2012 NPPL Huntington Beach Open

From WikiPaintball

The 2012 NPPL Huntington Beach Open, promoted as the Surf City USA Open, was a National Professional Paintball League tournament held from 29 March to 1 April 2012 in Huntington Beach, California, United States.[1]

The season-opening event took place on the beach north of Huntington Beach Pier. Sacramento XSV won the professional competition, defeating Tampa Bay Damage 3–0 in the final.[2][3]

Venue and organisation

[edit]

Three enclosed artificial-turf fields were constructed over levelled sand beside the pier, with a trade show at street level along Pacific Coast Highway. The event also included grandstands, team paddocks and a spectator VIP area.[2]

The tournament expanded to four playing days to accommodate its combination of traditional seven-player and RaceTo competitions. Division 4 play began on Thursday, with the event concluding on Sunday.[2][3]

Competition formats

[edit]

The professional division used seven-player RaceTo-5 matches, while Division 1 used seven-player RaceTo-4. Divisions 2, 3 and 4 also offered traditional seven-player capture-the-flag competition.[2]

Separate Division 3 and Division 4 five-player competitions used RaceTo-4. Pump teams played five-player RaceTo-2. No Division 2 RaceTo competition took place at this event.[3]

Professional competition

[edit]

Fourteen professional teams competed. The archived official scoreboard records quarter-final victories for XSV over New England Avalanche, Arsenal over Infamous, Tampa Bay Damage over San Antonio X-Factor, and San Diego Dynasty over Edmonton Impact.[4]

XSV subsequently defeated Damage 3–0 within the final's 15-minute regulation time. Dynasty finished third and Arsenal fourth.[3]
