The 1998 NPPL Las Vegas Open was the opening tournament of the 1998 National Professional Paintball League season, held in Las Vegas, Nevada, in March 1998. Organised by DYE Precision, it included five-man and ten-man competition.[1][2]

Rage won the professional ten-man division, while Lockout and Outta Control won Amateur A and Amateur B respectively. Run won the five-man competition.[3][4]

Organisation and format

[edit]

WARPIG identified the event as the DYE Precision Las Vegas NPPL Tournament. Refereeing teams included Ironmen, Image and Personal Vendetta.[1]

NPPL five-man competition returned to Las Vegas after the 1997 tournament had operated alongside a separate Great Western Series five-man event. Fourteen teams entered the 1998 five-man competition.[1]

Ten-man amateur competition was divided into Amateur A and Amateur B, with separate semi-finals and finals.[1][3]

Playing conditions

[edit]

The tournament used desert fields. WARPIG described one layout containing two parallel ravines and a central ridge with brush, providing cover for crawling players and an elevated view for spectators.[1]

Wind and airborne dust affected the ten-man competition. WARPIG reported dust-related regulator problems and maintenance work by Air America technicians. Strong gusts also disrupted the vendors' tent.[1]

Five-man competition

[edit]

The five-man competition consisted of preliminary, semi-final and final rounds. Run won with 138 final-round points, followed by Swat, Damage and Voodoo.[4]
