Damage Inc was a Christchurch-based New Zealand paintball team documented in South Island competition during 2000–2001. It won the 2000 Dunedin City Challenge and finished second at the 2001 Invercargill three-player tournament.[1][2]
Contemporary forum contributors explicitly distinguished the South Island Damage Inc from the North Island team using the name Damage.[3]
History
Dunedin City Challenge, 2000
Damage Inc competed at the 2000 Dunedin City Challenge, organised by The Ultimate Game Dunedin. The tournament used five-player teams with a limit of 200 paintballs per player per end. The report identifies Damage Inc as the Christchurch entry.[1]
Damage Inc scored 55 points in the morning round and 245 in the afternoon round, qualifying for the final against Southern Raiders.[1]
The team won the two-end final 55–40. Tony Witheridge of Paintball Supply NZ played as a guest for Damage Inc. This documents his participation at that event rather than permanent membership.[1]
The contemporary article index lists the tournament under November 2000, but the report does not supply a numerical playing date.[1][8]
Invercargill triples, 2001
Damage Inc entered the 2001 Invercargill three-player tournament, played over two days on the Hill and Moat fields. The other entries were Flashpoint, TeamX and Fear Factory.[2]
The report explicitly identifies TeamX as Damage Inc's second team. It describes TeamX as comprising one relatively new player and two returning veterans, without naming its players.[2]
Damage Inc recorded 56 points on Saturday and 119 on Sunday, then lost the final to Flashpoint 4–49. The daily totals represent the respective day's matches, rather than cumulative weekend scores.[2]
The report is credited to Mark Abbott and includes a first-person account of Damage Inc's play. It does not provide a complete playing roster.[2]
Contemporary forum activity
In a November 2001 team-contact discussion, contributors identified Ric and JiNX as contacts for the South Island team. JiNX explicitly corrected its name to Damage Inc and signed as Mark. The discussion separately associated the North Island Damage team with Jason Newport.[3]
On 7 November 2001, a contributor using the name Noddy supplied ultimategame.co.nz as the team's website and signed with the Damage Inc name.[4]
In another discussion on 29 November 2001, JiNX, signing Mark and Team Damage Inc, described a field-development project and announced a planned construction journal on that website. The post does not establish that every proposed field was completed or define ownership of the business.[6]
Documented personnel
| Published name | Date or context | Documented involvement | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tony Witheridge | 2000 Dunedin City Challenge | Guest player | [1] |
| Mark Abbott | 2001 Invercargill triples | Credited author of the report, including a first-person account of Damage Inc's play | [2] |
| Ric | November 2001 contact discussion | South Island team contact | [3] |
| JiNX / Mark | November 2001 forum discussions | Identified himself with Damage Inc and supplied team information | [3][5][6] |
| Noddy | 7 November 2001 | Supplied the team website and signed as Damage Inc | [4] |
These records are not a complete roster. The available evidence does not establish surnames for Ric or Noddy, or conclusively identify JiNX/Mark as Mark Abbott. The contact discussion does not unambiguously identify a captain.[3]
Sponsorship and support
On 25 November 2001, JiNX described specific support received by Damage Inc:[5]
- Southprint supplied the team banner and vehicle graphics.
- Badger supplied casualwear and printing on team shirts.
- Paintball Supply N.Z. provided equipment pricing and marker tuning.
These are contemporary statements of support, not evidence of particular contract terms or sponsorship periods.[5]
Recorded tournament results
| Year | Competition | Result | Final score | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2000 | Dunedin City Challenge | 1st; defeated Southern Raiders | 55–40 | [1] |
| 2001 | Invercargill three-player tournament | 2nd; defeated by Flashpoint | 4–49 | [2] |
TeamX was a separate entry at the 2001 Invercargill tournament and is not combined with Damage Inc's results.[2]
Distinction from Team Damage
The contemporary team-contact discussion explicitly distinguishes Damage Inc in the South Island from Damage in the North Island.[3]
A separate newspaper report reproduced on the forum identifies Team Damage of the Kāpiti Coast, captained by Jason Newport, as fourth in Division Two at the 2001 Nationals. That result belongs to the separately identified Team Damage entry and is not included in Damage Inc's tournament record.[7]
