2012 PSP season

From WikiPaintball

The 2012 PSP season was the national tournament season organised by Paintball Sports Promotions in the United States. Five events were held, beginning with the Galveston Island Open in March and concluding with the World Cup in October.[1]

Houston Heat won the professional season championship and World Cup. Severe weather disrupted the opening tournament, requiring its unfinished professional matches to be completed in Arizona before the separate Phoenix Open.[2][3][4]

Galveston postponement

[edit]

Heavy rain disrupted the Galveston Island Open. The divisional competitions produced their winners in Texas, but the professional programme remained unfinished.[2]

The outstanding professional competition resumed on Thursday, 19 April, before the Phoenix Open began. It included remaining preliminary matches and the elimination rounds. Tampa Bay Damage defeated Houston Heat 7–1 in the rescheduled final.[3]

These matches retained their identity as Galveston Island Open competition. They were separate from the Phoenix Open, held from 20–22 April, which Houston Heat won.[3][7]

PSP also reused Galveston's field layout at Phoenix. WARPIG's contemporary preview quoted PSP's explanation that severe weather had prevented the layout from being played as intended and that professional teams had been unable to complete their Galveston matches.[8]

Competition formats

[edit]

Professional teams competed in RaceTo-7. Divisions 1 and 2 played RaceTo-5, while Divisions 3 and 4 played RaceTo-4. Separate divisional five-player and open pump competitions used RaceTo-2.[5][9][10][11]

World Cup also included Masters X-Ball, Division 2 and Division 5 RaceTo-2, and open ten-player competition.[6]
