Gozo Xtreme Paintball

From WikiPaintball

Gozo Xtreme Paintball was a recreational paintball facility located in Nadur, on the Maltese island of Gozo. Also listed as Xtreme Paintball, the operator maintained an outdoor playing site on Triq Wied ir-Riħan and offered recreational paintball activities.

The venue is documented through historical event advertising, commercial directories and surviving social media records. Its association with a paintball activity advertised in May 2008 makes it an important part of the early documented history of paintball in Gozo.

History

[edit]

Early paintball activity in Nadur

[edit]

One of the earliest surviving references to organised recreational paintball in Gozo appears in the programme for Gozo 1234, a multi-day festival held from 1 to 3 May 2008.

The programme advertised paintball activities in Nadur on 2 and 3 May 2008. Participants were instructed to meet at Nadur's main square and book using telephone number 7947 3427. The advertised discounted price was €10 per person. [1][2]

The same telephone number was subsequently associated with Gozo Xtreme Paintball, suggesting a connection between the 2008 festival activity and the later documented business. However, the festival programme does not identify the operator by name or confirm that the 2008 activity took place at the later Triq Wied ir-Riħan field.

The original opening date of Gozo Xtreme Paintball has not been independently established.

Recreational operations

[edit]

Gozo Xtreme Paintball operated an outdoor paintball facility on Triq Wied ir-Riħan, Nadur.

The venue maintained a Facebook page under the name Gozo Xtreme Paintball, advertising recreational paintball games and publishing photographs of players and activities. [3]

Surviving posts reproduced in a historical social media archive include material dated 19 April 2014, 25 October 2014, 24 December 2014 and 28 December 2014.

A post from 20 September 2015 referred to preparations for the next paintball season. Further photographic material was published on 14 November 2016 and 15 January 2017. [3]

These records document the operator's public activity across several years, although individual photograph publication dates should not automatically be interpreted as the dates on which games took place.

Location and facilities

[edit]

The playing site was identified as Triq Wied ir-Riħan, Nadur, in northeastern Gozo.

The location is supported by the operator's surviving Facebook information, commercial mapping directories and historical online listings. [3][4]

A Yellow Malta business directory entry identifies Xtreme Paintball in Nadur and retains the telephone number 7947 3427. The directory gives Brock House, Triq il-Qala, as its address, although this should not be confused with the separately documented playing location. [4]

The former playing location was also referenced in an April 2023 travel account by Cynthia Peter, who described reaching the area while walking near San Blas and identified it through an online map as Gozo Xtreme Paintball. [5]

The 2023 reference establishes that the location remained identifiable under its historical name. It does not establish that the facility was still accepting bookings at that time.

Later history

[edit]

A photograph published by the operator on 15 January 2017 is among its latest dated public records identified in the surviving archives. [3][6]

No independently verified final operating date or formal closure announcement has been recovered.

Although some business directories continue to retain the name, location and historical opening hours, these listings do not establish that the venue remains operational.

Historical significance

[edit]

Gozo Xtreme Paintball represents an early documented commercial paintball presence on the island of Gozo.

The 2008 festival programme provides evidence that organised recreational paintball was being advertised to visitors and residents in Nadur well before many of the later documented Maltese paintball clubs and tournament organisations emerged.

The matching telephone number links this early activity to the later Gozo Xtreme business, although the exact relationship remains unconfirmed.

The operator's surviving records also demonstrate recreational paintball activity in Gozo during the 2010s.

Other historical paintball activities documented elsewhere on Gozo, including a Victoria Scout Group game at Nuffara Hill in October 2009, should not automatically be attributed to Gozo Xtreme without evidence connecting the organisers or venues.

Gozo Xtreme Paintball was geographically and commercially distinct from Extreme Paintball (Ta' Qali), the operator based on the main island of Malta. No common ownership has been established.
