MacDev Ronin (Malaysia Paintball Team)
MacDev Ronin was a Malaysian tournament paintball team based in Kuala Lumpur. The team competed domestically in the Malaysian National Paintball League (MY-NPL) and Malaysian Paintball Official Circuit (MPOC), and represented Malaysia in international competitions including the Paintball World Cup Asia and the 2009 Intercontinental Cup.[1][2]
Among its principal results, MacDev Ronin finished second in Division 1 at the 2008 World Cup Asia, won the second round of the 2010 MPOC and placed fourth at the 2010 World Cup Asia.[3][4][5]
History
2007 season
MacDev Ronin was competing in the top division of the MY-NPL by February 2007. At the opening round of the season, held at Padang Merbok in Kuala Lumpur on 3–4 February, the team finished second behind Nemesis.[6]
At the fifth and final MY-NPL round, held at the Malaysian Paintball Academy in Petaling Jaya in November, MacDev Ronin placed fourth in Division 1 behind Demonz, TAG Effect and Nemesis.[7]
2008 season
MacDev Ronin opened its 2008 MY-NPL campaign with third place in Division 1 at the first round in Petaling Jaya.[8] The team again finished third at the third round, held at the Malaysian Paintball Academy on 31 May–1 June.[9]
At the season finale in November, MacDev Ronin finished second behind Nemesis Legion. The league also presented MacDev Ronin with its Best Club award for 2008.[10]
The team subsequently competed in Division 1 at the 2008 Paintball World Cup Asia, held at Xtion Paintball Park in Bukit Jalil from 13 to 16 November. MacDev Ronin advanced to the final after competing against teams including Datis of Iran, Sydney SWAT of Australia, Raskal and Demonz Red.[3]
Thailand's Infernal won the final, with MacDev Ronin finishing second. The Xtioneers of Malaysia placed third and Sydney SWAT fourth.[3][11]
Following the tournament, MacDev representative Bourke Grundy issued a statement congratulating the team and confirming the manufacturer's intention to continue supporting it. The statement was published on MacDev’s website and reproduced contemporaneously by Villain Paintball.[12]
2009 season
MacDev Ronin entered the fourth round of the 2009 MPOC at Xtion Paintball Park on 13–14 June. The team finished second in Division 1 behind Nemesis Legion, with X-Fox third and Xmenz fourth.[13]
In July, MacDev Ronin travelled to France for the Millennium Series tournament at Disneyland Paris. Tournament schedules document the team’s participation in the Division 2 competition, where its preliminary opponents included 2easy Warsaw, Ronins PBW Haguenau and London Nexus.[14]
MacDev Ronin also represented Asia in the associated Intercontinental Cup. The team finished third in its preliminary group after recording a victory against Assala Libreville and losses against Budapest Bullets and Riga Chilli Peppers.[15] MacDev Ronin was then defeated 4–0 by Marseille Icon in the quarter-finals.[16] A later history of the competition ranked the team seventh overall.[17]
During the same year, members of MacDev Ronin conducted a paintball clinic and MacDev technical course at Survivor Paintball Games in Melinsung, Sabah.[18]
2010 season
MacDev Ronin reached the Division 1 final at four of the five rounds of the 2010 MPOC.[5]
The team finished second behind Raskal at the opening round in January before winning the second round at Bukit Jalil in April. Demonz Red placed second at that tournament, followed by X-Fox and Australia's Perth City Trauma.[4][19]
MacDev Ronin finished second again at the third round in June, behind Perth City Trauma.[20] At the season finale, held at MPSJ Stadium in Subang Jaya on 2–3 October, the team lost the Division 1 final 3–2 to Demonz Red.[21] Demonz Red, rather than MacDev Ronin, was recorded as the overall 2010 MPOC Division 1 champion.[22]
Outside the MPOC, MacDev Ronin won the Open division of the 2010 Sabah Youth Cup. The team also placed fourth at the Kuching Chief Minister's Cup, according to its season review.[5]
MacDev Ronin concluded the season by finishing fourth in Division 1 at the 2010 World Cup Asia at Padang Merbok, Kuala Lumpur. Iran's Datis won the division, followed by Bad Elements of France and STK of Australia.[23] The World Cup Asia also presented MacDev Ronin with its Best From Nation award as the highest-placed Malaysian team in the division.[5][23]
2011 season
MacDev Ronin finished third at the second round of the 2011 MPOC, the Chief Minister of Malacca Cup, in March. Demonz Red won the division, followed by the Xtioneers.[24]
At the fourth round, held at Xtion Paintball Park in Bukit Jalil on 11–12 June, MacDev Ronin reached the final and finished second behind Nemesis Legion. The result was subsequently published by the host venue, Xtion Paintball Park.[25]
MacDev Ronin’s tournament accounts from 2011 document guest appearances by Australian players associated with STK, including Daniel Woods.[26]
Later appearances
The team's PBLeagues record documents two further Division 1 X-Ball appearances during 2013. MacDev Ronin finished fifth among six teams at the opening MPOC round in January and eighth among ten teams at the Malaysian Open in May.[2]
The team’s original founding date and subsequent organisational status have not been conclusively established.
Sponsorship and equipment
MacDev Ronin was sponsored by Australian paintball equipment manufacturer MacDev. A 2008 manufacturer statement described MacDev Ronin as a supported team and congratulated it following its second-place World Cup Asia result.[12]
The team used MacDev electronic tournament markers, including the Cyborg RX. A limited Ronin private-label version of the Cyborg RX was promoted in 2009, with ten examples reported as having been produced.[18]
MacDev Ronin's 2010 season review identified the following organisations as team supporters:
The same review announced that Empire Paintball would provide equipment for the team’s 2011 season.[5]
