Villain Paintball was a Malaysian paintball media project and website that published tournament reports, results, photography, videos, interviews, equipment news and commentary about Malaysian and Asian paintball. The project began in 2006 as a group producing videos of local team practices and tournaments under the name Villain Videos.[1][2]

Its surviving Blogger archive covers activity from May 2006 to June 2012 and includes contemporary material about the Malaysian National Paintball League, Malaysian Paintball Official Circuit, Paintball Asia League Series, Paintball World Cup Asia and numerous smaller Malaysian competitions.[3]

History

Video origins

The Villain project began after members of the group watched a DVD of a Malaysian paintball tournament and decided to experiment with filming and editing their own paintball footage.[2] Kherox and Kaymo supplied a digital video camera and began recording team practices. Shafril, also identified as “Da Boss” of Team el-Bandito, subsequently joined Kherox, Kaymo and Caranthir in the original video crew.[2]

The first published material included practice videos featuring WK Army and el-Bandito. The productions combined tournament and practice footage with edited music soundtracks.[2]

In June 2006, Villain released its first paintball DVD, On Parole, covering the second leg of the Malaysian Paintball Official Circuit. The DVD was introduced at the 2006 Asia Cup and MPOC third leg at Bukit Jalil, with copies also distributed through Xtion Paintball.[4][5]

In September 2006, Villain Videos announced that it had been appointed as official media for the 2007 Malaysian National Paintball League season.[6]

Website and tournament coverage

The Villain Paintball blog developed beyond its original video work into a wider news and documentation resource. Its coverage included tournament announcements, results, first-person competition reports, team histories, player interviews, photographs, equipment releases and reproduced material supplied by organisers.

The archive documented major Malaysian series including MY-NPL and MPOC, regional events under the Paintball Asia League Series, and editions of the Paintball World Cup Asia. It also preserved accounts of smaller events including the Nemesis X-Tour, Pengerang Open 2008, Nescafe Kickstart Paintball Tournament 2008, Johor Paintball League, Sultan of Kedah Cup 2008 and Malaysian Super Lite.

Villain Paintball also covered Malaysian participation in overseas tournaments, including the Millennium Series in Europe, and published interviews with figures in the regional paintball community.

In 2011, the Malaysian Paintball Official Circuit included Villain Paintball among the media organisations it thanked for promoting the league, alongside Ramped, Resident Evil Chef, Paintball News Asia and S E B U R O.[7]

Mobile application

In January 2011, Villain Paintball released a free application through Nokia's Ovi Store. The application was intended to deliver updates from the website to Nokia mobile telephones.[8]

The latest post located in the surviving blog archive was published on 7 June 2012.[3] The absence of later posts does not establish when or whether the project formally ceased operating.

Villain 1-on-1 Challenge Series

The Villain 1-on-1 Challenge Series was a sequence of informal individual paintball competitions presented by Villain Paintball between December 2007 and April 2008. Three numbered events were documented, with support from the Malaysian Paintball Academy (MAPAAC) and MacDev.[9][10]

The competition developed from one-on-one challenges made through the blog's online chat box. It was organised as a competitive training exercise open to players from any division.[9]

First challenge

The first challenge was held on 2 December 2007. Competitors initially used MacDev Droid markers supplied through MAPAAC and MacDev. Each two-minute game was limited to one loader of paint.[9]

Nineteen players competed. Eight advanced from the preliminary stage before three-player elimination games were used to determine the finalists. KK of Delta Rovers defeated Rina of Sogo Ballbusters in the final.[10]

Second and third challenges

The second challenge was held at MAPAAC in Petaling Jaya on 27 January 2008.[11][12] The revised format permitted competitors to use their own markers and carry additional paint. Players were required to touch the opposing starting gate and return to their own gate to win.[11]

Eleven entries competed. Pengiran Khairoden Nizam, known as Oden and then a MacDev Ronin player, defeated El-Gato of Banzai in two consecutive games in the final.[12][13]

The third challenge was held at MAPAAC on 13 April 2008. Nineteen players participated and Oden retained the title.[14][15] The surviving report does not identify his final opponent.

Challenge Date Entries Winner Runner-up
1 2 December 2007 19 KK Rina
2 27 January 2008 11 entries Pengiran Khairoden Nizam (Oden) El-Gato
3 13 April 2008 19 Pengiran Khairoden Nizam (Oden) Not recorded

Historical value

Villain Paintball's archive preserves contemporary information about Malaysian tournament paintball during a period in which many organiser websites, forums and result pages subsequently disappeared. Its strongest records include dated announcements, reproduced official results and first-person reports.

Editorial commentary, unverified claims and promotional material published by the site require corroboration when used as historical sources.
