Team Insane (also known as Insane) was a New Zealand competitive paintball team based in Auckland, active during the early 2000s. Formed around 2000 by players associated with the South Auckland Miniature Wargames Club and Red Alert Paintball Club, the team competed in national and regional three-player and seven-player tournaments.
Insane, also recorded as Team Insane and later as East Auckland Insane, was an Auckland-based New Zealand tournament paintball team. Contemporary records document the team in three-player, five-player and seven-player competition between 2000 and 2007, followed by recruitment for continued competition in 2008.[1][2][3][4][5]

Insane's most successful documented season was 2001, when it finished second in the national three-man team rankings compiled by the Valhalla database, with 181.7 ranking points. The team also competed in seven-man tournaments, including the Northland Open, RotoVegas in Rotorua and the New Zealand Nationals.[1]
Insane finished second in the 2001 Valhalla three-player national rankings with 181.7 ranking points.[4]

Formation
2000 season
Team Insane was formed in Auckland around 2000, bringing together players from the South Auckland Miniature Wargames Club and the Red Alert Paintball Club.
A contemporary report of the 2000 New Zealand Paintball Nationals described Insane as a newly assembled team whose players had come together only days before the tournament. This establishes the assembly of that event squad rather than a precise formal founding date.[1]

According to founding member Michael Earley, the team emerged from a group of younger players interested in organised tournament paintball who joined with existing members of the Red Alert paintball community.[4]
Insane entered Division Two and recorded 80 preliminary points. It did not qualify for the divisional final.[1]

Kevin Lunt served as team captain. Other early members included Andy Lunt, Neil Morris, Vitaly Miheev, Francis Hambrook and Adam Hambrook.
On 1 December 2000, Insane competed at the 2000 Auckland Indoor 3-Man Open at Urban Combat in Pakuranga. The team finished fourth with 15 points, behind Kamo Karzi, Solidaire and Saints.[2]

Red Alert was associated with Auckland paintball operator Lance Potter, who was involved with the field before its later operation by Gavin Harrison.
2001 season
The new team adopted the name Insane and began competing in regional and national tournaments during 2000.
Insane competed at the 2001 Northland Open at Jubilee Park in Whangārei on 25 February 2001. It finished tenth in the combined standings with 60 points.[3]

Early competition
The October 2001 Valhalla standings recorded Insane in both seven-player and three-player competition. The team placed 21st among 23 entries in the seven-player rankings with 28.2 points. Its contributing appearances included the Northland Open, RotoVegas and the New Zealand Paintball Nationals.[4]

Insane's name appears in the 2000 national Valhalla rankings published by the New Zealand paintball website Mercenaries Star.
At the 2001 New Zealand Paintball Nationals, Insane recorded 223 preliminary points and did not qualify for the divisional finals.[5]

The team recorded nine ranking points in the published standings.[2]
In the three-player rankings, Insane placed second with 181.7 ranking points, behind DamNatives Red. A second Insane squad, published as Insane B, placed 24th with 28.3 points.[4]

The Valhalla database compiled results from tournaments throughout New Zealand, creating a national comparison of teams competing in different regions.
Insane B was a secondary squad of Team Insane rather than an unrelated team. Its separate ranking entry is retained because the two squads competed independently in the contributing three-player tournaments.

By 2001, Insane was competing in both seven-man and three-man formats.
2002 competition and Kaos entry
The seven-man team entered several major New Zealand tournaments, while its three-man entries achieved stronger results in the national season rankings.
On 27 January 2002, Insane competed in a three-player tournament at Combat Zone in Ardmore, Papakura. The team recorded 135 points in the published standings.[6]

Later activity
At the 2002 Northland Open, members of Insane played as guests for Havoc to complete its event squad. The players were not named. This was an event-specific guest arrangement and does not indicate a merger between the teams.[7]

Team members continued participating in tournament paintball during 2002.
A report of the 2002 Auckland 5-Man Tournament, held at Actions Paintball on 26 October, identified the second-placed entry as Kaos (ex-Insane). Kaos recorded 750 points.[8]

Earley recalls competing at the Volcanic Rotorua tournament in 2002. He also recalls refereeing tournaments in Rotorua during 2002 and 2003 alongside Vitaly Miheev.[4]
The published wording establishes a connection between Kaos and Insane at that event, but it does not identify the players involved or establish that Insane permanently changed its name to Kaos.[8]

These activities reflect the continued involvement of former or existing team members in the paintball community, although they do not establish that Insane entered every event concerned.
Captaincy
The precise date when Team Insane ceased competing is not documented.
In a contemporary team-contact discussion preserved from January 2002, Kevin Lunt explicitly identified himself as Insane's captain.[9]

Players
The same discussion referred to Mike as the team member with internet access. It did not identify Mike as captain or provide his surname.[9]

The membership information is based on Michael Earley's firsthand recollections of the team during its early years.[4]
The interim standings published in August placed Insane seventh in Division Two with 325 cumulative championship points.[10]

The group was also associated with Jared Finlay and Tabitha Crump, although their participation in specific tournament lineups has not been established.
A roster published during the series named Jarrod Findlay, Tabitha Crump, Francis Hambook, Gareth Appleby, Justin Spencer and Sam Houlihan. The contemporary post misspelled Hambook's surname as Hambrock; the corrected spelling is based on participant identification.[10]

Individual rosters may have differed between events and between three-man and seven-man competition.
The source did not identify a captain and does not establish that every listed player participated in every round.

Tournament history
East Auckland Insane and 2008 recruitment
2000 season
In January 2008, Jarrod Findlay used the name East Auckland Insane while recruiting for the team and a proposed development squad. East Auckland Insane was a later styling of the same Insane organisation rather than a separate team.[11]

Insane appears in the 2000 Valhalla national ranking table with a recorded score of nine ranking points.[2]
Findlay stated that surplus players at the 2007 Nationals had provided the nucleus of the development squad. The new squad had not been formally named, although Asylum had been suggested. The post described planned twice-monthly training, five-player tournament participation, and promotional and refereeing work for sponsor Actions Paintball.[11]

The Valhalla system evaluated performances from participating tournaments and incorporated results into an annual national table.
The source establishes recruitment and planned activity. It does not confirm that the proposed development team subsequently competed or adopted the Asylum name.

Its records were not necessarily a complete account of every tournament held in New Zealand, as the compiler acknowledged that some historical results were missing.[3]
The proposed squad should not be confused with the later Asylum Paintball field and business. A former participant has identified Asylum Paintball founder Vitaly Miheev as an earlier Insane player, but no recovered source establishes that the proposed Asylum squad became the field or business. The field's later history should remain in its own article.

The 2000 entry establishes Insane's participation in the national tournament scene by that year, although the surviving table does not provide a complete match-by-match record for the team.

Insane competed in three recorded seven-man tournament events during 2001.
* Insane and Team Insane were styles used for the main team.
* Insane B was a secondary Insane squad.
* East Auckland Insane was a later name for the same organisation.
* Kaos (ex-Insane) was an event entry connected with former Insane players, but the source does not establish a permanent team renaming.
* The proposed development-squad name Asylum was never confirmed as a competing team in the recovered records.

The Valhalla database lists the team in the Northland Open, RotoVegas in Rotorua and the New Zealand Nationals.[1]
Results should remain under the entry name printed by each source.

The team's second-place position was an overall national season ranking, rather than necessarily a second-place finish at one individual tournament.
The scores came from different tournament and ranking systems and should not be compared directly.

The ranking database calculated team performance from tournament-round results, applying different formulas to preliminary and final rounds.[3]

Insane B
The 2001 national three-man standings also list a second team entered as Insane B.

Insane B finished 24th in the published season rankings, recording 28.3 points from the opening round of the Combat Zone three-man competition.[1]

The separate entry indicates that Insane fielded more than one squad in three-man competition.

Valhalla treated named secondary teams as independent entries rather than combining their ranking points with the principal squad.[3]

The individual lineup of Insane B has not been established.

2002 Volcanic Rotorua
Players associated with Insane continued attending tournament events in 2002.

Earley recalls competing at the 2002 Volcanic Rotorua tournament and later being involved in tournament refereeing in the region.[4]

A historical account of the event has been associated with a provisional ninth-place Plate result for Insane, although the original event report has not yet been recovered for confirmation.

The team's participation and results during 2002 are less completely documented than its 2001 season.

Competition formats
Team Insane competed in both seven-man and three-man tournament paintball.

Seven-man paintball
Seven-man competition was a major tournament format in New Zealand during the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Teams fielded seven players in elimination-style games, often using fields containing natural cover and purpose-built tournament obstacles.

Major events on the New Zealand calendar included the Northland Open, Rotorua tournaments and the New Zealand Nationals.

Insane competed in these events during the 2001 season.

Three-man paintball
Three-man competition used smaller squads and was commonly held on more compact tournament fields.

Insane participated in the Indoor 3-Man Open Competition and Combat Zone three-man events in 2001.

Its second-place national ranking in the format was considerably stronger than its seven-man ranking during the same season.

The 2001 Valhalla standings demonstrate that the two formats were ranked separately, allowing teams to appear in different positions depending on the competition category.

Valhalla rankings
The Mercenaries Star website maintained the Valhalla database, which compiled tournament results into national team rankings.

The system was designed to compare teams competing at events throughout New Zealand.

Ranking scores were calculated by converting tournament-round results into percentage-based performance values, with additional weighting for final rounds.[3]

Valhalla also treated secondary squads as separate teams where they competed under distinct names.

This methodology explains why Insane and Insane B appeared as separate entries in the 2001 three-man rankings.

The team's published ranking scores should be distinguished from individual match scores or tournament finishing positions.

Subsequent involvement of players
Several players associated with Team Insane remained active in paintball after the team's early tournament appearances.

Michael Earley continued playing, refereeing and working in the paintball industry in New Zealand and overseas.

He later worked with Auckland paintball operations including Lock N Load Paintball and Asylum Paintball.

Vitaly Miheev remained active in Auckland tournament paintball and was subsequently associated with the operation of Asylum Paintball at Kingseat.

These later activities represent the continued participation of individuals from the original team rather than the continuation of Team Insane as an organisation.

Insane finished second in the 2001 Valhalla three-player national rankings with 181.7 ranking points.[4]

History

[edit]

2000 season

[edit]

A contemporary report of the 2000 New Zealand Paintball Nationals described Insane as a newly assembled team whose players had come together only days before the tournament. This establishes the assembly of that event squad rather than a precise formal founding date.[1]

Insane entered Division Two and recorded 80 preliminary points. It did not qualify for the divisional final.[1]

On 1 December 2000, Insane competed at the 2000 Auckland Indoor 3-Man Open at Urban Combat in Pakuranga. The team finished fourth with 15 points, behind Kamo Karzi, Solidaire and Saints.[2]

2001 season

[edit]

Insane competed at the 2001 Northland Open at Jubilee Park in Whangārei on 25 February 2001. It finished tenth in the combined standings with 60 points.[3]

At the 2001 New Zealand Paintball Nationals, Insane recorded 223 preliminary points and did not qualify for the divisional finals.[5]

In the three-player rankings, Insane placed second with 181.7 ranking points, behind DamNatives Red. A second Insane squad, published as Insane B, placed 24th with 28.3 points.[4]

Insane B was a secondary squad of Team Insane rather than an unrelated team. Its separate ranking entry is retained because the two squads competed independently in the contributing three-player tournaments.

2002 competition and Kaos entry

[edit]

On 27 January 2002, Insane competed in a three-player tournament at Combat Zone in Ardmore, Papakura. The team recorded 135 points in the published standings.[6]

At the 2002 Northland Open, members of Insane played as guests for Havoc to complete its event squad. The players were not named. This was an event-specific guest arrangement and does not indicate a merger between the teams.[7]

A report of the 2002 Auckland 5-Man Tournament, held at Actions Paintball on 26 October, identified the second-placed entry as Kaos (ex-Insane). Kaos recorded 750 points.[8]

The published wording establishes a connection between Kaos and Insane at that event, but it does not identify the players involved or establish that Insane permanently changed its name to Kaos.[8]

Captaincy

[edit]

In a contemporary team-contact discussion preserved from January 2002, Kevin Lunt explicitly identified himself as Insane's captain.[9]

The same discussion referred to Mike as the team member with internet access. It did not identify Mike as captain or provide his surname.[9]

2007 return

[edit]

Insane returned to documented tournament competition in the 2007 Auckland Super 5s series. The published results recorded Insane eleventh in the June round with 265 points and tenth in the July round with 60 points.[10]

The interim standings published in August placed Insane seventh in Division Two with 325 cumulative championship points.[10]

The source did not identify a captain and does not establish that every listed player participated in every round.

East Auckland Insane and 2008 recruitment

[edit]

In January 2008, Jarrod Findlay used the name East Auckland Insane while recruiting for the team and a proposed development squad. East Auckland Insane was a later styling of the same Insane organisation rather than a separate team.[11]

The source establishes recruitment and planned activity. It does not confirm that the proposed development team subsequently competed or adopted the Asylum name.

[edit]

The following names have documented or contributor-confirmed relationships with Insane:

 • Insane and Team Insane were styles used for the main team.
 • Insane B was a secondary Insane squad.
 • East Auckland Insane was a later name for the same organisation.
 • Kaos (ex-Insane) was an event entry connected with former Insane players, but the source does not establish a permanent team renaming.
 • The proposed development-squad name Asylum was never confirmed as a competing team in the recovered records.

Results should remain under the entry name printed by each source.
