MXball, also styled Mxball and MXBALL Paintball League, was a Mexican paintball league associated with three-player X-Ball competition in 2006–2007, later five-player events and a proposed international tournament in Cancún in January 2009.[1] Contemporary records link it to mxball3.com and the LiveTheSport paintball forum.[1][5] Its relationship to the later Mexican Paintball League (MPL) and Mexican Xball League (MXL) has not been established as a formal succession or series of name changes.

History

[edit]

Origins

[edit]

The 2009 UNAM study by Saraí Fuentes García describes PGP Masters Cup and Road To World Cup as earlier Mexican tournament series whose organisers combined their competitions in early 2005 to form Serial Mexicano de Paintball (SMP). It discusses SMP and MXball separately; this is not documentation of a formal SMP-to-MXball name change.[2]

Sources give different starting points for MXball. Fuentes García dated its emergence to 2005.[2] In a November 2008 PBNation post, the MXball promotion-staff account Takas@mxball3 stated that the league began three-player X-Ball competition in 2006 and continued that format through 2007.[1] The available evidence does not establish whether these dates refer to formation and first competition respectively.

Competition in 2007

[edit]

A LiveTheSport standings correction posted by aiba on 8 June 2007 described group qualification, identifying DF Traffic, Seccion 8 and Xtreme Planet as already qualified for the finals. These were positions during the competition, rather than final championship placings.[3]

A separate notice announced finals for 16–17 June at Xtreme Paintball, at kilometre 11.5 on the Ajusco road.[4]

On 4 July, the administrator account Administrador opened registration for a proposed second 2007 season, requiring at least ten paid teams by 7 July. On 9 July, the administrator account KF announced that the season was suspended because insufficient teams had entered.[5] This announcement concerned that proposed season and did not establish permanent closure of the league.

Five-player plans in 2008

[edit]

A January 2008 PBNation announcement promoted a new MXball programme offering five-player competition, Xball Lite and Xball Arena.[6]

In November, Takas@mxball3 stated that MXball had held one five-player X-Ball event earlier in 2008, while the remaining proposed national events had been abandoned because of insufficient interest and attendance.[1][7] The statement documents the organiser's account of the reduced programme; the announced calendar should not be treated as a list of completed tournaments.

Proposed Cancún Open

[edit]

On 25 November 2008, KF, posting as MXball staff on LiveTheSport, presented the International Cancun Open Paintball Tournament 2009 as a revived MXball project.[8]

A 6 January update reduced the proposed event to a single five-player Open X-Ball division on 24–25 January 2009, with registration through the APPA.[8]

On 14 January, Takas@mxball3 announced on PBNation that the event had been postponed because of the financial situation.[9] The following day, KF attributed its cancellation to insufficient paid entries and the cost of continuing preparations, while leaving open the possibility of another attempt.[10] The event is therefore not recorded here as a completed tournament.

Annual round-ups

[edit]
Season Coverage and evidence limits
2006 MXball Opening round and partial event chronology; later accounts differ over the programme. No complete final season standings verified.[1][2]
2007 MXball Recovered qualification records, announced June finals and suspension of a proposed second season. Qualification positions are not final championship standings.[3][4][5]
2008 MXball One five-player event reported by promotion staff; remaining proposed events abandoned. No final season standings verified.[1][7]

The proposed 2009 MXball Cancún Open is covered separately as a postponed event, rather than a completed season.[9][10]

Connections with MPL and MXL

[edit]

Mexican Paintball League

[edit]

The January 2009 LiveTheSport cancellation discussion included a participant referring to another competition as “MLP”, expanded as Liga Mexicana de Paintball. This was a participant's wording, not an organiser's announcement of a merger or renaming.[10]

A more direct website connection survives in the PBLeagues information page for the 2010 MPL Guadalajara Open, which links to mxball3.com.[11] That link establishes an association between the archived event information and the MXball website, but does not establish an organisational transfer.

No recovered formal announcement establishes that MXball was renamed MPL, merged into it or permanently dissolved when MPL began its documented national programme.

Mexican Xball League

[edit]

Takas@mxball3 used the description Mexican X-ball league (Mxball) in November 2008.[1] Similarity to the later Mexican Xball League name is not sufficient evidence that the two names identify the same organisation.

The present-day PBLeagues archive groups MPL-labelled events and later MXL events within league record 120.[12] This documents the connection between those tournament records, but does not independently establish MXball's place in that history or prove a continuous MXball–MPL–MXL organisational succession.
