The 1996 NPPL Pittsburgh Open was a paintball tournament held at Urban Assault near McDonald, Pennsylvania, during the National Professional Paintball League's 1996 season. Contemporary reporting described the venue as approximately 20 miles south of Pittsburgh, in Washington County.[1]

The Ironmen won professional ten-man, Image won professional five-man, Fusion won amateur ten-man and Nobodys won amateur five-man. Highlanders won the novice five-man competition.[2][3]

Venue and conditions

[edit]

The tournament used both open and woodland fields. Five-man competition took place on two open fields, with additional woodland fields used for ten-man competition. The open layouts incorporated earth walls, ridges and mounds, including a central area formed by interlocking star-shaped earthworks.[2]

Paintball Games International reported cold, wet weather. Keith Hahn's account in Paintball Sports described six fields in use and reported that the tournament attracted 54 teams.[1][2]

Competition

[edit]

Professional ten-man

[edit]

The Ironmen qualified eighth for the semi-finals before advancing to the final round alongside Aftershock, Image and Washington Reign.[2]

The Ironmen finished with 224 final-round points, five ahead of Aftershock. Their last game against Image ended without penalties, securing the tournament victory.[2]

Professional five-man

[edit]

Image won its first professional five-man tournament appearance. The team finished ahead of Rage, the Ironmen and the Palm Beach Predators.[2]

Amateur competition

[edit]

Fusion won the amateur ten-man final round with 300 points, ahead of Team X-treme, Nemesis and the Paraplegic Turtles.[2]

Nobodys won amateur five-man ahead of Lockout, Venom MD and Fusion. The contemporary report described this as Nobodys' second successive five-man victory of the season.[2]

Novice competition

[edit]

Ten teams entered the novice five-man competition, played on Sunday. Paintball Games International described the novice event as an opportunity for new teams to experience NPPL competition.[2] ClassicScores records Highlanders as the winners.[3]
