Matty Marshall

From WikiPaintball

Matty Marshall, also known as Matt Marshall, is an American former professional paintball player, commentator, writer and media producer. He is best known for his playing career with the Southern California Ironmen and XSV, and for his subsequent work as a commentator for professional paintball broadcasts.[1][2]

Marshall has been involved in paintball broadcasting since the 2000s, including televised tournament coverage and the National Xball League (NXL). He is the lead commentator for GoSports, the official broadcast partner of Major League Paintball, and is commonly known as the "Voice of Paintball".[3]

He was included in the inaugural Iconic Paintball Hall of Icons class in 2023.[4]

Playing career

[edit]

Early career

[edit]

Marshall began competing professionally in Southern California during the late 1990s.

His early teams included Marine Team and Navarone, before he joined the Southern California Ironmen.[1]

Marshall subsequently became associated with the development of professional tournament paintball during the transition from traditional ten-player competition to seven-player airball and X-Ball formats.

Southern California Ironmen

[edit]

By 2001, Marshall was a member of the Southern California Ironmen, competing alongside Shane Pestana, Oliver Lang, Micah McGlocklin, Yosh Rau, Rich Telford and Billy Wing.

Contemporary National Professional Paintball League (NPPL) professional rosters list him under the name Matt Marshall in both 2001 and 2002.[5][6]

At the 2002 NPPL Chicago Open, held at Badlandz Paintball Field in Crete, Illinois, Marshall helped the Ironmen win the professional ten-player division.

During a decisive final-round match against San Diego Dynasty, Marshall and Telford survived as the Ironmen's final two players, eliminating Dynasty's remaining competitors and securing a victory.

The Ironmen finished first in the professional division, ahead of Bob Long's Ironmen, Strange and Dynasty.[7]

Marshall also participated in the inaugural professional X-Ball competitions during 2003.

At the 2003 PSP Los Angeles Open, contemporary reporting documented him scoring the Ironmen's final point in a match against Chicago Aftershock.[8]

XSV

[edit]

In 2004, Marshall joined XSV, a professional team established by players departing the Ironmen, Chicago Aftershock and other established organisations.

The original XSV line-up included Marshall, Rich Telford, Micah McGlocklin and Nicky Cuba.

WARPIG's contemporary coverage of the 2004 NPPL Huntington Beach tournament identified Marshall among the players who had joined the newly formed team.[9]

Marshall competed with XSV during the organisation's rise to prominence in professional seven-player competition.

He was also involved in the team's early association with Planet Eclipse.

In a 2017 retrospective on the launch of the Planet Eclipse Ego, the manufacturer identified Marshall and Telford as prominent professional players whose use of the marker helped establish its credibility in American tournament paintball.[10]

XSV subsequently became the subject of the 2007 documentary Heroes for a Day: The XSV Story, which documented the team's efforts to compete against the dominant Dynasty organisation.[11]

Paintball media career

[edit]

Early television commentary

[edit]

Marshall became involved in professional paintball broadcasting while still active as a player.

By 2006, he was established as a commentator for televised tournament paintball.

At the 2006 Smart Parts Paintball World Championships, held at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Connecticut, Marshall provided play-by-play commentary alongside Bill Gardner.

Contemporary WARPIG reporting described him as a regular presence in televised tournament coverage.

The championship was subsequently broadcast on ESPN2 beginning in October 2006.[12]

Films and video productions

[edit]

Marshall has been associated with several prominent paintball films and video productions.

These include Push, Sunday Drivers and Heroes for a Day: The XSV Story.

His contributions included appearances, narration and other media work.

A contemporary WARPIG review of Obscure Influence, released by DerDer, identified Marshall as providing narrated introductions to tournament footage.[13]

Marshall also provided the introduction to Sunday Drivers, a documentary covering professional and divisional tournament paintball during the early 2000s.[14]

Splat Magazine and PROfiles

[edit]

Marshall was involved in paintball journalism and player interviews.

In 2008, he presented a series of interviews titled PROfiles, associated with Splat Magazine.

The series featured professional players and industry figures, including Oliver Lang, Alex Fraige and Junior Brown.

The interviews were subsequently republished by Social Paintball in November 2011.[15]

GoSports and Major League Paintball

[edit]

Marshall became a principal commentator for GoSports, the subscription streaming platform providing live coverage of professional paintball.

GoSports is the official broadcast partner of Major League Paintball, including its NXL professional events.

According to Major League Paintball, Marshall has been a leading voice in professional paintball broadcasting since the early 2000s and serves as GoSports' lead commentator.[3]

His broadcasts combine live play-by-play commentary with tactical analysis, interviews and historical context drawn from his professional playing career.

He has also presented extended interviews and discussion programmes through Major League Paintball PLUS, interviewing players, coaches and industry representatives.[16]

In January 2024, Marshall appeared alongside Ryan Greenspan and Marcello Margott in a Paintball Nerd discussion about the future of paintball media and broadcasting.[17]

Recognition

[edit]

Marshall has received recognition for both his competitive career and contributions to paintball media.

In 2021, Iconic Paintball included him in its retrospective assessment of notable professional players, highlighting his work with the Ironmen and XSV and his subsequent media career.[1]

He was included in the inaugural Iconic Paintball Hall of Icons class, officially designated the Class of 2023.

His individual induction profile is labelled as a 2022 inductee, although the organisation's official class archive identifies 2023 as the inaugural year.[4]

The induction recognised his professional playing achievements and his contributions to tournament broadcasting, journalism and paintball media.[4]
