during this period.
International women's competition
[edit]2024 UPBF World Championship
[edit]Malaysia entered the women's category of the United Paintball Federation World Championship for the first time in 2024.
The national squad was drawn from Thunderstorm, an all-female team based in the Klang Valley.
The ten-player squad was captained by Nurul Salwa Kamarul Zaman.
In an interview with Sinar Harian published on 20 July 2024, Nurul Salwa explained that players had been selected partly on their competitive experience and participation during the preceding year.[7]
The team travelled to Dreux, France, for the championship, held alongside the 2024 NXL European Championships.
Malaysia finished sixth among eight countries in the UPBF women's championship.[4]
Thunderstorm also competed in two additional divisions at the NXL European Championships:
- WNXL professional Xball: Fifth of six teams.
- WNXL three-player: Second of five teams.
The three-player squad reached the final before finishing runner-up to the Brazilian team Chernobyl Pink.[4][8]
2025 UPBF World Championship
[edit]Malaysia returned to the UPBF Women's World Championship at Dreux in August 2025.
The national women's team finished eighth among nine participating countries.[9]
Malaysia's Ministry of Youth and Sports recorded a grant of RM71,800 to Kelab Sahabat Paintballers for participation in the 2025 UPBF World Championship women's competition.[10]
Thunderstorm also returned to the European Championships, competing in the WNXL three-player division.
The team won seven of its eight preliminary games and advanced to the final, where it was defeated by Italy's Survivor Wolf.
Thunderstorm finished second among four teams, securing its second consecutive runner-up result in the WNXL European Championships three-player competition.[11]

Players and administrators
[edit]Women have also contributed to Malaysian paintball as tournament organisers and administrators.
Amber Wong began her involvement in paintball in 2009 and subsequently served as an elected committee member of the Malaysian Paintball Federation.
She worked on the organisation of World Cup Asia, the Malaysian Paintball Official Circuit and Paintball Asia League Series events in several countries.
After relocating to Europe, Wong became involved in the development of women's professional paintball, including the establishment of early Women's National Xball League Europe teams.
In February 2025, the United Paintball Federation announced her appointment as its Affiliation Liaison Manager.[12]
Nurul Salwa Kamarul Zaman captained Malaysia's women's squad at the 2024 UPBF World Championship. Her involvement was documented extensively in Malaysian national media during the team's preparations and participation in the competition.[7]
