Southern Raiders was an Invercargill-based New Zealand competitive paintball team. The team finished second at the 2000 Dunedin City Challenge and appeared in the 2000 Valhalla National Rankings.[1][2]

Southern Raiders was a separate team from the Auckland and Northland team Raiderz, which was also recorded as Raiders in some tournament sources.

History

[edit]

An archived profile of Ken Ryder identifies him as a founding member and former leader of Southern Raiders.[3] The undated profile does not establish the team's precise formation date.

2000 season

[edit]

Southern Raiders competed at the five-player Dunedin City Challenge in 2000. The contemporary report identifies the team as representing Invercargill. Players were limited to 200 paintballs per end, and the competition used a field of pine trees and constructed barricades.[1]

The team scored 190 points in the morning round and 145 in the afternoon round, advancing to the final against Christchurch team Damage Inc. Southern Raiders lost the two-end final 55–40. Damage Inc led the first end 45–0; the report publishes only the combined score after both ends.[1]

Dave Hancox is named in the report's account of the Southern Raiders final. A second player is identified only as Marty. His surname has not been established and is not inferred from other South Island team records.[1]

Ken Ryder is also mentioned as playing at the event, but the surviving passage does not assign him unambiguously to Southern Raiders. His documented association with the team therefore does not establish his participation in its Dunedin line-up.[1][3]

Southern Raiders was ranked 20th in the 2000 Valhalla National Rankings with an average ranking value of 56.3333333333333.[2] Valhalla values were calculated rankings rather than raw tournament points or the result of a single national championship.
