2009 USPL West Coast Open
The 2009 USPL West Coast Open was a US Paintball League (USPL) tournament held from 24 to 26 July 2009 at SC Village in Corona, California. It was the second event of the league's 2009 season and included seven-player, five-player and pump competition. DC Arsenal won the professional division, defeating St. Louis Avalanche in the final.[1][2]
Background and NPPL relationship
[edit]The tournament was promoted under the USPL name. In an announcement dated 29 April 2009, the league stated that it had purchased the trademarks and rights to the National Professional Paintball League (NPPL) Super 7 World Series. It would retain NPPL sanctioning rules and committees, while its member teams considered using the NPPL name the following year.[3]
The same announcement reduced the 2009 calendar to four events and postponed the D.C. Challenge until August. The West Coast Open therefore followed the April Huntington Beach tournament as the second event. Participation in the West Coast Open was required for teams seeking a Western Conference championship.[3]
Competition
[edit]The event attracted 44 seven-player teams and 25 five-player teams, compared with 71 and 34 respectively at Huntington Beach.[1]
DC Arsenal won all seven professional preliminary games. The team subsequently defeated Oakland Blast in the semi-finals before beating St. Louis Avalanche for the championship. Avalanche reached the final by winning two of three semi-final games against X-Factor. X-Factor defeated Oakland Blast for third place.[1]
