Decay of Nations
Decay of Nations is a long-running American scenario paintball event series organised by SC Village in Chino, California. First documented in 2007, the event features large-scale, objective-based woodsball competition between two fictional opposing factions, UNA and EKRON.
The series developed from SC Village's earlier large-scale recreational paintball events, particularly Monsterball, and became one of the most prominent scenario paintball gatherings in the western United States. The organisers describe Decay of Nations as the largest scenario paintball event on the West Coast.[1][2]
The event incorporates extended battles, organised command structures, armoured vehicles, specialised scenario equipment and missions conducted across more than 100 acres of interconnected playing fields.
By September 2026, the series had reached its nineteenth numbered edition.[3]
History
Origins
Decay of Nations developed from SC Village's established tradition of organising large-scale recreational paintball events.
During the early history of the venue, Monsterball brought hundreds of players together for unusually large games across the park's extensive playing fields.
According to SC Village's historical account, Monsterball helped establish the format that subsequently developed into Decay of Nations.[1]
The earliest documented Decay of Nations event took place on 25–26 August 2007 at SC Village.
The Southern California scenario team Psycho Clown Posse recorded its participation in the inaugural event, identifying SC Village Productions as the organiser.[4]
The second edition followed on 22–24 August 2008. The series continued annually, with the third edition held in August 2009 and the fourth in August 2010.[4]
Development during the 2010s
By 2011, Decay of Nations had reached its fifth edition.
That year's event was included in the Great American Paintball Tour promoted by Tippmann Sports, alongside several other major American recreational paintball events.
The fifth edition took place on 27–28 August 2011, with surviving records identifying General Toklas and members of Psycho Clown Posse among the command staff.[4]
The sixth edition, held on 13–14 October 2012, was promoted under the title The World Is Yours.
Its fictional storyline involved the Ekron Corporation and United North Americas competing for control of advanced technology and dwindling resources.
Contemporary promotional material described participation by more than 1,000 players, vendors and representatives of the paintball industry.[5]
The series continued to grow during the middle of the decade.
The ninth edition, held in September 2015, featured the storyline Third World Power, which incorporated extraterrestrial technology, resource conflicts and political infiltration.[6]
Contemporary participant coverage estimated attendance at more than 2,000 players during the 2015 event.[7]
The tenth edition took place in September 2016, marking ten numbered Decay of Nations events.
Later editions
Decay of Nations continued through the late 2010s, reaching its thirteenth edition in September 2019.
The numbered sequence subsequently resumed with Decay of Nations 14 in September 2021. No numbered 2020 edition is identified in the available event chronology.
The sixteenth edition, held from 30 September to 1 October 2023, introduced the storyline Utopia's Stand, involving a conflict over the last surviving utopian city in a post-apocalyptic world.
James Scott commanded UNA against Eli Booth's EKRON forces.[8]
The seventeenth edition followed in September 2024 under the promotional theme World in Chaos.[9]
The eighteenth edition, held in September 2025, was promoted with Retribution branding. Its opposing commanders were professional paintball player Ryan Greenspan for UNA and Todd Martinez for EKRON.[10]
The nineteenth edition, titled Uprising, took place on 26–27 September 2026. Mark "Mr. H" Kressin commanded UNA, while Todd Martinez returned as EKRON general.[3]

Scenario and factions
Decay of Nations is based on a fictional conflict between two opposing armies:
- UNA: Traditionally represented by the blue team.
- EKRON: Traditionally represented by the red team.
The expanded name of UNA has varied in historical promotional material.
In 2012, the organisation was identified as the United North Americas. By the 2023 Utopia's Stand storyline, UNA was described as the United Nations Alliance.[5][8]
The Ekron Corporation has been portrayed as a rival political and military power seeking control of territory, natural resources and advanced technology.
The fictional storyline develops between editions, with successive events introducing changes to the political situation, military objectives and available technology.
Themes have included resource scarcity, technological warfare, political infiltration, extraterrestrial technology and post-apocalyptic survival.
The armies are led by appointed generals, supported by executive officers and organised scenario teams.
Game format
Decay of Nations uses a large-scale objective-based scenario paintball format rather than conventional elimination-based competition.
Players compete across multiple connected playing fields, with each faction attempting to capture territory, secure strategic locations and complete assigned missions.
The established game structure includes:
- Capturing and controlling designated flag stations.
- Recovering equipment, supplies or scenario objects.
- Attacking and defending fortified positions.
- Escorting personnel or vehicles.
- Completing missions assigned by the event organisers.
- Accumulating points towards the overall event result.
Each army's command staff coordinates participants and develops strategies for completing objectives.
Players eliminated during gameplay may return through designated reinsertion points, allowing extended periods of continuous competition.[11]
Specialised equipment
Decay of Nations is particularly associated with the use of customised scenario paintball equipment.
The organisers have permitted approved:
- Paintball tanks and armoured vehicles.
- Single-player armoured suits known as mechs.
- Defensive shields.
- Paintball grenades.
- Rocket launchers and anti-armour equipment.
- Other scenario props required for particular missions.
Tanks and mechs operate under separate elimination rules.
Specialised equipment is subject to inspection by event officials before it can be used on the playing field.[11]
The permitted equipment and technical rules may vary between editions.
Event programme
The principal event normally takes place over a weekend, with scenario competition on Saturday and Sunday.
Earlier editions have also included preliminary games, commanders' battles, night games and other activities.
Recent editions have followed a structured mission timetable, with different areas of SC Village used for successive engagements.
The event traditionally concludes with a final battle, followed by an awards ceremony and prize presentation.[12]
Venue
Decay of Nations is held at SC Village Paintball & Airsoft Park, located at 8900 McCarty Road in Chino, California.
The park provides more than 100 acres of playing fields, including woodland, open ground, constructed buildings and defensive positions.
Its extensive playing area allows multiple scenario objectives to operate simultaneously.
The organisers have also used military-style transport vehicles to move players around the venue.[2]
All nineteen numbered editions documented through 2026 were held at SC Village.
Participation and industry involvement
Decay of Nations attracts recreational paintball players, established scenario teams and participants associated with the wider paintball industry.
SC Village has promoted the event as attracting thousands of players, although independently verified attendance figures are not available for every edition.[2]
The event has also featured manufacturers, retailers and equipment demonstrations.
Companies associated with historical editions include Tippmann Sports, Empire Paintball, DYE Precision, Planet Eclipse, GI Sportz, HK Army, Ninja Paintball and other paintball equipment businesses.[5]
Camping, team staging areas, social activities and prize giveaways have formed part of the event's wider programme.
