ASTRO PLATUN, also styled Astro Platun or simply Platun, was a Malaysian paintball game show broadcast on Astro Ria in 2007. The programme combined televised entertainment with organised paintball and involved Tactical Action, the Malaysian National Paintball League (MY-NPL) and the Malaysian Paintball Referee Organisation (M-PRO).[1]

The first episode was broadcast on 2 April 2007. Thirteen weekly episodes were scheduled, with the season finale broadcast on 25 June 2007.[2]

Broadcast

[edit]

Promotional material announced that ASTRO PLATUN would begin on 2 April 2007 and air on Astro Ria each Monday at 22:30.[1]

The programme was initially planned for a one-hour broadcast slot. A contemporary notice reported that a scheduling issue reduced the transmitted programme to approximately 30 minutes, requiring its producers to shorten the material prepared for each episode.[1]

An episode list circulated in June 2007 records weekly broadcasts from 2 April through the thirteenth and final episode on 25 June.[2] The surviving list contains links for episodes 1–9 and 11–13 but omits a link for episode 10; this does not establish that the tenth broadcast was cancelled.

Participants and format

[edit]

The recurring group promoted as the “Platun” consisted of:

Published name Role
Da Baron Platun captain
Solo Platun member
Black Rose Platun member
Vegas Platun member
Supah Star Platun member
Da Boss Blue-team coach
Soon Red-team coach

Contemporary promotional material credited Astro, Tactical Action, MY-NPL and M-PRO in connection with the programme.[1] The surviving announcement does not define the contractual or production responsibility of each organisation.

The programme used opposing red and blue teams under their respective coaches. Available contemporary summaries do not provide a complete account of its rules, contestant-selection process or scoring system.

The episode listing identified Shion Lim of Team X-Pursuit Penang as appearing in the season finale and associated him with the winning team.[2]

Paintball organisations

[edit]

The involvement of MY-NPL connected the programme with Malaysia's established tournament-paintball structure. M-PRO provided an association with organised paintball refereeing, while Tactical Action was active in Malaysian paintball event operations.[1]

ASTRO PLATUN should not be confused with later Malaysian paintball television productions, including the 2013 reality programme 1 Peluru.[3]

Contemporary coverage

[edit]

Clips of the programme were uploaded to YouTube during its original broadcast run. The contemporary episode index divided most episodes into three uploaded sections and preserved the announced broadcast dates.[2]

ASTRO PLATUN was subsequently covered in issue 3 of the Malaysian paintball publication Welt Magazine.[4] The surviving notice confirms that the programme appeared in the issue but does not provide a complete copy of the feature.

Promotional material described ASTRO PLATUN as the world's first paintball game show.[1] No sufficiently independent international survey has been located to verify that claim, and it should not be stated as an established record.
