Avenger Paintball
Avenger Paintball Gun, Inc. was an American paintball equipment company based in Kirkwood, New York. Active during the early 1990s, the company marketed the Avenger AK-1, a mechanical semi-automatic paintball marker engineered and manufactured by Akraturn Manufacturing. The AK-1 was based on the operating system of the Montneel Designs Z-1 and was exhibited at the 1994 NPPL World Cup.[1][2]
History
[edit]Avenger was associated with Akraturn Manufacturing, a precision machining company in southern New York that produced components for the aerospace and computer industries.
Akraturn had previously manufactured components for Montneel Designs, including parts for the Icon-Z and Z-1 paintball markers.[2]
Following commercial difficulties involving Montneel and its manufacturing contractors, Akraturn developed its own version of the Z-1 design, marketed as the Avenger AK-1.
According to the historical Montneel account published by VintageRex, the marker was originally developed for Pursuit Marketing Inc. (PMI). PMI ultimately declined the product, reportedly because of its manufacturing cost, and Akraturn marketed the design independently under the Avenger name.[2]
The AK-1 was exhibited at the 1994 NPPL World Cup in Florida. A contemporary promotional brochure identifies the business as Avenger Paintball Gun, Inc., with a postal address in Kirkwood, New York.[1]
The company's precise establishment and cessation dates have not been verified.
Avenger AK-1
[edit]The AK-1 was a .68-calibre mechanical semi-automatic paintball marker using an operating system derived from the Montneel Z-1.
Its construction emphasised precision machining and durability, with components manufactured from aluminium alloys and steel rather than stamped metal.[1]
The original 1994 manufacturer brochure documented the following features:
- Machined aluminium and steel construction.
- Stone-honed brass barrel with a quick-change mounting system.
- Internal gas passages without exposed external hoses.
- CO2-compatible valve system.
- Three-position removable foregrip.
- Adjustable front and rear sights with a scope mounting provision.
- Anti-double-feed mechanism.
- External velocity adjustment.
- Captive screws for simplified disassembly and maintenance.
The brochure advertised a firing capability of seven rounds per second and stated that each marker was individually tested before shipping.[1]
Construction
[edit]The AK-1 incorporated several modifications to the Montneel design, including reinforced receiver components and additional steel inserts.
Historical collector examinations identify differences in its valve assembly, trigger mechanism and receiver construction. Although some Montneel components are interchangeable with the AK-1, the two markers are not identical.[3]
Relationship to other markers
[edit]The AK-1 belonged to a group of semi-automatic paintball markers derived from the Montneel Z-series during the early 1990s.
Related designs included the USI Eliminator, PMI Mustang and Boxer.[2]
The Avenger AK-1 is unrelated to the later Brass Eagle Avenger, a separate semi-automatic marker introduced by Brass Eagle as part of its Aegis Series in 2001.[4]
