Singapore Paintball Novice Series

From WikiPaintball

Singapore Paintball Novice Series (SPNS) was a Singaporean tournament paintball competition held from 2008 to 2009. It was the predecessor of the Singapore Paintball Series (SPS), which adopted its new name in 2010.

The inaugural SPNS tournament was held on 30 March 2008 at Red Dynasty Paintball Park. Seven teams participated in the original three-player competition, using rental paintball markers.

The series was developed to introduce novice players to competitive paintball and establish regular domestic tournaments in Singapore.

Organised with the involvement of the Paintball Association (Singapore) (PBAS) and Red Dynasty Paintball Park, SPNS expanded from three-player games at a dedicated paintball venue to five-player tournaments in public parks.

The competition held three tournament legs in each of its two seasons.

PSG Warfreakz won the inaugural overall series championship in 2008, while Red West won the 2009 championship.[1][2]

History

[edit]

Background

[edit]

Competitive tournament paintball developed in Singapore during the mid-2000s.

Singaporean players participated in competitions in neighbouring Malaysia, including the Malaysian Paintball Official Circuit and Malaysian National Paintball League.

However, Singapore had limited opportunities for regular domestic tournament competition.

The establishment of Red Sevens in 2006 and the opening of Red Dynasty Paintball Park in December 2007 helped create a foundation for organised speedball.

The Paintball Association (Singapore) was also established during this period to support the development of competitive paintball.

The Singapore Paintball Novice Series was created to provide an introductory competition for new teams.

Inaugural tournament, March 2008

[edit]

The first Singapore Paintball Novice Series tournament was held on 30 March 2008.

Seven teams participated in a three-player competition.

The original format used Tippmann A5 rental paintball markers.

The tournament was held at Red Dynasty Paintball Park in Khatib.

The series was intended to make competitive paintball accessible to players who did not own specialist tournament equipment.

Redlords won the inaugural tournament leg.[3]

The event established the beginning of a regular domestic tournament series.

SPNS 2008 Leg 2

[edit]

The second leg was held at Red Dynasty Paintball Park in June 2008.

Fifteen teams participated, more than double the number in the inaugural competition.

New participating teams included:

  • Carnage
  • PSG Bravo
  • PSG Charlie
  • Wargh! Birds
  • Red Shadows
  • Shinpu
  • Kamikaze
  • 20th Legion

PSG Warfreakz, a team comprising Filipino expatriate players, won the tournament.[4]

The competition involved cooperation between PBAS and Malaysian Marshals.

This was an important development because Singapore's tournament scene was still building its own pool of experienced officials.

The June tournament also demonstrated increasing interest in competitive paintball among local and expatriate players.

SPNS 2008 Leg 3

[edit]

The final leg of the 2008 season was held on 12 October.

Carnage won the tournament.

Mid Life Crusaders finished second and Damnation finished third.

Md Faris Bin Md Dawood of Team R.A.G. received the Most Valuable Player award.[5]

Carnage was led by Thomas Lee, who had also been recognised for his performance during the earlier season.

The team included experienced players associated with Singapore's developing tournament community.

PSG Warfreakz win the 2008 championship

[edit]

PSG Warfreakz became the first overall Singapore Paintball Novice Series champions.

The team participated in all three tournament legs and achieved two podium finishes.

Its accumulated points were sufficient to win the inaugural series championship.[6]

The team's success demonstrated the participation of Singapore's expatriate community in the development of domestic tournament paintball.

The 2008 series also helped establish teams that subsequently participated in Malaysian competitions.

SPNS 2009 Leg 1

[edit]

The second season began in early 2009.

The competition continued to attract both returning teams and new participants.

Red West won the first leg.

Contract Killers finished as runners-up.

Red West included students from Singapore American School and players with previous experience in recreational and tournament paintball.[7]

The team was formed specifically to participate in SPNS.

The 2009 season also included teams such as Dark Militia, Kamikaze, Evil Avengers, Death Mavericks and PSG Warfreakz.

SPNS 2009 Leg 2

[edit]

The second leg of the 2009 season was held on 17 May at Pasir Ris Park's Native Lawn.

It was the first SPNS competition staged outside a licensed paintball centre.

The event was organised by PBAS with support from the Singapore Sports Council and National Parks Board.

Thirteen teams participated.

The competition introduced a five-player format, replacing the three- and four-player formats used in earlier legs.[8]

The organisers promoted the event as an opportunity to bring competitive paintball into the community.

Red West successfully defended its Leg 1 title.

The leading results were:

Position Team
1st Red West
2nd Five-O
3rd Contract Killers
4th Dark Militia

Red West included players with experience in Malaysian tournament competitions.

Five-O was participating in SPNS for the first time.

The event also included an individual Top Gun competition, won by Sean Low of Death Mavericks.[8]

SPNS 2009 Leg 3

[edit]

The final leg of the 2009 season was held on 18 October at the Grand Lawn, West Coast Park.

Twelve teams participated.[2]

The competition was staged in a public park, continuing the organisers' efforts to increase awareness of paintball.

The leading teams included:

  • Dark Militia
  • Five-O
  • Red West
  • Contract Killers

Dark Militia won the final leg.

The tournament report identified Grant, nicknamed Houdini, as making the decisive play in the championship game.

Sharkil of Contract Killers received the Top Gun award.[2]

Red West win the 2009 championship

[edit]

Red West won the overall SPNS championship for 2009.

The team had won the first two tournament legs and accumulated sufficient points to finish first in the season standings.

Dark Militia won the final leg but did not displace Red West from the overall championship position.

The 2009 season concluded with the announcement of an important change to Singapore's paintball operating restrictions.

The organisers reported that the Singapore Police Force had removed the centre-barrier requirement previously applied to licensed paintball game centres.

This regulatory development helped create opportunities for competitive paintball formats closer to those used internationally.[2]

Transition to Singapore Paintball Series

[edit]

Following the 2009 season, the organisers removed the word "Novice" from the competition's name.

The Singapore Paintball Series began operating under its new name in 2010.

The rebranding reflected the growth of the player community and the organisers' intention to introduce more advanced tournament formats.

The new competition incorporated electronic paintball markers, additional divisions and larger public events.

SPNS should therefore be understood as the original phase of the Singapore Paintball Series rather than an unrelated tournament.

Competition format

[edit]

Novice participation

[edit]

SPNS was designed as an introductory tournament series.

The original competitions allowed players to participate without owning expensive tournament paintball markers.

Rental equipment and accessible formats helped new players gain experience.

The organisers encouraged the formation of new teams and participation by students, recreational players and expatriates.

Three-player and four-player competition

[edit]

The inaugural 2008 tournament used a three-player format.

Subsequent early competitions also experimented with four-player games.

These formats were suited to the developing player community and available facilities.

Five-player competition

[edit]

The 2009 Leg 2 tournament at Pasir Ris Park introduced five-player competition.

The change brought SPNS closer to the formats used in Malaysian and international speedball tournaments.

It also created additional opportunities for teams to develop specialist playing positions and coordinated strategies.

Series championship

[edit]

SPNS operated as a multi-leg tournament series.

Teams accumulated points across the season.

The overall champion was determined by cumulative performance rather than the result of the final leg alone.

This was demonstrated in both seasons.

PSG Warfreakz won the 2008 series without winning the final leg.

Red West won the 2009 championship despite Dark Militia winning the final tournament.

Participating teams

[edit]

The Singapore Paintball Novice Series included a mixture of newly formed teams and players with experience in Malaysian tournament competitions.

Documented participating teams included:

Not all teams participated in every tournament leg.

PSG Warfreakz

[edit]

PSG Warfreakz was a team of Filipino expatriate players based in Singapore.

The team won SPNS 2008 Leg 2 and the inaugural overall series championship.

Its success demonstrated the international composition of Singapore's early paintball community.

Redlords

[edit]

Redlords won the first SPNS tournament in March 2008.

The team was among the early competitive paintball teams associated with Singapore's developing speedball scene.

Carnage

[edit]

Carnage won SPNS 2008 Leg 3.

Thomas Lee was identified as a team leader.

The team's development during the inaugural season demonstrated the growing standard of local competition.

Red West

[edit]

Red West won the 2009 overall series championship.

The team included players associated with Singapore American School and experienced Singaporean tournament players.

It won the first two legs of the 2009 season.

Dark Militia

[edit]

Dark Militia was a new team during the 2009 season.

The team won SPNS 2009 Leg 3 at West Coast Park.

Its victory demonstrated the increasingly competitive nature of the tournament.

Tournament venues

[edit]

Red Dynasty Paintball Park

[edit]

The original SPNS competitions were held at Red Dynasty Paintball Park.

The venue opened in December 2007 at Bottle Tree Park in Khatib.

It provided facilities for training, introductory tournaments and recreational paintball.

The first SPNS tournament was held there in March 2008.

Pasir Ris Park

[edit]

Pasir Ris Park hosted SPNS 2009 Leg 2 on 17 May.

The competition was held on the Native Lawn.

It was the first SPNS tournament staged outside a licensed paintball centre.

The event involved cooperation with the Singapore Sports Council and National Parks Board.

West Coast Park

[edit]

West Coast Park hosted the final leg of SPNS 2009.

The tournament took place on the Grand Lawn on 18 October.

Spectators were permitted to watch without an admission charge.

The location helped introduce tournament paintball to the wider public.

Organisation

[edit]

Paintball Association (Singapore)

[edit]

The Paintball Association (Singapore) was closely involved in organising SPNS.

The association supported tournament administration, safety education and referee development.

Jane Koh served as PBAS president during the competition's early years.

Red Dynasty Paintball Park

[edit]

Red Dynasty Paintball Park provided the original tournament venue and commercial support.

The park's founders, Ben Seow and Jane Koh, were closely associated with the development of Singapore's competitive paintball community.

The association and the commercial park should be distinguished as separate organisational identities.

Refereeing

[edit]

Malaysian Marshals

[edit]

SPNS cooperated with Malaysian Marshals during the 2008 season.

The involvement of experienced Malaysian officials helped support the development of structured tournament officiating in Singapore.

Referee development in 2009

[edit]

In 2009, Singaporean referees participated in a Malaysian Marshal Level 1 certification course conducted by Junaidi Kalil.

The course involved six Singaporean officials.

Benedict Chen was identified as Head Referee during SPNS 2009.[8]

The programme contributed to the development of local refereeing skills and greater consistency with Malaysian tournament practices.

Later development

[edit]

The Singapore Paintball Series subsequently established its own local refereeing organisation.

These developments built upon the officiating experience gained during the SPNS years.

Regional connections

[edit]

SPNS helped prepare Singaporean teams for tournaments in Malaysia.

Players from SPNS teams subsequently participated in the Malaysian Paintball Official Circuit, Malaysian National Paintball League and other regional competitions.

In 2009, members of the Singaporean teams Wargh! Nuts and Wargh! Mavericks competed in the SX Sunday 3-on-3 competition in Johor.

A contemporary report identified Kevin Lee, Sean Low, Andrew and Daryl as members of Wargh! Mavericks.[9]

The team's performance demonstrated the growing competitiveness of Singaporean players in cross-border tournaments.

Historical significance

[edit]

The Singapore Paintball Novice Series was a foundational competition in Singapore's organised paintball history.

Its establishment in March 2008 created a regular domestic tournament pathway for novice players.

The series helped players develop competitive skills without initially requiring specialist tournament equipment.

It also provided a framework for team formation, tournament administration and referee development.

The involvement of Filipino expatriate players, Singaporean students and experienced competitors demonstrated the diverse composition of Singapore's early tournament community.

The transition from three-player competitions at Red Dynasty Paintball Park to five-player tournaments in public parks reflected the growth of the sport.

SPNS also helped establish relationships between Singaporean and Malaysian paintball communities.

Its successor, the Singapore Paintball Series, developed these foundations into a broader national tournament competition.
