Iconic Paintball Hall of Icons

From WikiPaintball

The Iconic Paintball Hall of Icons, commonly known as the Hall of Icons, is an American recognition programme established in 2023 to honour individuals who have made significant contributions to professional paintball. It was created by Ryan Greenspan of San Diego Dynasty and Quinn Nadu of Iconic Paintball.[1][2]

The programme recognises professional players and influential figures from different periods of tournament paintball history. Inductees are selected through a nomination and judging process, with annual induction classes published by Iconic Paintball.

The inaugural class was announced in 2023, with subsequent classes recognised through ceremonies associated with the National Xball League (NXL) Summit Awards.[1][3]

History

[edit]

Establishment

[edit]

According to Iconic Paintball, the idea for the Hall of Icons originated in a conversation between Ryan Greenspan and professional player Tim Montressor.

Greenspan subsequently developed the project with Quinn Nadu, a paintball journalist and founder of Iconic Paintball, to recognise players whose achievements and influence had contributed to professional paintball's development.[1]

The Hall of Icons was publicly unveiled at the 2023 NXL Sunshine State Major in Kissimmee, Florida.

Contemporary reporting identified an initial group of 20 entrants, including Shane Pestana, Tom Cole, Billy Ceranski, Todd Martinez and Matty Marshall.[2]

The programme's official website identifies its inaugural induction class as the Class of 2023. Some individual profiles in the original archive are labelled as 2022 inductions, creating an inconsistency between the individual profiles and the published class chronology.[3]

Summit Awards

[edit]

The Hall of Icons subsequently became associated with the NXL Summit Awards, a ceremony recognising achievements in professional paintball.

The 2024 induction class was presented at the Summit Awards held at the Sahara Casino Resort in Las Vegas in March 2024.

The ceremony included the presentation of Hall of Icons jackets to inductees alongside the league's annual player, team, industry and media awards.[4]

The Hall of Icons continued publishing annual induction classes in 2025 and 2026.[1]

Selection process

[edit]

The Hall of Icons uses a nomination and voting process overseen by a committee and judging panel.

The programme's published criteria consider an individual's professional playing achievements, contributions to their teams and wider influence on paintball.

The judging panel for the 2025 class included established professional players and industry figures, including Tom Cole, Matty Marshall, Alex Fraige, Todd Adamson, Adam Gardner, Billy Wing, Rich Telford and Todd Martinez.[5]

Era-based voting

[edit]

For the 2026 induction class, the Hall of Icons introduced a revised voting system separating nominees into three historical periods:

  • Growth Era (1983–2002): Recognising individuals associated with the development of competitive paintball during its formative decades.
  • Golden Era (2003–2011): Recognising professional players from the period associated with the expansion of X-Ball, the NPPL and PSP.
  • Modern Era (2012 onwards): Recognising players from the modern professional tournament period.

The change replaced the previous system in which nominees were considered within a single voting pool.

Under the revised criteria, Modern Era nominees generally become eligible following three consecutive years of retirement from professional competition, although exceptions can be approved by the Hall of Icons board.[6]
