Billy Ceranski
William "Billy" Ceranski is an American former professional paintball player and paintball industry executive. He is best known for his playing career with Chicago Aftershock and the Ironmen, and for his leadership roles at PMI, KEE Action Sports, GI Sportz and Kore Outdoor.[1][2]
Ceranski began playing paintball in 1988 and subsequently became involved in operating paintball fields, retail stores and equipment distribution businesses. He was appointed chief executive officer of Kore Outdoor in December 2020.[1][3]
Playing career
[edit]Early involvement
[edit]Ceranski began playing paintball in 1988. Following a period serving in the United States Marine Corps, he became involved in the Northern California paintball scene.
He opened a small paintball retail store and, together with three business partners, purchased an indoor paintball facility where he had previously played.[1]
Ceranski subsequently relocated to Chicago to compete with Chicago Aftershock, a professional tournament team associated with Renick Miller.
He also assisted Miller with the development and management of Badlandz Paintball Field in Crete, Illinois, during the early 1990s.[1]
Chicago Aftershock
[edit]Ceranski became a longstanding member of Chicago Aftershock during the team's successful period in professional ten-player competition.
He competed alongside players including Todd Adamson, Danny Love, Mike Bruno, Gary Noblett and Ryan Williams.
Contemporary tournament records identify him on Aftershock's professional roster at the 1999 Skyball tournament in Toronto, Canada.[4]
He remained with Aftershock during the early 2000s, appearing on the team's published National Professional Paintball League (NPPL) professional rosters in 2001 and 2002.[5][6]
In August 2001, Aftershock won the professional ten-player division at the NPPL Atlantic City Gambler's Open.
The team subsequently secured the 2001 NPPL professional ten-player season championship.[7][8]
In October 2002, Aftershock won the professional ten-player championship at the Paintball World Cup in Kissimmee, Florida.
Ceranski was also included on Aftershock's roster for the inaugural professional National Xball League competition at the 2003 Mardi Gras Open in New Orleans.[9][10]
Guest appearances
[edit]In addition to his regular professional team commitments, Ceranski occasionally competed as a guest player.
At the 1998 NPPL World Cup, he played with Ground Zero in the professional five-player division. The team finished second.[11]
At the 2002 Pan Am Circuit tournament in Phoenix, Arizona, he appeared with Phoenix Heat B in the amateur five-player competition.
Phoenix Heat B won the division. Contemporary reporting noted that Ceranski did not participate in every match.[12]
Ironmen
[edit]Ceranski subsequently joined the Ironmen organisation during the professional X-Ball era.
According to his official Kore Outdoor biography, he concluded his regular professional playing career with the Ironmen.[1]
He later returned to recreational and classic-format competition, including appearances with former Aftershock teammates in the International Classic Paintball League (ICPL).[1]
Paintball industry career
[edit]Early business activities
[edit]Ceranski began working in paintball retail and field operations before moving into equipment distribution.
While playing for Aftershock in Chicago, he worked at Direct Connect, a wholesale paintball equipment business.
Following the merger of Direct Connect and PMI, Ceranski joined the company's sales department full-time in 1997.
He was promoted to sales manager in 1998.[1]
KEE Action Sports
[edit]In 2006, PMI and National Paintball Supply merged to form KEE Action Sports.
Ceranski remained with the business, holding several senior management positions, including vice-president of international sales, vice-president of worldwide sales and vice-president of marketing.[1]
KEE operated a portfolio of established paintball equipment brands, including Empire Paintball, JT USA and Spyder.
GI Sportz
[edit]Following GI Sportz's acquisition of KEE Action Sports in 2015, Ceranski retained his position as vice-president of worldwide sales.
He was promoted to president of GI Sportz in 2019.[1]
Kore Outdoor
[edit]In 2020, GI Sportz underwent a financial restructuring that resulted in the sale of its operations to a newly established company, Kore Outdoor Inc.
The transaction was completed on 1 December 2020.
Ceranski, previously president of GI Sportz, was appointed chief executive officer of Kore Outdoor.[3]
The new business retained a portfolio of major paintball brands, including GI Sportz, Empire, Tippmann, JT, Spyder and VForce.
In December 2021, Kore Outdoor completed the acquisition of GI Sportz Europe Limited through its European subsidiary.[13]
In 2022, Kore Outdoor announced the completion of a further ownership transaction involving Ironbridge Equity Partners and members of the company's management team.
Ceranski continued serving as chief executive officer.[14]
As of 2026, Kore Outdoor's official management directory continued to identify Ceranski as CEO.[1]
Recognition
[edit]Ceranski has been recognised by paintball publications for his professional playing career and contributions to the equipment industry.
In 2021, Iconic Paintball included him in its retrospective assessment of 50 notable professional paintball players, highlighting his playing career with Aftershock and the Ironmen, and his subsequent business activities.[2]
In April 2023, Iconic Paintball's coverage of the NXL Sunshine State Major identified Ceranski among the initial 20 figures associated with the unveiling of the Iconic Paintball Hall of Icons. However, he does not appear in the individual profiles currently published in the Hall of Icons' inaugural class archive.[15]
