The 2009 Millennium Series Fuengirola Beach Cup was the opening event of the 2009 Millennium Series season, held on the beach beside Sohail Castle in Fuengirola, Málaga, Spain, from 24 to 26 April 2009.[1] Severe wind and rain disrupted the tournament, leaving outstanding matches to be completed at subsequent Millennium events.[2][3]

Frankfurt Syndicate ultimately won the professional Champions Paintball League (CPL) competition, defeating London Nexus 5–2 in the postponed final at Paris-Disney on 3 July 2009. SK Moscow finished third.[4][5][6]

Venue

[edit]

The event was staged on the beach in front of Sohail Castle. A contemporary announcement identified Mercury Paintball and Millennium Series Ltd as the organisers of the opening round.[1]

The advertised venue arrangements included artificial turf laid over the sand, netted playing fields, spectator seating and a trade exhibition.[7]

Weather disruption and postponement

[edit]

High winds interrupted play on Saturday, 25 April. A contemporary report relaying the organisers' announcement stated that Division 2 and M5 matches, together with the remaining CPL preliminary games, were to continue on Sunday, while other outstanding competition would be carried forward.[2]

Rain caused further disruption on Sunday. A subsequent Russian-language report described damage to the fields and tournament infrastructure and published results for Division 2 and the M5 groups.[3]

In May, contemporary coverage reported that outstanding Málaga matches would be divided between the European Masters at Bitburg and the following Paris event.[8] The official Paris schedule subsequently reserved its opening Friday slots for the Málaga semi-finals and finals.[9]

The matches were played on Friday, 3 July, during the 2009 Millennium Cup weekend, but remained part of the Fuengirola competition.[4][5][9]

Contemporary reporting described Syndicate's victory as the first German team win in the Millennium Series CPL.[5]
