History

[edit]

Establishment

[edit]

Xtion Paintball Park was established in 2003 at the National Xtreme Sports Park, within the National Sports Complex at Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur.

The facility was officially launched by Malaysia's Minister of Youth and Sports on 12 July 2005.[2]

The business operated under the Xtion Paintball name, with historical contact and payment information identifying Rela Ria Sdn. Bhd. as the company associated with its operations.[6]

Xtion developed recreational playing facilities alongside dedicated tournament fields, providing a venue for Malaysian players entering organised competition.

The organisation later celebrated its tenth anniversary in April 2013, confirming 2003 as the year from which it dated its establishment.[7]

Early international tournaments (2004–2006)

[edit]

Xtion became associated with the development of international tournament paintball in Malaysia through a sequence of competitions held during the mid-2000s.

In December 2004, Xtion Paintball and Galactec organised Nation Cup 2004, an international tournament involving teams from the Asia-Pacific region.

The organisers subsequently described the event as a pilot project for larger international competitions.[3][4]

The following year, Xtion hosted the Asia Pacific Paintball Championship 2005, also known as the Asia Pacific Paintball Challenge.

According to Xtion's contemporary promotional material, the championship attracted more than 80 teams from over ten countries, with appearances by American professional teams including San Diego Dynasty, the Ironmen and Legacy.[3]

The competition was promoted through Malaysian television broadcaster TV3 and received support from international paintball equipment manufacturers.[3][4]

Paintball World Cup Asia

[edit]

Xtion Paintball Park hosted the inaugural Paintball World Cup Asia from 8 to 10 December 2006.

The tournament formed part of the Paintball Asia League Series and was organised by Xtion Paintball in collaboration with Malaysian government ministries and international paintball organisations.

A contemporary report published on 19 December 2006 recorded approximately 90 participating teams.

The Iranian team Datis won Division 1 and was also reported as the overall 2006 PALS champion.[8]

World Cup Asia subsequently developed into a major international tournament attracting teams from across Asia and other regions.

Later editions moved to Langkawi, although Xtion continued providing facilities for teams preparing for the championship.

In October 2011, the park announced that it would reproduce the official World Cup Asia field layout for training ahead of the tournament in Langkawi.[9]

Malaysian Paintball Official Circuit

[edit]

Xtion was closely associated with the formation and development of the Malaysian Paintball Official Circuit (MPOC).

Established in 2004, MPOC provided regular divisional tournaments for Malaysian teams. Xtion served as a competition venue and training facility.

The park's historical website described the venue as the birthplace of MPOC and PALS.[1]

On 28 June 2011, Xtion published the results of the fourth round of that year's MPOC season, held at the park and promoted as the Xtion Paintball Cup.

The division winners were:

Division Winning team
Division 1 Nemesis Legion
Division 2 Simpsons
Division 3 Grammaton Clerics
Division 4 Armada Shooter

The results were published directly by Xtion Paintball Park.[10]

The venue also hosted the opening round of the 2012 MPOC season on 7–8 January.[11]

Tenth anniversary (2013)

[edit]

Xtion celebrated its tenth anniversary in April 2013 with a five-player tournament and activities for players and visitors.

The Xtion Paintball Cup took place on 20 April.

Team Killer Beez 2 won the anniversary tournament, according to the results announcement published by the venue on 22 April 2013.[7][12]

Later activity (2014–2019)

[edit]

Xtion continued hosting recreational activities, team training and promotional events during the 2010s.

In 2014, the venue was used for the Malaysian paintball reality television programme 1 Peluru, produced for RTM/TVi.

The programme featured 16 teams competing across a series of challenges. Xtion reported that it provided the venue for episodes 1, 2, 5 and 6.[13]

Xtion's historical website remained active in 2016, publishing notices about changes to its website and email addresses.

The last identified announcement on that website was dated 6 October 2016.[14]

However, an independent record confirms subsequent activity.

On 17 August 2019, the Malaysia Retailers Association Youth Wing held a five-player recreational competition called Operation: No Man Left Behind at Xtion Paintball in Bukit Jalil.

The association's 2020 annual report recorded six participating teams, with medals and certificates awarded to the winners.[5]

This is the latest independently verified activity identified at the venue.

The available sources do not establish its eventual closure date or current operating status.

Facilities

[edit]

Xtion Paintball Park provided separate areas for recreational and tournament paintball.

Its historical website described five playing fields, comprising a two-acre recreational area known as the Mayhem Zone and four tournament-sized fields measuring approximately 200 by 120 feet.[1]

The tournament fields used inflatable Sup'AirBall bunkers and could accommodate different competitive layouts.

The facility also advertised:

  • Compressed-air and carbon dioxide filling equipment.
  • Rental mechanical and electronic paintball markers.
  • Spectator seating.
  • Equipment and merchandise.
  • Changing and washroom facilities.
  • Parking and refreshments.

Xtion offered training opportunities for competitive teams alongside recreational sessions, corporate team-building activities and private events.[1][2]

Player development and media

[edit]

Xtion provided facilities for Malaysian tournament teams preparing for domestic and international competition.

Its historical website documented training activities involving teams including Raskal Malaysia, Nemesis Legion and Xtioneers.[1][15]

The park also participated in paintball media and promotional projects.

These included the 2011 Energizer Night Strike event, which used ultraviolet lighting and fluorescent paintballs for nighttime speedball competition, and television segments broadcast by Astro Arena, TV3, TV9 and 8TV.[3]

Its involvement in 1 Peluru in 2014 further documented the use of the venue for paintball-related television production.[13]

Historical significance

[edit]

Xtion Paintball Park was one of the facilities associated with the expansion of organised Malaysian tournament paintball during the 2000s.

Its involvement in Nation Cup 2004, the Asia Pacific Paintball Championship 2005 and the inaugural World Cup Asia in 2006 connected Malaysian players and organisers with international competition.

The venue also supported domestic tournament activity through MPOC and provided training facilities for teams competing in PALS.

Its history is closely connected to the development of Malaysia as a destination for international tournament paintball during the early years of the Asian competitive circuit.
