2012 PSP Phoenix Open
The 2012 PSP Phoenix Open was a Paintball Sports Promotions (PSP) tournament held from 20–22 April 2012 at the Glendale Youth Sports Complex in Glendale, Arizona, United States. It was the second event of the 2012 PSP season and featured professional and divisional RaceTo competition, including a pump division.[1]
Houston Heat won the professional division, defeating Moscow Red Legion 6–3 in the final. Los Angeles Ironmen finished third and X-Factor fourth.[2][3]
Venue and format
[edit]Although named for Phoenix, the tournament took place in neighbouring Glendale. PSP's registration record identifies the venue as the Glendale Youth Sports Complex; WARPIG's contemporary preview described it as the University of Phoenix Glendale Soccer Complex.[1][4]
The professional division used RaceTo-7. Divisions 1 and 2 played RaceTo-5, while Divisions 3 and 4 offered RaceTo-4 and RaceTo-2 competitions. An open pump division also played RaceTo-2.[1][2]
PSP reused the field layout from the 2012 PSP Galveston Island Open. WARPIG reported that the decision reflected the severe weather at Galveston and the professional teams' inability to complete their matches there.[4]
Postponed Galveston matches
[edit]The outstanding professional competition from the Galveston Island Open was completed at the Phoenix venue on Thursday, 19 April, before the Phoenix Open began. Tampa Bay Damage defeated Houston Heat 7–1 in that final.[5]
Those matches and their placings belonged to the Galveston Island Open. They were separate from the Phoenix Open results listed below.[3][5]
Professional competition
[edit]Houston Heat's Phoenix preliminary matches included victories over CEP, Seattle Thunder and Moscow Red Legion, alongside a defeat by Omaha Vicious. Heat then defeated X-Factor 6–5 in the semi-finals and Moscow Red Legion 6–3 in the final.[6]
Moscow reached the final by defeating Los Angeles Infamous 7–3 in the quarter-finals and Los Angeles Ironmen 7–5 in the semi-finals. X-Factor defeated Omaha Vicious 7–4 in the other quarter-final.[3]
