MacDev Ronin was a Malaysian tournament paintball team based in Kuala Lumpur. The team competed in the Malaysian National Paintball League (MY-NPL), Malaysian Paintball Official Circuit (MPOC) and Paintball Asia League Series (PALS), with documented tournament appearances between 2007 and 2013.[1][2][3]

MacDev Ronin finished second in Division 1 at the 2008 Paintball World Cup Asia, won the second round of the 2010 MPOC championship and finished fourth at the 2010 World Cup Asia. The team also represented Malaysia at the 2009 Intercontinental Cup in Paris, France.[3][4][5][6]

History

[edit]

Early competition (2007–2008)

[edit]

MacDev Ronin was competing in Malaysia's Division 1 tournaments by November 2007.

At the final round of the 2007 MY-NPL season, held at the Malaysian Paintball Academy in Petaling Jaya, the team finished fourth behind Demonz, TAG Effect and Nemesis.[1]

During the 2008 season, MacDev Ronin finished third at the third round of MY-NPL, held at MAPAAC in Petaling Jaya on 31 May–1 June.

At the season-ending tournament in November, the team finished second behind Nemesis Legion. MacDev Ronin also received the league's Best Club award for 2008.[2][3]

2008 World Cup Asia

[edit]

MacDev Ronin achieved its most significant international result at World Cup Asia, held at Xtion Paintball Park in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur, from 13 to 16 November 2008.

The team advanced through the Division 1 competition, defeating opponents including Datis, Australia's Sydney SWAT, Raskal and Demonz Red.

MacDev Ronin reached the final against Thailand's Infernal.

Infernal won the championship, leaving MacDev Ronin in second place.

Malaysia's Xtioneers finished third, with Sydney SWAT fourth.[4]

Following the tournament, Australian equipment manufacturer MacDev publicly congratulated the team and reaffirmed its sponsorship commitment.[7]

International competition in Europe (2009)

[edit]

MacDev Ronin represented Malaysia at the 2009 Intercontinental Cup, held alongside the Millennium Series Paris tournament in July.

The team competed against international opponents including Budapest Bullets, Riga Chilli Peppers and Assala Libreville.

MacDev Ronin finished third in its preliminary group, recording one victory against Assala Libreville.

The team subsequently lost 4–0 to Marseille Icon in the quarter-finals.[5][6]

MacDev Ronin also entered the Millennium Series Division 2 tournament at the same event, facing Ronins PBW Haguenau, 2easy Warsaw and London Nexus.[8]

In domestic competition, the team finished second at the fourth round of the 2009 MPOC championship, held at Xtion Paintball Park in Kuala Lumpur on 13–14 June.[9]

2010 MPOC season

[edit]

MacDev Ronin won the second round of the 2010 Malaysian Paintball Official Circuit in April.

The team defeated a field that included Demonz Red, X-Fox and Perth City Trauma to secure first place in Division 1.[10]

At the final round of the season, held at MPSJ Stadium in Subang Jaya on 2–3 October, MacDev Ronin finished second after losing the championship match 3–2 to Demonz Red.

The team's own account reported that it reached four finals during the five-round season, winning one tournament and finishing second at three others.

Although MacDev Ronin described itself as the league's highest-ranked team, contemporary MPOC results identify Demonz Red as the overall 2010 Division 1 series champion.[11][12]

MacDev Ronin also won the 2010 Sabah Youth Cup, according to the team's published season review.[13]

2010 World Cup Asia

[edit]

MacDev Ronin returned to World Cup Asia in November 2010.

The tournament was held at Padang Merbok in Kuala Lumpur from 26 to 28 November.

MacDev Ronin finished fourth in Division 1, behind Iran's Datis, France's Bad Elements and Australia's STK.

The team also received a Best From Nation award as the highest-placed Malaysian competitor in the division.[13]

Later competition (2011–2013)

[edit]

MacDev Ronin continued competing in the MPOC during 2011.

The team finished third at the second round in Malacca in March, with several players from Australia's STK joining the squad for the event.[14]

At the fourth round, held at Xtion Paintball Park in Bukit Jalil on 11–12 June, MacDev Ronin finished second after losing the final 3–2 to Nemesis Legion.

Australian player Daniel Woods was among the guest players representing MacDev Ronin during the tournament.[15]

The team's official PBLeagues record documents further competition in 2013.

MacDev Ronin finished fifth among six teams at the opening round of the MPOC season in January.

The team subsequently finished eighth among ten Division 1 competitors at the Malaysian Open in May 2013.[16]

The team's original founding date and subsequent organisational status have not been conclusively established.

Sponsorship and equipment

[edit]

MacDev Ronin was sponsored by Australian paintball equipment manufacturer MacDev, which supplied electronic tournament markers and technical support.

The team used MacDev Cyborg markers during its early international competition, including the Cyborg RX at the 2008 World Cup Asia.[4][7]
