2009 Hamilton 3s
Hamilton 3s was a three-player tournament paintball competition held in the Hamilton region of New Zealand during the late 2000s.
Contemporary discussions from the NZ Paintball Message Boards document competitions during 2008 and 2009. The series was also referred to as HXC 3s in a December 2008 tournament report.[1]
The surviving records include complete placings for the opening round of the 2009 competition, held on 22 February 2009.[2]
History
2008 season
The Hamilton three-player competition was active during 2008.
A contemporary report published on 8 December 2008, titled HXC 3S Wrap Up and Photos, thanked participants and supporters following a tournament earlier that month.[1]
The report acknowledged assistance with organising the events and support from SCK Paintball, which provided prizes.
The organisers also confirmed their intention to continue running three-player competitions during 2009.
Complete results from the 2008 events have not been recovered.
2009 season
In January 2009, plans were announced for an expanded Hamilton 3s competition.[3]
The proposed changes included monthly tournaments, different paintballs, new promotional materials and two Spyder Cup playing fields.
The original announcement advertised:
- Three-player tournament competition.
- Entry fee of NZ$30.
- Paintballs priced at NZ$90 per case.
- Regular events throughout the year.
More than ten teams were reported to have expressed interest before the opening tournament.[3]
Round 1: 22 February 2009
The opening round took place on 22 February 2009.
A results announcement published that afternoon recorded six participating teams.[2]
SCK Factory won the tournament, followed by CL Mafia and The NGN.
| Position | Team |
|---|---|
| 1 | SCK Factory |
| 2 | CL Mafia |
| 3 | The NGN |
| 4= | Arch NME |
| 4= | Unthinkables |
| 6 | The Filthy Mexicans |
The fourth-place tie is reproduced from the original results announcement.
The organisers also published video footage of the competition, including tournament highlights and a time-lapse recording of field preparation.[2]
Subsequent rounds
A second round was advertised for 22 March 2009.[4]
The surviving forum index confirms that a discussion concerning the proposed event existed by 5 March 2009.
However, the complete discussion and final results have not yet been recovered.
The available records do not establish whether the proposed monthly schedule was completed or identify the final 2009 championship standings.
Competition organisation
The Hamilton 3s was organised as a local tournament competition intended to provide regular opportunities for teams to play competitive three-player paintball.
The surviving December 2008 report acknowledged equipment and prize support from SCK Paintball.[1]
The February 2009 event announcement also acknowledged the refereeing and field preparation undertaken by participants.[2]
The precise ownership and location of the playing field have not been independently established.
Historical records
The principal surviving sources are archived discussions from the NZ Paintball Message Boards, hosted on Yuku.
These records document tournament organisation during 2008, plans for the 2009 season and the complete placings for the February 2009 opening round.
Earlier forum archives also contain references to a Hamilton three-player series during 2005. The relationship between that competition and the later Hamilton 3s has not been established.[5]
