The National Three-Man Centre Flag Competition, also known as the Invercargill Three-Man and 3-Man Centre Flag Nationals, was a paintball tournament held in Invercargill, New Zealand. Organiser Ken Ryder dated its establishment to 1994. The competition became associated with Queen's Birthday weekend and was nicknamed the Winter Games.[1]

History

[edit]

1994

[edit]

According to Ryder's 1998 account, four teams entered the inaugural 1994 competition, which was won by S.L.O.B.s.[1]

1996

[edit]

Participation reached eleven teams at the 1996 competition, according to Ryder.[1]

Contemporary advertising called the event the 3-Man Centre Flag Open and named Ryder as the contact. The published calendar listed 15 June while also identifying the event with Queen's Birthday, leaving its exact dates unresolved.[4]

1998

[edit]

The 1998 competition attracted four teams over one and a half days. Dave Hancox was identified as a co-organiser. Teams played on the Hill and Moat fields, with matches comprising three ends of up to five minutes each.[1]

S.L.O.B.s and WarPigs reached the final. The contemporary report gives a nine-point margin but does not explicitly identify the winning team.[1]

1999

[edit]

The 1999 tournament took place on 6 June at the Southern Paintball Sports Club's fields, replacing the Muritangi Scout Camp venue used for previous editions. Four teams competed over one day. Deviants defeated Psychosis 66–23 in the final.[2]

2000 and 2001

[edit]

Flashpoint won the competition in 2000, as recorded in the following year's report.[3]

At the 2001 tournament, four teams competed over two days on the Hill and Moat fields. Flashpoint retained its title by defeating Damage Inc 49–4 in the final.[3]
