NXL Australia is an Australian tournament paintball series linking regional competitions with a national championship. It was documented under that name in 2016, with competitions associated with venues and organisers in the Australian Capital Territory, Queensland, Victoria and Western Australia.[1][2][3]

Its first national championship took place on 11 June 2017 at Paintball Games Coldstream in Victoria. RAW Empire won, followed by South East Cartel and Hustle.[4]

History

[edit]

Development in 2016

[edit]

The original league website described NXL Australia as an initiative involving Hot Shots Pro Shop, regional paintball operators and GI Sportz. Its advertised structure connected regional series to a national championship and offered the national winners an opportunity to compete at the NXL World Cup in Florida.[1]

Paintball Sports ACT advertised a four-event National Xball League series for experienced competitors during 2016, beginning on 13 March. This five-player programme was listed separately from its three-player beginners' competition.[2]

In Western Australia, WASP Paintball advertised a pre-season feeder event for 1 May 2016 at WASP Dizzy Lamb Park, ahead of its regional NXL series commencing in July.[3]

A contemporary participant report confirms that Queensland Round 1 took place on 10 July 2016 at TAC OPS, Rosewood. Instinct finished third in its division after defeating Prodigy in the third-place play-off.[5]

In Victoria, RAW Paintball announced that its third round of 2016 would also serve as the first Victorian NXL Australia round.[6]

First national championship

[edit]

The league's original national season was advertised as running from July 2016 to June 2017. Its initial arrangements proposed a championship in Canberra, but the completed 2017 national finals were held at Coldstream on 11 June.[1][4]

RAW Empire and South East Cartel drew their preliminary encounter and finished that stage equal first. RAW Empire subsequently defeated Cartel in the final. Hustle finished third.[4]

South East Cartel's contemporary report also identifies Apparition, HK Reaper Crew and Asylum as participants.[4]

Later competition records

[edit]

PBLeagues records NXL Australia events in Victoria and New South Wales during 2019, including national finals on 12–13 October. The published finals placings show Ballistics Unit winning Division 1 and SEC Grey winning Division 2.[7][8]

The league's surviving website also publishes a 2023 calendar covering Western Australia, ACT/NSW and Victoria. It advertises five-player competition across different regional divisions, marks the first Victorian event as postponed and leaves the finals date to be confirmed. These calendar entries establish advertised arrangements rather than completion or results.[9]

Competition structure

[edit]

The original national framework provided for teams to qualify through regional series. Teams could enter more than one regional competition, although a team qualifying through multiple regions could receive only one national championship place.[1]

The advertised initial format was race-to-two, with a firing-rate limit of 10.5 balls per second and rules based on the World Paintball Organisation framework. The league acknowledged that variations could occur between host locations.[1]

Formats and divisions varied between regional programmes. For example, RAW advertised a combined Division 1 and Division 2 Open competition associated with NXL Australia, while WASP's 2017 calendar separately listed five-player rounds and two-player NXL events.[10][11]
