Super 5s was a New Zealand tournament paintball series held during the 2000s. The competition featured regular five-player tournaments, with teams accumulating points towards divisional season championships. Surviving records document events between at least 2004 and 2007, principally in the Auckland region.[1][2][3]

The series included established New Zealand teams such as Menace, Legion, XXX, Solid and Sinista. The 2006 championship was won by Menace in Division 1 and Legion in Division 2.[3] The following season featured separate divisional standings, with Legion leading Division 1 and Sinista leading Division 2 after the sixth round.[4]

The series' inaugural and final seasons have not been established.

History

2004 season

The earliest currently identified Super 5s records date from 2004.

Archived discussions from the NZ Paintball Message Boards identify events in February, March, April, May and June 2004, together with an announcement concerning a change to the April tournament date.[1]

Additional discussions from later in 2004 refer to further Super 5s competitions, including July and August events.[5]

These records establish that the competition operated as a recurring tournament series during 2004. Complete results and final championship standings have not yet been recovered.

2005 season

The Super 5s continued during 2005.

Archived tournament discussions document competitions in February, March, April, May, June, August and September, together with a November event and season prizegiving.[2][6]

The surviving forum indexes establish the continued operation of the series, although complete event results and final championship standings have not yet been recovered.

2006 season

The 2006 competition operated with two divisions and accumulated points across the season.

Individual tournament results discussions survive for multiple rounds, including events between March and October. The final round took place on 3 December 2006, following a scheduling change associated with the Big Boys Toys paintball tournament.[3][7]

Menace won the Division 1 championship with 8,688 points, ahead of XXX on 7,533.

Legion won Division 2 with 5,512 points, followed by Solid on 5,279 and Sinista on 5,077.[3]

The December round itself was won by XXX, ahead of Menace and Legion.

See 2006 Super 5s (New Zealand) for the championship standings and recovered tournament results.

2007 season

The 2007 season began on 25 February, when Legion won the opening round and Punx finished first in Division 2.[8]

Menace won the second and third rounds, held on 25 March and 22 April respectively. Both events took place at A Paintball Adventure, an indoor paintball venue at 80B Hunua Road, Papakura, Auckland.[9][10][11]

The May event was postponed because of Mother's Day. Competition resumed on 24 June, with Legion winning ahead of Team AJ and Sinista.[12][13]

Legion also won the July and August rounds, extending its lead in the Division 1 standings.[4][14]

After Round 6, Legion led Division 1 with 4,895 points, while Sinista led Division 2 with 3,168 points.[4]

A seventh round was announced for 23 September 2007 at Paintball Adventure. The available announcement does not establish whether the event took place or its results.[15]

Final championship standings for 2007 have not yet been recovered.

See 2007 Super 5s (New Zealand) for round-by-round results and published championship standings.

Competition format

The Super 5s used a five-player tournament format, with teams separated into divisions and receiving points towards season standings.

Contemporary discussions describe the competition as using a hopper-ball format, limiting players to the paintballs carried in their marker loaders. In March 2007, participants discussed allowing an additional pod of paintballs, but the available records do not establish that this change was adopted.[16]

The competition was structured to accommodate teams of different competitive levels. Division 1 included established tournament teams, while Division 2 included developing and other participating squads.

The divisional composition changed between seasons. Legion, for example, won Division 2 in 2006 and competed in Division 1 during 2007.[3][8]

Venues

The series was associated with the Auckland tournament paintball community.

The March and April 2007 rounds are documented at A Paintball Adventure, 80B Hunua Road, Papakura, Auckland.[9][11]

The same venue was referred to as Paintball Adventure in later tournament announcements.[15]

The locations of every historical Super 5s round have not been independently established.

Historical records

Most surviving documentation of the Super 5s is preserved through archived discussions from the NZ Paintball Message Boards, associated with Paintball.co.nz.

These records include contemporary tournament announcements, individual round results and cumulative divisional standings.

Some published standings contain inconsistencies between individual round scores and reported championship totals. The season articles preserve the figures as originally published and identify known discrepancies rather than reconstructing unsupported official standings.

The currently recovered records do not establish the series' complete organisational history, full list of venues or final season of operation.
