Team Kiwi

From WikiPaintball

Team Kiwi is a name used by several separate New Zealand paintball teams assembled for international tournament competition, particularly in Malaysia during the 2000s and early 2010s.

The name has been associated with different groups of New Zealand players rather than a single continuously operating organisation. Individual players sometimes returned for later tournaments or helped assemble new lineups, creating connections between otherwise separate teams.

Identified iterations include a 2004 delegation to Malaysia, a separate team at the 2005 Asia Pacific Paintball Championship, a team led by Kyn Jackson that competed at multiple Malaysian tournaments from approximately 2008, and a later lineup associated with Peter Mumby and Jason Newport during the early 2010s.

The various Team Kiwi lineups were also part of a broader tradition of New Zealand participation in international paintball tournaments in Asia. A separate New Zealand representative team competed at the 2015 Paintball World Cup Asia Nations Cup, which can be regarded as an informal successor to the earlier delegations without being a continuation of Team Kiwi.

History

[edit]

Background

[edit]

During the early 2000s, competitive paintball in New Zealand was organised primarily through independent teams, commercial paintball fields and regional tournaments.

International participation generally required players to organise their own travel, equipment and tournament registration.

The development of international tournament paintball in Malaysia created opportunities for New Zealand players to compete against teams from Asia and other regions.

Team Kiwi became a recognisable name under which New Zealand players could assemble for overseas competition.

Unlike a conventional tournament team with a continuous roster, the name was subsequently reused by different groups. Some were connected through returning players or organisers, but there is no established evidence of a single organisation operating continuously throughout the period.

Team Kiwi 2004

[edit]

Formation

[edit]

The earliest identified Team Kiwi delegation travelled to Malaysia in 2004 to participate in an international paintball tournament at Xtion Paintball in Kuala Lumpur.

The team was assembled from experienced New Zealand tournament players.

The reported playing roster was:

Player Notes
Kyn Jackson New Zealand tournament player
Brendon Charles New Zealand tournament player
Peter Mumby New Zealand tournament player
Martin Dannefaerd New Zealand tournament player
Brian Thornley New Zealand tournament player and organiser

Michael Earley assisted with selecting and organising the delegation and accompanied the team to Malaysia.

Earley served as a referee on Field 2 and assisted with tournament commentary rather than competing as a player.

Tournament performance

[edit]

Team Kiwi finished fifth in the tournament.

The team was eliminated following a match against Mana Wave.

The competition brought New Zealand players into contact with members of Malaysia's developing international tournament paintball community.

An account of the tournament was published in January 2005, documenting the delegation's participation and experiences in Malaysia.[1]

After the tournament

[edit]

The 2004 team was assembled for international competition rather than established as a permanent national squad.

Its members subsequently returned to their respective domestic paintball activities.

Several individuals associated with the delegation later participated in other teams using the Team Kiwi name.

Team Kiwi 2005

[edit]

Asia Pacific Paintball Championship

[edit]

A separate Team Kiwi lineup competed at the 2005 Asia Pacific Paintball Championship in Malaysia.

The tournament began on 30 September 2005 at Xtion Paintball in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur.

The reported roster included:

Player Notes
Michael Earley Previously involved in organising the 2004 delegation
Peter Mumby Returning player from the 2004 Team Kiwi
Gavin Mumby New Zealand tournament player
Jason Newport New Zealand tournament player

Relationship to the 2004 team

[edit]

The 2005 lineup differed substantially from the previous year's delegation.

Peter Mumby returned as a player, while Michael Earley participated as a competitor after accompanying the 2004 delegation in an organisational and officiating capacity.

The team therefore had direct connections to the 2004 group but was separately assembled.

Its final tournament placing has not yet been established from available records.

Team Kiwi under Kyn Jackson

[edit]

Formation and leadership

[edit]

A further Team Kiwi lineup emerged around 2008 under the leadership of Kyn Jackson, who had competed with the 2004 team.

This iteration was distinct from the 2005 lineup and was associated with a further period of New Zealand participation in Malaysian tournament paintball.

Jackson played a central role in organising and leading the group.

Malaysian tournament appearances

[edit]

The Kyn Jackson-led Team Kiwi participated in multiple paintball tournaments in Malaysia.

Its involvement extended beyond a single appearance in 2008 and represented a recurring period of international competition.

The precise dates, number of events and individual tournament results remain to be established from contemporary registrations and event reports.

The team's repeated participation distinguished it from the earlier delegations assembled for individual competitions.

Playing personnel

[edit]

The team included Kyn Jackson and other New Zealand players.

Historical accounts associate the lineup with two brothers from the Raiders and players involved in paintball at Actions Paintball in Auckland.

The complete roster for each tournament has not yet been confirmed.

Because the group competed at multiple events, its playing personnel may have changed between appearances.

A single fixed roster should not be attributed to the entire period without event-specific records.

Relationship to earlier teams

[edit]

Jackson's involvement provided a direct personnel connection with the 2004 Team Kiwi.

However, the later team had its own leadership and playing personnel.

It should therefore be regarded as a distinct iteration rather than an uninterrupted continuation of the original delegation.

Later Team Kiwi lineup

[edit]

Early 2010s

[edit]

Another group of New Zealand players reportedly used the Team Kiwi name during the period when the New Zealand Paintball Players League (NZPPL) held events at Lock N Load Paintball in Auckland.

This places the reported activity around 2011–2012, although the exact dates remain unconfirmed.

The lineup was associated with Peter Mumby and Jason Newport, both members of the 2005 Team Kiwi delegation to Malaysia.

Newport was reportedly seen wearing a Team Kiwi jersey at Lock N Load during this period.

Possible Australian competition

[edit]

The later team may also have participated in tournament paintball in Australia.

The specific tournament, location, year and final result have not been established.

Its possible Australian participation should therefore be distinguished from the earlier Malaysian appearances.

Relationship to the 2005 team

[edit]

The involvement of Peter Mumby and Jason Newport provides a personnel connection with the 2005 Team Kiwi.

However, the later lineup appears to have been assembled separately.

There is insufficient evidence to establish that it operated continuously from 2005 or maintained the same organisational structure.

Relationship to the 2015 New Zealand Nations Cup team

[edit]

Paintball World Cup Asia 2015

[edit]

A separate New Zealand representative team competed in the Nations Cup at the 2015 Paintball World Cup Asia in Langkawi, Malaysia.

The tournament was part of the Paintball Asia League Series (PALS) and took place at the Mahsuri International Exhibition Centre from 30 October to 1 November 2015.[2]

Competing as Team New Zealand 2015, the squad finished 14th among 20 nations in the Open X-Ball division.[3]

Registered roster

[edit]

The PBLeagues team profile for Team New Zealand 2015 identifies the following registered personnel:[4]

Name PBLeagues classification
Benjamin Hunter Player
Campbell Thomson Player
Jono Clark Player
Liam Bratton Player
Marley Wright Player
Michael Earley Registered as player; served as support staff
Paul Howie Player
Vitaly Miheev Staff

The PBLeagues profile lists seven individuals in its player category and one in its staff category.

Although Michael Earley was registered as a player, his actual role at the tournament was as a member of the team's support staff rather than as a competing player.

Vitaly Miheev was registered in the staff category.

The distinction between registration and participation is relevant because historical tournament databases may list reserve players and support personnel within a team's player roster.

Relationship to Team Kiwi

[edit]

The 2015 New Zealand Nations Cup team was organisationally separate from the earlier Team Kiwi lineups.

However, it continued the broader tradition of assembling New Zealand players and support personnel for international tournament competition in Malaysia.

In this sense, the team can be regarded as an informal or spiritual successor to the earlier Team Kiwi delegations.

The connection was historical rather than organisational.

The 2015 squad did not compete under the Team Kiwi name and should not be included among Team Kiwi's tournament results or playing rosters.

Its participation is more appropriately documented as part of the history of the New Zealand national paintball team.

Team identity and continuity

[edit]

Separate teams using a shared name

[edit]

Team Kiwi was not necessarily a single organisation competing continuously across the years in which the name appeared.

Instead, it functioned as a recognisable identity for New Zealand players participating in international tournaments.

The known iterations were connected by returning players and shared involvement in New Zealand's tournament paintball community.

These connections are historically significant but do not establish uninterrupted team ownership, management or competitive membership.

Known Team Kiwi iterations

[edit]
Period Principal events Known personnel Distinguishing characteristics
2004 International tournament, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Kyn Jackson, Brendon Charles, Peter Mumby, Martin Dannefaerd, Brian Thornley Earliest identified delegation; finished fifth
2005 Asia Pacific Paintball Championship, Bukit Jalil, Malaysia Michael Earley, Peter Mumby, Gavin Mumby, Jason Newport Separate lineup with returning participants from 2004
From approximately 2008 Multiple tournaments in Malaysia Kyn Jackson; additional players not fully identified Recurring international lineup led by Jackson
Circa 2011–2012 Activity associated with the NZPPL period at Lock N Load; possible Australian competition Peter Mumby, Jason Newport Later reported lineup connected to the 2005 team through returning players

The 2015 New Zealand Nations Cup team is excluded from this table because it was a separate representative squad rather than a Team Kiwi iteration.

Returning players

[edit]

Several individuals provide connections between the different Team Kiwi lineups.

Kyn Jackson played in the 2004 team and subsequently led a later iteration that competed at multiple events in Malaysia.

Peter Mumby played in the 2004 and 2005 teams and was reportedly associated with another lineup in the early 2010s.

Jason Newport was a member of the 2005 team and was also associated with the later Team Kiwi lineup.

Michael Earley helped organise the 2004 delegation and competed with the separate 2005 team. He was subsequently involved in the 2015 New Zealand Nations Cup delegation in a support-staff capacity.

These overlapping connections illustrate how the Team Kiwi name and the broader tradition of New Zealand international tournament participation were maintained through personal relationships rather than a single permanent organisation.

Relationship to national representation

[edit]

Team Kiwi should be distinguished from officially selected New Zealand national paintball teams.

The use of the name reflected the nationality of its players but did not necessarily indicate formal selection or endorsement by a national governing body.

Likewise, a team containing former Team Kiwi players should not automatically be considered another Team Kiwi iteration.

Each tournament appearance should be identified through its registered name, roster and event records wherever possible.

Historical significance

[edit]

The various Team Kiwi lineups were associated with New Zealand's early international tournament paintball participation in Asia.

The 2004 and 2005 delegations demonstrated how New Zealand players could organise international competition despite the country's comparatively small domestic tournament scene.

The Kyn Jackson-led iteration extended this participation through multiple Malaysian events.

The later team associated with Peter Mumby and Jason Newport illustrates the continued reuse of the Team Kiwi name by different groups of players.

The 2015 New Zealand Nations Cup team represented a related development in the country's international paintball participation, although it was separate from Team Kiwi.

Collectively, these teams illustrate the role of informal player networks, returning competitors and international relationships in the development of New Zealand tournament paintball.
