Ballistics Unit (New Zealand Paintball Team)
Ballistics Unit is a New Zealand competitive paintball team based in Auckland. Its documented record includes consecutive New Zealand Lightning Series championships in 2018 and 2019, Division One victory at the 2019 NXL Australia Finals and continued New Zealand competition through 2026.[1][2][3]
The team's PBLeagues profile identifies Auckland as its home town and Asylum Paintball as its associated field.[1]
History
[edit]Disposal Unit predecessor
[edit]Disposal Unit was a predecessor of Ballistics Unit, according to a contributor familiar with the teams. PBLeagues separately documents Disposal Unit as an Auckland team competing from 2014 to 2016 and Ballistics Unit as an Auckland team registered in its database on 2 July 2017.[1][4] The database records establish the chronology but do not themselves state the organisational relationship.
Disposal Unit's documented results included second place in three rounds of the 2014 SAPC Open X-Ball series, third place in another round and victory in Division Two at the 2016 Auckland Paintball Cup.[4] These results remain attributed to Disposal Unit rather than being rewritten as Ballistics Unit results.
Names and early competition
[edit]The team's official Facebook page was created on 5 June 2017 under the name New Zealand Paintball Team. Facebook's page history records the following subsequent names:[5]
| Date | Page name |
|---|---|
| 10 June 2017 | New Zealand Paintball Team World Cup Asia/ Nations Cup 2017 |
| 20 July 2017 | New Zealand Paintball Team 2017 |
| 16 September 2017 | Ballistics Unit NZL |
| 4 October 2017 | Ballistics Unit Aisawan |
| 21 October 2018 | Ballistics Unit |
These dates document the Facebook page's naming history rather than establishing the team's founding date or proving that each page name was used as a tournament entry.[5]
Ballistics Unit identified itself as the 2018 New Zealand Lightning Series champion in a post published on 28 January 2019.[6]
During the opening round of the 2019 series, Kaos Theory placed first while two Ballistics Unit squads placed second and third. The team's post is dated 10 March, while its image metadata displays 9 March; an exact local event date is therefore not assigned.[7]
At the second round, Ballistics Unit 1 placed first and Ballistics Unit 2 placed third.[8] A December retrospective published by the team described Ballistics Unit as winning consecutive NZLS championships in 2018 and 2019, with three first-place and two second-place round results during the 2019 season.[2]
NXL Australia
[edit]PBLeagues records Ballistics Unit finishing second among five Division One teams at NXL Australia NSW Round 2 on 5 May 2019. The team scored 77.5 ranking points.[1][9]
Ballistics Unit subsequently won Division One at the NXL Australia Finals on 12–13 October, finishing first among seven teams with 100 ranking points.[1][3]
2020 New Zealand Race Series
[edit]In a report published on 28 March 2020, Ballistics Unit stated that it had finished second behind Expendables at the first New Zealand Race Series event, held the preceding weekend.[10]
A separate report dated 27 June described another runner-up finish against Expendables. Ballistics Unit reported winning the round robin and taking a 2–0 lead in the final before Expendables scored three unanswered points.[11]
Arena competition, 2023–2026
[edit]Ballistics Unit reached the final of the October round of the 2023 Arena 5 Man Race Series. A contemporary interview with Ralph Tsing reported a 3–0 final defeat to Expendables.[12]
The team was named in the published draws for the Easter, King's Birthday and Labour weekend rounds of the 2024 Arena Paintball Race Events.[13][14][15] It was also listed in the March and May–June draws for the 2025 Arena Paintball Race Events.[16][17] These draw records establish registration or scheduled participation; they are not treated as final results.
Ballistics Unit again fielded two squads in 2026. Ballistics Unit 1 and Ballistics Unit 2 appeared in separate pools at the 2026 Arena Paintball Easter Race. After the event, the organiser's series table listed Ballistics Unit 1 with 121 points and Ballistics Unit 2 with 112.[18]
Both squads also appeared in the published pools and interim score records for the 2026 Arena Paintball Matariki Race. The available source does not establish their final placings.[19]
Squad identity
[edit]Ballistics Unit 1 and Ballistics Unit 2 were numbered entries of Ballistics Unit rather than unrelated teams. The team's own 2019 reports use both squad names, and the same structure appears in the organiser's 2026 draws.[7][8][18][19]
The shortened name Ballistics appears in overseas records for unrelated teams and is not treated as a Ballistics Unit alias without New Zealand context.
Sponsors
[edit]In June 2020, Ballistics Unit identified Gladiatair Paintball Tanks, Paintball Factory and Asylum Paintball as sponsors.[11]
