Early involvement in paintball
[edit]Sunway Extreme Park
[edit]Phang began participating in paintball while attending college in Malaysia.
In a 2021 interview with eGG Network, republished by Astro Awani, he recalled discovering a paintball field at Sunway Extreme Park near his home.[1]
After playing several games, he became acquainted with regular players.
Having learned website development during college, Phang offered to build a website for a paintball team and was subsequently invited to join the team.
He also established an online forum for the Malaysian paintball community.
The forum helped connect players during a period when Malaysian paintball was developing its organised competitive scene.
Early business activities
[edit]Phang's personal website dates the beginning of his paintball industry career to 2003.[2]
He describes co-founding a business involved in distributing paintball equipment throughout Asia and organising international tournaments.
In the 2021 interview, Phang recalled that his involvement expanded from playing and online community development into equipment importing and tournament organisation.
His paintball business activities continued for much of the following decade.
Competitive paintball
[edit]Xtioneers
[edit]Phang played competitive paintball with the Malaysian team Xtioneers.
In a later public account, he recalled playing alongside Xing Kai Ong, also known as XK Ong, who competed in the snake position.
Phang described his own playing position as a back player.
He stated that the team represented Malaysia at international tournaments.[3]
His account refers to a 2010 Paintball World Cup Asia match between Xtioneers Malaysia and STK Australia.
The team's complete competitive record and Phang's individual tournament results require further documentation.
Malaysian Paintball Official Circuit
[edit]Phang was involved in the promotion and administration of the Malaysian Paintball Official Circuit.
Contemporary Lowyat.NET forum discussions show him promoting the 2007 MPOC season and communicating with participants.[4]
A January 2010 tournament announcement identified Phang as responsible for team liaison and registration.
The same announcement listed Paul Lam as tournament director and Junaidi Khalil as head of rules and regulations.
The organising team also included Amber Wong in media and promotions.
These records establish Phang's involvement in Malaysian tournament organisation before the expansion of PALS World Cup Asia.
Paintball Asia League Series
[edit]International liaison
[edit]Phang served as International Liaison Director of the Paintball Asia League Series.
The 2010 Paintball World Cup Asia handbook identified him as the tournament's International Liaison.[5]
The handbook listed other members of the tournament organisation, including:
| Person | Published responsibility |
|---|---|
| Allan Phang | International Liaison |
| Paul Lam | Tournament Director |
| Amber Wong | Head of Media and Promotions |
| Maz | Malaysian Liaison |
By 2011, Phang was publicly using the title International Liaison Director.
His responsibilities included communication with international teams, tournament promotion, registration enquiries and coordination with overseas participants.
Paintball World Cup Asia 2011
[edit]Phang was involved in the international promotion of the 2011 Paintball World Cup Asia on Langkawi, Malaysia.
Contemporary promotional material identified him as PALS International Liaison Director and Paul Lam as chief executive officer of PALS Event Sdn Bhd.[6]
Phang distributed tournament information to international paintball communities, including:
- Competition dates and venues
- Divisional registration information
- International team participation
- Tournament formats
- Commercial exhibition opportunities
- Accommodation and travel information
- Sponsorship announcements
The promotional campaign included communications with players and teams from Europe, Asia, Oceania, Africa and the Americas.
A September 2011 promotional update published by Phang listed 144 team registrations at that point in the registration process, comprising 77 international and 67 Malaysian teams.[6]
These figures represent a dated registration update, not independently verified final attendance.
International media relations
[edit]Phang communicated with international paintball media during preparations for World Cup Asia.
A November 2011 post on the paintball blog View from the Deadbox reproduced correspondence from Phang requesting coverage of the event's field layout.[7]
The correspondence illustrates his role in promoting the tournament to specialist paintball publications and websites.
World Cup Asia 2012
[edit]Phang continued as PALS International Liaison Director during the 2012 World Cup Asia preparations.
Contemporary tournament information again listed him in that position, alongside Paul Lam as CEO and Catherine Chew as chief financial officer and team-registration contact.[8]
World Cup Asia 2012 was held in Langkawi.
Phang's role formed part of the wider PALS organisation's international team and media coordination.
Paintball community development
[edit]Online forums
[edit]Phang was an early participant in Malaysian online paintball communities.
His Lowyat.NET account was used to promote tournament events, answer player questions and distribute information about competitions.
A 2007 discussion concerning MPOC demonstrates his involvement in communicating tournament information to Malaysian players.[4]
His later interview with eGG Network described establishing an early paintball forum as part of his involvement in the sport.[1]
The exact identity and operating dates of that original forum have not been conclusively established.
Equipment distribution
[edit]Phang's personal website describes his involvement in a business distributing paintball equipment across Asia.[2]
In his 2021 interview, he also discussed importing paintball equipment and organising international tournaments.
The available sources establish his involvement in the commercial paintball industry but do not fully document the business's corporate history or product distribution agreements.
Career after paintball
[edit]AirAsia
[edit]After leaving the paintball industry, Phang joined AirAsia.
In his 2021 interview, he recalled contacting AirAsia co-founder Tony Fernandes about employment opportunities.[1]
He subsequently became involved in the airline's esports activities.
Phang served as Head of Esports at AirAsia and helped develop the AirAsia Allstars Esports Club.
A 2019 interview published by GamingPH documented his responsibility for esports initiatives and internal engagement at the airline.[9]
EVOS Esports
[edit]Phang later joined EVOS Esports as Regional Head of Marketing and Public Relations.
INTI International University & Colleges identified him in that position in an article discussing the development of esports during the COVID-19 pandemic.[10]
His responsibilities involved regional marketing and communications for the esports organisation.
Galaxy Racer
[edit]In 2021, Phang was identified as Chief Marketing Officer of Galaxy Racer, an international esports organisation.
The eGG Network interview covered his appointment and his transition from paintball into esports marketing.[1]
His personal website also lists Galaxy Racer among his previous professional roles.[2]
These later positions illustrate how skills developed through paintball community building, event promotion and international sponsorship work were applied in the esports industry.
Historical significance
[edit]Allan Phang was involved in several aspects of Malaysian and Asian competitive paintball during the 2000s and early 2010s.
His documented activities included:
- Participation in the early Malaysian paintball community
- Development of online communications for paintball players
- Competitive participation with Xtioneers
- Paintball equipment distribution
- Promotion of the Malaysian Paintball Official Circuit
- International liaison for the Paintball Asia League Series
