Smash (New Zealand Paintball Team)

From WikiPaintball

Smash was a New Zealand three-player competitive paintball team documented between 2002 and 2003. It competed at the January 2002 Gathering and the 2002 Hawke’s Bay Triples, before appearing as Smash (Phantom) at the 2003 Hawke’s Bay Triples.[1][2][3]

A contributor familiar with the New Zealand teams identifies the three records as the same team. The 2003 parenthetical styling documents an association with Phantom, but the surviving sources do not establish whether Smash was a formal Phantom squad, a development team or an event-specific entry. Smash was distinct from the later Smash and Grab.

Tournament history

[edit]

2002

[edit]

Smash competed at the Gathering held at Actions Paintball in Swanson on 26 January 2002. Ten teams played three-player hopper-ball centre-flag games. Smash recorded eight points in the published table.[1]

The source describes Saints 2 as the winner, three teams on sixteen points as equal second and Phantom on ten points as third. It does not assign a formal placing to Smash, so no position is inferred from the table.[1]

On 2–3 February, Smash competed at the 2002 Hawke’s Bay Triples at Stoney Creek Ranch in Hastings. Seventeen teams played three-player centre-flag games. Smash scored 1,000 points and finished sixth in the preliminary table. Only the two leading teams, GPS and Rush, contested the final.[2]

2003

[edit]

At the 2003 Hawke’s Bay Triples on 8–9 February, the published results used the styling Smash (Phantom). The team scored 290 points and appeared sixth in the nine-team score table.[3]

The tournament report separately records a championship game between Phantom Menace and Damage Red. Smash did not participate in that final.[3]
