Raskal Malaysia, also known as Team Raskal or simply Raskal, is a Malaysian tournament paintball team associated with Xtion Paintball and the development of competitive paintball in Malaysia during the 2000s and 2010s.

The team reportedly originated in 2003 among players who regularly participated in paintball at Xtion Paintball in Sunway Xtreme Park. It subsequently competed in Malaysian national tournaments and international competitions in Europe and Asia.

Raskal became an established competitor in the Malaysian Paintball Official Circuit (MPOC), winning several tournament rounds and finishing third overall in Division 1 in 2008. The team also competed at the Millennium Series in Europe and reached the Division 1 final of the 2013 Paintball World Cup Asia in Langkawi.

In 2014, Raskal Malaysia won tournaments in Singapore, India and Malaysia. The Raskal name later became associated with Raskal Sports, a Malaysian paintball equipment distributor and tournament organiser established in 2016.

History

[edit]

Formation and early years

[edit]

Raskal Malaysia reportedly originated in 2003 among a group of players who regularly played at Xtion Paintball in Sunway Xtreme Park, Malaysia.

A description published in May 2005 stated that the team had formed in 2003 and referred readers to its own website.[1]

The account provides evidence that the Raskal name was in use within Malaysian paintball more than a decade before the establishment of Raskal Sports Sdn Bhd.

The team developed during a period of growth in organised Malaysian paintball, when local fields and tournament organisers were establishing regular competitions and attracting international participation.

Xtion Paintball became an important location in this development, providing facilities for recreational players and competitive teams.

International competition in 2005

[edit]

By September 2005, Team Raskal Malaysia was participating in international tournament paintball.

A contemporary entry list for the Millennium Series Campaign Cup included the team among registered competitors.[2]

The appearance established Raskal's participation in European tournament paintball during the early years of Malaysia's international competitive development.

The team's roster and final placing at the event have not yet been confirmed.

Malaysian Paintball Official Circuit

[edit]

Raskal participated in the Malaysian Paintball Official Circuit (MPOC), one of Malaysia's principal competitive paintball series during the 2000s.

Contemporary tournament records identify the team competing in the circuit's Open Division in 2007.

A recorded match against Northern Shield ended in a 5–0 victory for Raskal.[3]

The team subsequently became a regular contender in the circuit's leading divisions.

2008 tournament season

[edit]

The 2008 season was a notable period in Raskal's domestic tournament history.

In January, the team won the Pendekar division at the Pengerang Open.[4]

Raskal also achieved victories at multiple rounds of the Malaysian Paintball Official Circuit, including the second leg and an event held in Penang.

At the conclusion of the season, Raskal finished third overall in MPOC Division 1.[5]

These results established the team among Malaysia's leading competitive paintball squads during the period.

World Cup Asia

[edit]

2013 Division 1 final

[edit]

Raskal Malaysia competed at the 2013 Paintball World Cup Asia in Langkawi.

The team reached the Division 1 final against South African team Dynamix.

According to Malaysian newspaper mStar, Dynamix defeated Raskal 4–3, leaving the Malaysian team as Division 1 runner-up.[6]

The same report described Raskal as having competed on the Asian tournament circuit since 2004.

This account is consistent with earlier evidence placing the team's formation around 2003, although the exact date of its first competitive appearance remains uncertain.

The 2013 result was a significant international achievement for Raskal, demonstrating its competitiveness against teams from outside Asia.

International tournament victories in 2014

[edit]

Raskal Malaysia continued competing internationally during 2014.

A report published by Xtion Paintball in June 2014 identified Raskal Malaysia as the field's house team and congratulated it for a series of tournament victories.[7]

The reported results included:

Date Tournament Location Result
March 2014 Singapore Paintball Series Singapore Tournament winner
April 2014 India National Paintball League Open India Tournament winner
June 2014 Napshot Invitational Paintball Challenge Malaysia Tournament winner

The three victories demonstrated Raskal's continued international activity and its relationship with the regional tournament paintball community.

Xtion Paintball's description of Raskal as its house team also provides evidence of an established association between the team and the Malaysian paintball venue.

The precise divisions contested at each event require further verification.

Relationship with Xtion Paintball

[edit]

Origins at Sunway Xtreme Park

[edit]

Xtion Paintball was closely associated with Raskal's early development.

The team's reported formation in 2003 involved players who regularly participated in games at the Sunway Xtreme Park facility.

By 2014, Xtion Paintball publicly identified Raskal Malaysia as its house team.

This relationship connected the team to one of the venues involved in the development of Malaysian competitive paintball.

House team status

[edit]

The description of Raskal as Xtion Paintball's house team indicates a recognised association between the team and the field.

However, the available sources do not establish the precise nature of the arrangement, including whether it involved formal sponsorship, team management, equipment support or ownership.

The relationship should therefore be distinguished from any unverified claim that Xtion Paintball owned or operated the team.

Relationship with Raskal Sports

[edit]

Establishment of Raskal Sports

[edit]

Raskal Sports Sdn Bhd was established in Malaysia in 2016 as a paintball equipment distribution and retail business.[8]

The company's establishment occurred approximately thirteen years after the reported formation of the original Raskal tournament team.

The earlier team and the later company share the Raskal name and an association with Malaysian tournament paintball.

However, the company's 2016 establishment date should not be used as the founding date of the tournament team.

The identities of the company's founders and the precise organisational relationship between the original team and Raskal Sports have not yet been independently established.

Raskal Sports-sponsored competition

[edit]

The Raskal name continued to appear in international tournament paintball after the company's establishment.

In 2018, Planet Eclipse reported that Raskal Sports assembled a competitive squad from its sponsored players for an NXL Asia tournament in Australia.[9]

According to the manufacturer, the team won the Open Division, defeating its opponent 4–0 in the final.

The result demonstrates the later company's direct involvement in supporting a Raskal-branded tournament team.

It does not, by itself, establish that the 2018 squad was an uninterrupted continuation of the original team formed around 2003.

Historical distinction

[edit]

For historical purposes, Raskal Malaysia and Raskal Sports should be treated as related but distinct subjects.

Raskal Malaysia refers to the tournament team and its competitive history.

Raskal Sports refers to the company established in 2016 and its equipment distribution, retail and tournament organisation activities.

Further research into the founders, management and playing personnel of both organisations may clarify the extent of their continuity.

The following table summarises documented tournament appearances and results.

The table includes the 2018 Raskal Sports-sponsored result for historical context. It should not be interpreted as evidence of an unchanged playing roster or continuous team organisation from 2003.

Team identity

[edit]

Name

[edit]

The team has appeared in historical sources under the names Raskal, Team Raskal and Raskal Malaysia.

The use of Raskal Malaysia helped distinguish the Malaysian team in international tournament listings.

The name subsequently became associated with the Raskal Sports business.

Playing personnel

[edit]

The complete playing roster of the original Raskal Malaysia team has not yet been reconstructed.

Contemporary event registration records, archived team websites and historical tournament photographs may provide further information about individual players.

Without such documentation, later Raskal Sports-sponsored players should not automatically be identified as members of the original team.

Organisational continuity

[edit]

Although the Raskal name has been used across multiple periods of Malaysian tournament paintball, continuous operation under the same management has not been established.

The original team was active by 2005 and remained associated with Xtion Paintball in 2014.

A Raskal Sports-sponsored team competed internationally in 2018.

The extent of personnel or management continuity between these periods remains a subject for further research.

Historical significance

[edit]

Raskal Malaysia was among the Malaysian tournament teams participating in the development of competitive paintball during the 2000s.

Its early association with Xtion Paintball connects it to one of the venues involved in establishing the country's tournament paintball community.

Its participation in the 2005 Millennium Series Campaign Cup illustrates the international ambitions of Malaysian teams during this period.

Domestic results in 2008 and the 2013 World Cup Asia Division 1 runner-up finish established Raskal as a competitive team within Malaysia and the wider Asian tournament circuit.

Its international tournament victories in 2014 further demonstrated the team's regional activity.

The subsequent emergence of Raskal Sports and its involvement in sponsoring tournament players also illustrates the relationship between competitive teams and commercial paintball businesses in Malaysia.
