Pirates (New Zealand Paintball Team)
Pirates was a New Zealand competitive paintball team active in documented tournament competition from 2005 to 2009. The team was captained by Hugo Kappes and was associated through Kappes with the Hamilton-based Final Impact team and Final Impact paintball field.[1][2]
History
[edit]Pirates entered the 2005 Auckland Queen’s Birthday Superball. In an earlier entry discussion, a post signed “Captain Hugo” stated that Pirates intended to attend despite possibly being one player short.[1] The final results placed Pirates tenth overall and second in the Plate competition.[2]
Pirates competed throughout the 2007 Auckland Super 5s at Actions Paintball. The published results record the team in the February, March, April, June, July and August rounds. After the August round, Pirates was fourth in Division Two with 1,497 cumulative points. The series team register names Hugo Kappes under Pirates; it does not provide a complete roster.[3]
At the 2007 Northland Open, Pirates finished third in the Amateur division. The event report also records Johnny of Pirates receiving the “move of the day” award and Daryl of Pirates receiving the wooden spoon award.[4]
Pirates later finished second in Division Two at the 2009 Palmerston North Queen’s Birthday Tournament, behind Muppets.[5]
Identity
[edit]Contributor identification confirms that the New Zealand tournament entries under the name Pirates refer to the same team, and identifies Hugo Kappes as its captain and owner. The same identification links Pirates to Kappes’s earlier involvement with Final Impact and its Hamilton field. The surviving contemporary records independently identify Kappes with both teams, but do not define a formal organisational relationship between them.[1][3][6]
The name Not the Pirates appeared as a separate three-player entry at a Hamilton tournament in February 2008. The organiser listed Dominik, James and Jase for that entry.[7] Contributor clarification identifies the name as an in-joke referring to Pirates, but it is not known whether the entry comprised Pirates members or was created by other players to make fun of the team. Its result is therefore not included in Pirates’ results.
