2005 PSP season
The 2005 PSP season was a five-event United States paintball championship series organised by Paintball Sports Promotions (PSP). It featured open and divisional X-Ball, conventional five-player competition and a new Young Guns category. PSP discontinued ten-player competition for the season.[1][2]
San Diego Dynasty won the Open X-Ball season championship, while Baltimore Trauma won the separate National Xball League (NXL) championship at World Cup. San Diego Aftermath won the Division 3 X-Ball season title.[5][6]
Formats and rules
[edit]PSP's removal of ten-player competition shortened its tournament schedules. X-Ball generally ran from Thursday to Sunday, while five-player competition occupied the latter part of each event.[1][2]
PSP also replaced its semi-automatic-only equipment restriction with rules permitting enhanced firing modes under a 15-balls-per-second limit. Markers had to operate semi-automatically for the first three shots after being at rest for at least one second; subsequent trigger cycles could produce up to three shots, subject to the firing-rate limit.[1]
Open, Division 1, Division 2 and Division 3 classifications replaced the older Professional, Amateur, Novice and Rookie terminology used in conventional competition.[1]
Young Guns
[edit]The Orlando Open introduced PSP's five-player Young Guns competition for players aged fifteen and younger. It continued at Chicago, Northeast and World Cup.[2][6]

The Northeast Open moved from Nemacolin Woodlands Resort because a conflicting golf tournament restricted nearby accommodation. The replacement Turner Valley venue provided access to the Pittsburgh area.[4]
PBLeagues lists World Cup's scheduled PSP dates as 25–30 October. NXL qualifying began on 23 October, while Hurricane Wilma delayed the start of PSP tournament play until 26 October.[5][7]

Diesel secured the Division 1 five-player title before World Cup through two victories and two second-place finishes. Its championship was explicitly identified in WARPIG's contemporary World Cup preview.[9]
The original APPA table differs from the present-day PBLeagues archive, particularly in five-player competition. The contemporary table places Diesel first in Division 1 and Team Splatball first in Division 2; those records are used here.[6][10]
The Division 3 five-player season table also included a Bunkerfest points column, with Team Zone receiving 100 points there, alongside the five main PSP tournaments.[6]
National Xball League
[edit]The NXL remained a separate professional competition staged alongside PSP tournaments. Regular-season matches determined standings and World Cup play-off seeding, rather than separate NXL event champions.[3][4][9]
Boston Red Legion joined the NXL for 2005. Heavy rain at the opening SoCal event postponed matches, with additional games subsequently scheduled at later stops.[1][2][3]
Regular-season honours
[edit]Boston won the Eastern Conference and the Commissioner's Cup, awarded to the highest-ranked regular-season team. Oakland Assassins won the Western Conference.[4]
WARPIG's World Cup preview recorded Boston first overall with 26 points, followed by Chicago Aftershock and Oakland Assassins on 22 each, and Baltimore Trauma on 20.[9]
World Cup championship
[edit]The NXL used best-of-three qualifying and play-off series at World Cup. Baltimore Trauma defeated Boston Red Legion 8–6 and 8–7 in the championship final. Detroit Strange defeated Oakland Assassins 10–8 in the third-place match.[5]
| Position | Team |
|---|---|
| 1 | Baltimore Trauma |
| 2 | Boston Red Legion |
| 3 | Detroit Strange |
| 4 | Oakland Assassins |
The NXL championship was separate from Dynasty's PSP Open X-Ball season title.[5][6]
