Paintball Sportz
Paintball Sportz, also trading as Paintball Sportz NZ, was a New Zealand paintball equipment supplier, field operator and tournament organiser. Its mid-2000s website identified Brendon Charles and Peter Mumby as the people behind the business and advertised JT, Viewloader, WDP and Zap products.[1][2]
History
[edit]Paintball Sportz was associated with New Zealand tournament paintball by 2004. A contemporary report on Team Kiwi's visit to Malaysia that year identified Brendon Charles as a half-owner of the business and described Peter Mumby as its public representative. The report also credited Paintball Sportz NZ among the supporters of the team's playing uniforms.[3]
The business's website, archived in December 2005, named Charles and Mumby together and described their involvement in organising Volcanic tournaments in Rotorua and Hamilton.[1]
By May 2010, the website's About Us page named Peter Mumby alone. The homepage at that time promoted Paintball Action Rotorua and provided a booking contact.[6][7]
Playing fields
[edit]In December 2005, the website described Paintball Sportz as operating bush and speedball fields in Rotorua and Tauranga, formerly known as Paintball Rotorua and Paintball BOP. It also stated that the business hosted the Rotorua Paintball Club, which organised club days and trips to events around New Zealand.[8]
Rotorua
[edit]The Rotorua field was advertised at 62 Te Manu Road, Paradise Valley. Its features included natural obstacles formed by tree ferns, stumps and fallen logs, together with timber, inflatable and sandbag bunkers. The site also advertised an elevated viewing and barbecue area and lighting for night games.[9]
Tauranga
[edit]The Tauranga operation was located at the Valley Outdoor Centre, Merrick Road, Pyes Pa. Its advertised playing areas included a symmetrical tyre field and an inflatable speedball field.[10]
The linked field website advertised regular club tournament days on the first Sunday of each month in Tauranga and the third Sunday in Rotorua. It also offered portable inflatable fields.[11]
Tournament organisation
[edit]The linked Paintball BOP website credited Paintball BOP and the Rotorua Paintball Club with organising the 2001 and 2002 Volcanic tournaments at Rotorua International Stadium.[12]
The same page identified Paintball BOP as the organiser of the 2003 V Comp Volcanic at Rotorua International Stadium and the 2004 NZ V Comp at Waikato Stadium in Hamilton.[12]
Equipment supply and servicing
[edit]In January 2005, Paintball Sportz advertised itself as an official supplier of JT, Viewloader, WDP and Zap. Its advertised products included JT goggles, WDP Angel markers and WGP Autococker markers.[2]
The website offered markers, goggles, loaders, clothing, harnesses, accessories, air systems, barrels and paintballs. Orders could be placed by telephone or email through either Mumby or Charles.[4]
A separate page identified Paintball Sportz as an official distributor for Archon Paintball, offering stocked products and special orders. The business also offered to arrange the purchase and shipment of Sup'Air inflatable fields manufactured by Adrenaline Games in France.[13][14]
Its Zap page described Paintball Sportz as the brand's official New Zealand agent and stated that it imported paintballs in temperature-controlled containers. Advertised stock included Tork, Primer and Spank, with Chronic and Crank imported on request and for particular tournaments.[15]
Paintball Sportz offered servicing support for the markers it sold. Its servicing page also recommended Lynx Custom for Angel, Autococker and Automag work, and Neil Bell for Angel and Intimidator servicing.[16]
Website and forum
[edit]Paintball Sportz operated the website paintballsportz.co.nz and an associated discussion forum for local players.[2][5]
On 14 November 2006, forum administrator Brendon C announced that the forum had closed because of limited participation and inappropriate posts. He invited anyone interested in reopening and moderating it to contact him or Pete.[5]
