2009 Millennium Cup

From WikiPaintball

The 2009 Millennium Cup, also known as the Disney Millennium Cup, was a Millennium Series paintball event held at Disney Village, near Paris, France, from 3 to 5 July 2009.[1] The weekend included the Millennium Cup, an associated Intercontinental Cup and an M5 competition. Chilli Peppers Riga won both the Millennium Cup and the Intercontinental Cup.[2]

The event also hosted outstanding semi-finals and finals from the earlier Málaga tournament. Those matches remained part of the Málaga competition rather than the Paris tournament.[3][4]

Venue and organisation

[edit]

The tournament occupied the former Ventury 2 car park opposite the Vinci car park at Disney Village. Admission was free.[5] A contemporary post-event report in Le Parisien described five netted playing fields and attendance by approximately 1,000 competitors and at least 6,000 spectators.[6]

The official Friday schedule placed the postponed Málaga matches at the beginning of the day, followed by the Paris preliminary programme and evening Intercontinental Cup matches.[3]

Competition structure

[edit]

The Millennium Cup preliminary draw brought teams from different Millennium divisions into the same groups. For example, Group E included London Nexus, Ronins PBW Haguenau, 2easy Warsaw and MacDev Ronin, while Group C included DC Arsenal Dynasty, Hellwood Paris, All Russians Moscow and Relentless.[3]

The Intercontinental Cup ran alongside the main competition. Its eight teams were divided into two preliminary groups before the quarter-finals.[7]

The Paris event did not appear as a points-scoring round in the official 2009 CPL season table, which recorded Málaga, Bitburg, London and Antalya.[8]

Millennium Cup

[edit]

Chilli Peppers Riga defeated DC Arsenal Dynasty in the Millennium Cup final. This was separate from Riga's victory over Joy Stockholm in the Intercontinental Cup final.[2]

Preliminary groups

[edit]

The published preliminary tables recorded Joy Stockholm and Chilli Peppers Riga as group winners, each with three victories.[7]

3 Kuala Lumpur Demonz MacDev Ronin

Knockout competition

[edit]

The quarter-final results were published as follows.[9]

Round Winner Result Opponent
Quarter-final Joy Stockholm 4–0 Assala Libreville
Quarter-final Marseille Icon 4–0 MacDev Ronin
Quarter-final Kuala Lumpur Demonz 4–0, awarded Budapest Bullets
Quarter-final Chilli Peppers Riga 4–2 Johannesburg Dynamix
Semi-final Joy Stockholm 4–0 Kuala Lumpur Demonz
Semi-final Chilli Peppers Riga 4–0 Marseille Icon

Semi-final scores are recorded in the contemporary results report.[10]

The Demonz–Budapest quarter-final was a walkover rather than a played 4–0 victory. Demonz captain Ben Yaw subsequently explained that Budapest withdrew with two injured players and concentrated on its other competition.[11]

Chilli Peppers Riga defeated Joy Stockholm in the final. Kuala Lumpur Demonz finished fourth.[2][11]

M5 and Activision Cup

[edit]

Kuala Lumpur Demonz also reached the Activision Cup final, losing 2–1 to Rats.[12] Yaw's subsequent account described the team's route through the Division 3 competition into the Activision Cup quarter-finals and final.[11]

This result was separate from Demonz's fourth-place finish in the Intercontinental Cup.

Postponed Málaga matches

[edit]

The official Friday programme reserved its opening slots for the Málaga semi-finals and finals.[3] Frankfurt Syndicate defeated SK Moscow 5–3 in the semi-final and London Nexus 5–2 in the final to win the outstanding Málaga competition.[4]

Although played at Paris-Disney, these results belonged to the earlier Málaga event.
