The 2019 ICPL Windy City Classic was the inaugural tournament of the International Classic Paintball League (ICPL), held on 1–2 June 2019 at Badlandz in Crete, Illinois. The event featured professional and amateur ten-player mechanical paintball competition.[1][2]

Adrenaline won the professional division, finishing one point ahead of Los Angeles Infamous in the final round. PPS SFO won the amateur division.[1][3]

Background and venue

[edit]

The tournament introduced the ICPL's national classic-format competition. Contemporary coverage identified the event as the league's first ten-player mechanical tournament.[1]

Badlandz hosted games on woodland and Hyperball fields. Official team schedules identify playing areas named Hyperball, Woods 1 and Woods 2.[4]

The event brought together teams associated with different periods of tournament paintball. Professional entrants included Adrenaline, Los Angeles Infamous, Chicago Aftershock, San Diego Dynasty, All Americans, Ironmen and Master Blasters.[3]

Competition structure

[edit]

The official results recorded twenty professional teams and nineteen amateur teams. Teams played eight preliminary games, followed by separate professional and amateur semi-final and final rounds.[2]

Nine teams advanced in each division. The semi-finals comprised three groups of three teams, with each team playing twice. The three group winners advanced to a final round in which each finalist again played two games.[2]

The results used accumulated game scores rather than a single head-to-head championship match.[2]

Professional competition

[edit]

Chicago Aftershock led the professional preliminary standings with 769 points from eight games. Saberwolves finished second overall in the preliminary rankings, followed by The Misfits.[2]

Chicago Aftershock, Adrenaline and Los Angeles Infamous won their respective semi-final groups and advanced to the final round.[2]

Contemporary coverage

[edit]

Infamous published a report on 20 June 2019 describing its return to mechanical ten-player competition. Its roster combined current players, former Infamous members and players associated with other teams, including Travis Lemanski, Chris LaSoya, Cody Mickowski, Archie Montemayor and Ryan Brand.[1]

GoSports also produced a documentary about the inaugural event, subsequently available through Major League Paintball Plus.[5]
