Bryon Benini is an American former professional paintball player, filmmaker and equipment entrepreneur. He is best known for his playing career with the Southern California Ironmen and Chicago Aftershock, co-producing the documentary Push with Patrick Spohrer, and founding Push Paintball.[1][2][3]

Benini competed professionally during the 1990s and 2000s and subsequently worked in paintball equipment development, including patented designs associated with DYE Precision. He was inducted into the Iconic Paintball Hall of Icons in 2024.[4]

Playing career

[edit]

Early career

[edit]

Benini competed in California tournament paintball during the late 1980s.

In a 2023 interview, former professional player Jamie Canavero recalled competing alongside Benini and Shane Pestana with the California Black Diamonds in 1988.[5]

Benini subsequently joined the original Ironmen organisation and remained associated with the team during its professional championship era.

Southern California Ironmen

[edit]

Following the division of the original Ironmen organisation in the late 1990s, Benini continued competing with the Southern California Ironmen.

He was documented as a member of the team at the 2000 NPPL Chicago Open, where he was also promoting an early screening of his paintball documentary Push.[6]

The official 2001 National Professional Paintball League (NPPL) roster identified Benini alongside Shane Pestana, Marty Bush, Oliver Lang, Matty Marshall, Micah McGlocklin, Yosh Rau, Rich Telford and Billy Wing.[7]

Chicago Aftershock

[edit]

In early 2002, Benini transferred from the Southern California Ironmen to Chicago Aftershock.

Contemporary WARPIG coverage of the 2002 NPPL Los Angeles Open identified him as the only remaining member of the Ironmen's older playing group who had continued competing regularly, noting his move to Aftershock.[8]

Later that year, coverage of the 2002 Paintball World Cup confirmed his involvement with Aftershock and his continuing work in paintball filmmaking.[9]

Return to the Ironmen

[edit]

Benini later returned to the Ironmen organisation during the professional X-Ball era.

At the 2007 PSP Los Angeles Open, the Los Angeles Ironmen won the professional National Xball League division.

Contemporary WARPIG reporting identified Benini and Shane Pestana among the team's longstanding leaders, alongside newer players including Oliver Lang and Nicky Cuba.[10]

Official PBLeagues records also identify Benini on Los Angeles Ironmen professional rosters during the 2007 season.[11]

Paintball filmmaking

[edit]

Push

[edit]

Benini co-produced Push with filmmaker Patrick Spohrer.

The project developed from footage recorded during practices and the 1999 Paintball World Cup, supplemented by interviews and tournament coverage gathered during the following season.

The documentary followed professional teams including the Southern California Ironmen, Avalanche, Chicago Aftershock and Image.

Its production combined competition footage with interviews and scenes documenting the experiences of professional players away from tournaments.[6][12]

An unfinished version was screened at the 2000 NPPL Chicago Open in Lansing, Illinois.

WARPIG reported that the screening attracted large audiences and documented Benini's efforts to promote the film around the tournament venue.[6]

The completed documentary premiered during the 2000 Paintball World Cup in Kissimmee, Florida.

The screening took place at a local sports bar, with the film shown on indoor and outdoor screens.

WARPIG's contemporary report documented the premiere and the response from players and spectators.[12]

Although some later promotional material dates the film to 2001, contemporary tournament reporting establishes that its premiere occurred in October 2000.

Sunday Drivers

[edit]

Benini and Spohrer continued their collaboration through Division One Productions.

Their second documentary, Sunday Drivers, was presented during the 2002 Paintball World Cup.

The film placed greater emphasis on tournament action, responding to audience feedback received following Push.

Contemporary WARPIG coverage identified Benini and Spohrer as the production company's founders and documented the forthcoming screening.[9]

Their work became part of the development of dedicated paintball film production during the early 2000s.

Equipment development

[edit]

DYE Precision

[edit]

Benini worked in paintball equipment design and development through DYE Precision.

At an early-2000s paintball industry event, WARPIG identified him as a representative demonstrating the company's Invision goggle system.[13]

His involvement in equipment development is independently documented by United States patent records.

In December 2002, Benini filed an application for a paintball garment incorporating gripping surfaces intended to improve the stability of a player's marker and air system against the body.

The invention was subsequently assigned to DYE Precision, and United States Patent 7,191,470 was granted on 20 March 2007.[14]

Benini was also named as a co-inventor on United States Patent 8,047,190, covering a motorised paintball loader.

The other named inventors were Eero Kaakkola and Gerald R. Parks. The patent was granted on 1 November 2011.[15]

Additional patent records identify him as a co-inventor of pneumatic paintball marker technology alongside David DeHaan, Eric Roberts, William Wing and Eero Kaakkola.[16]

Push Paintball

[edit]

Benini subsequently established Push Paintball, a manufacturer of paintball protective equipment and accessories.

The business adopted the name of his earlier documentary project.

According to the company's official history, Push Paintball was established in 2017, with the intention of developing equipment informed by the experience of professional players.[3]

The Push Paintball trademark was filed in July 2015 and registered in November 2017, with Benini identified as its owner.

The registration covered protective eyewear and paintball equipment.[17]

One of the company's principal early products was the Push Unite goggle system, commercially available by 2017.

The Unite range incorporated adjustable fit features, thermal lenses and other design elements intended for competitive paintball.[18]

Push subsequently expanded its range to include additional goggle models, protective accessories, equipment bags and paintball markers.[19]

Benini also worked with other former professional players and industry figures in developing the business, including Mikko Huttunen, who joined Push in 2017 and contributed to its branding and marketing.[20]

Recognition

[edit]

Benini was inducted into the Iconic Paintball Hall of Icons in 2024.

The official induction biography recognised his professional career with the Ironmen and Aftershock, his work on Push and his subsequent establishment of Push Paintball.[4]

The organisation particularly highlighted the documentary's contribution to the presentation of professional tournament paintball during the early 2000s.
