Avenger
Avenger Paintball was an American paintball equipment brand associated with Akraturn Manufacturing, a precision engineering company based in New York, United States. Operating under the name Avenger Paintball Gun, Inc., the business marketed the Avenger AK-1, a mechanical semi-automatic paintball marker developed from the Montneel Designs Z-series platform.[1][2]
The AK-1 was documented at the 1994 NPPL World Cup and appeared in the VintageRex historical paintball database under the manufacturer name Avenger.[3][4]
History
[edit]Origins
[edit]The Avenger AK-1 was developed by Akraturn Manufacturing, a tool and die company operating in the Southern Tier region of New York.
Akraturn had previously supplied machined components for Montneel's original Icon-Z paintball markers during the early 1990s. Its experience manufacturing components for the Montneel platform contributed to the development of its own semi-automatic marker.[2][5]
The resulting AK-1 was marketed under the Avenger name through Avenger Paintball Gun, Inc., which advertised an address in Kirkwood, New York.[1]
The marker was based on the general operating principles of the Montneel Z-series but incorporated changes to its construction and components.
A historical account published by VintageRex describes the AK-1 as one of several markers developed by manufacturers following the commercial success of the Montneel Z-1. According to that account, Akraturn initially developed its revised marker for Pursuit Marketing Inc. (PMI), but subsequently marketed it independently after a proposed distribution arrangement did not proceed.[5]
Commercial availability
[edit]A contemporary AK-1 promotional brochure was distributed at the 1994 NPPL World Cup in Florida.
A copy preserved by Paint Magazine was collected at the tournament and establishes that the marker was being promoted by 1994.[3]
The brochure identified Avenger Paintball Gun, Inc. as the business marketing the marker and Akraturn Manufacturing as its developer and manufacturer.[1][2]
VintageRex records the AK-1 as a 1995 model and lists a production period of 1995 to 1997.[4]
The exact number of commercially sold markers has not been established.
Paintball markers
[edit]Avenger AK-1
[edit]The Avenger AK-1 was a .68-calibre mechanical semi-automatic paintball marker using a Montneel-style valve system.
Its construction incorporated a machined aluminium and steel receiver, internal gas passages, removable barrel and direct-feed arrangement.
The manufacturer's promotional material described the following features:[2]
- Lightweight machined aluminium and steel construction.
- Stone-honed brass barrel with a quick-change mechanism.
- Three-position removable front grip.
- Adjustable front and rear sights with a scope mounting provision.
- Anti-double-feed mechanism intended to reduce paintball jams.
- Wide trigger designed for rapid semi-automatic operation.
- External velocity adjustment.
- Internally routed gas passages without exposed hoses.
- Winter valve intended for operation with liquid CO₂.
- Optional summer valve and replacement components.
The original brochure advertised a maximum firing capacity of seven rounds per second.
It also stated that every marker was bench-tested before shipping and carried a one-year manufacturer's guarantee.[1][2]
These performance and quality claims were made by the manufacturer and have not been independently verified.

Relationship with Montneel Designs
[edit]The AK-1 was one of several semi-automatic paintball markers developed from or influenced by the Montneel Z-1 during the early 1990s.
Other related designs included the Ultimate Sport Inc Eliminator, Paintball Games of Dallas Boxer and Falcon Inc Checkmate.
Akraturn's earlier manufacturing work for Montneel gave it experience with the original Z-series construction.
The company's AK-1 incorporated modifications to the original design rather than being marketed as an official Montneel product.[5][6]
VintageRex's historical account identifies the AK-1 as a higher-quality alternative to some contemporary Montneel-derived markers, although this characterisation is based on retrospective accounts rather than comparative performance testing.[5]
