XXX, also rendered as Triple X and xXx, was a New Zealand competitive paintball team documented from 2005 to 2007. The team placed fourth in the 2005 New Zealand tournament ranking series, third at the 2006 Auckland Queen's Birthday tournament and second in Division One of the 2006 Super 5s.[1][2][3]

Tournament history

[edit]

2005 season

[edit]

XXX was listed as a confirmed entrant before the 2005 Auckland Queen’s Birthday Superball. A contemporary discussion said that several Menace players were competing for XXX at the event.[4]

A retrospective account of the 2005 New Zealand ranking series placed XXX fourth at the Kumeu event with 40 ranking points. As overseas teams Sydney SWAT and Sydney Shock occupied the first two places but did not receive ranking points, XXX shared fourth in the season ranking with HSR.[1]

The retrospective standings are an attributed account by a participating organiser rather than a recovered official results sheet.[1]

2006 season

[edit]

On 6 February 2006, a participant reported that XXX finished fourth in an eight-team five-player tournament at an indoor Auckland venue. Kaos and Snipers were reported as joint winners, with Legion third.[5] The surviving discussion is titled Northland open, but the report identifies an Auckland venue; the event is therefore not presented as a confirmed edition of the Northland Open.

At the Auckland Queen's Birthday tournament in June, a contemporary report placed XXX third behind Addicted and Saints and ahead of Phantom. The author explicitly described the order as being recalled from memory and rendered the team name as “XXX (triple X)”.[2]

XXX finished second in Division One of the 2006 Super 5s with 7,533 championship points. Menace won the division with 8,688 points, while Phantom and Saints placed third and fourth.[3]

2007 Super 5s

[edit]

XXX opened the 2007 Auckland Super 5s season with second place and 816 points in February, followed by third place and 622 points in March.[6]

An organiser's cumulative table published in July listed XXX fifth in Division One with 1,438 points. A reply posted the same day stated that XXX no longer existed.[6] The cumulative table continued to display the team's points through August, but XXX does not appear in the recovered April, June, July or August round results. The surviving evidence therefore supports documented competition through March 2007 and a contemporary report that the team had ceased operating by July; it does not establish an exact date or circumstances.

Identity and personnel

[edit]

Contemporary sources use XXX, xXx and the explanatory form XXX (triple X). These are treated as spellings of the same New Zealand team.[2][6]

The 2005 Queen's Birthday discussion states that several Menace players were playing for XXX, but it does not name them or establish that XXX was a Menace squad.[4] A 2007 roster post included an XXX heading without any player names, and no verified complete roster has been recovered.[6]
