2008 NPPL Asian Invitational
The 2008 NPPL Asian Invitational, also described contemporaneously as the Asian Invitational Championship 2008, NPPL Asia 2008 and Flora Fest Paintball 2008, was an international paintball tournament held at Stadium Bandar Penawar, Johor, Malaysia, during the weekend of 2 and 3 August 2008.[1][2][3]
A contemporary report named Kiwi of New Zealand as winners and Warriors of Australia as runners-up. The event also featured appearances by four American professional teams: San Diego Dynasty, Infamous, OC Bushwackers and XSV.[1][2]
Event
[edit]The tournament formed part of Malaysia's Flora Fest activities. A pre-event announcement by a Red Sevens participant identified the first weekend of August as the tournament weekend, while reports published on 4 August described the completed competition.[2][3][4]
The opening ceremony at Stadium Bandar Penawar was officiated by Malaysian Tourism Minister Azalina Othman Said. Malaysian Paintball Association president Azizul Rahman Abdul Wahab and National Professional Paintball League representative Chuck Hendsch were also reported as attending.[1]
The Malaysian report identified participating countries as Malaysia, Singapore, Iran, Indonesia, the United Arab Emirates, the Philippines, New Zealand, Australia and Japan.[1] Red Sevens represented Singapore and published accounts of their participation.[2][3]
Reported results
[edit]A report published by Jejak Azalina on 5 August 2008 recorded the following results. It did not identify the competition division.[1]
| Reported placing | Team | Country |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Kiwi | New Zealand |
| 2 | Warriors | Australia |
| Third-place entries | Persian League and Demondz | Iran and Malaysia respectively |
The report named both Persian League and Demondz in connection with third place, without explaining whether they shared the placing or competed in separate categories.[1]
In an account published in June 2009, Patrick Tan separately listed Demonz Red as second runners-up at the 2008 NPPL Invitational Asia. He also recorded the team's Best Malaysia Team Award, which included a trip to the following year's Huntington Beach tournament.[5]
Professional team appearances
[edit]A participant report published immediately after the event confirmed the attendance of Dynasty, Infamous, OC Bushwackers and XSV.[2]
A separate participant account described an exhibition match involving Dynasty and XSV, with Tourism Minister Azalina taking part.[6]
