2008 PSP season

From WikiPaintball

The 2008 PSP season was the national tournament season organised by Paintball Sports Promotions in the United States. It comprised five events, beginning with the Phoenix Open in March and concluding with the World Cup in October. Competition included the professional National Xball League (NXL), divisional X-Ball and five-player tournaments.[1][2]

Los Angeles Ironmen won the NXL championship through the World Cup playoffs. RNT Allstarz, Fierce and Velocity Wrecking Crew won the Division 1, Division 2 and Division 3 X-Ball series respectively.[2][7]

Competition

[edit]

The professional NXL began the season with twelve teams. San Diego Aftermath, Tampa Bay Damage, Edmonton Impact and St. Louis Avalanche joined the professional field for 2008. Aftermath had won the 2007 PSP Open Class series championship, while Avalanche had won that division at the 2007 World Cup.[3]

Divisional X-Ball comprised Divisions 1, 2 and 3. At the opening tournament, Division 1 and Division 2 matches had a seven-point victory limit and a 15-minute game clock; Division 3 used a five-point limit with the same clock.[3]

Division 3 and Division 4 five-player competition appeared at all five events. Division 2 five-player results were recorded at Chicago and the World Cup. Masters X-Ball was also contested at the World Cup.[2]

NXL championship

[edit]

The first four tournaments determined seeding for the NXL championship at the World Cup. The championship was decided by the World Cup competition rather than by the highest accumulated regular-season points total.[6][7]

Dynasty entered the World Cup with 240 points, ahead of Los Angeles Ironmen on 235 and Boston Red Legion on 210.[2]

St. Louis Avalanche did not attend the Northeast Open, leaving eleven participating NXL teams there. San Diego Aftermath did not attend the World Cup.[6][7]

Los Angeles Ironmen defeated Philadelphia Americans two games to one in the championship final. The Ironmen won the opening game 9–2, Philadelphia won the second 8–7, and the Ironmen took the deciding game 9–4.[7]
