Ryan Moorhead is an American professional paintball player and paintball industry professional. Competing professionally since 2003, Moorhead has represented teams including the All Americans, Miami Effect, Philadelphia Americans, Edmonton Impact and Houston Heat. His career includes professional tournament and series championships in Paintball Sports Promotions (PSP) and the National Xball League (NXL).[1][2]

Moorhead was a member of the Philadelphia Americans team that won the 2009 PSP professional season championship and the Houston Heat organisation that won consecutive NXL World Cup titles in 2018 and 2019.[3][4]

Playing career

[edit]

Early career

[edit]

Moorhead began playing paintball in 1997 and entered professional competition in 2003 with the All Americans organisation. He subsequently played for Miami Effect before returning to the Philadelphia Americans.[1]

By 2008, Moorhead was an established member of Philadelphia's professional X-Ball roster. He was selected alongside teammate Konstantin Fedorov to represent the Eastern Conference in the 2008 NXL All-Star competition.[5]

Philadelphia Americans (2008–2009)

[edit]

Moorhead competed for Philadelphia Americans during the team's later professional championship period.

The 2009 roster included Tim Montressor, Konstantin Fedorov, Chad George, Jason Edwards, Samuel Monville, Ross O'Rourke, Patrick Roberts and Todd Hugo.[6]

Philadelphia won the opening PSP Phoenix Open and subsequently finished second at the Mid-Atlantic Open and third at the Chicago Open.

At the 2009 PSP World Cup, Philadelphia faced Boston Red Legion in the professional final.

Contemporary WARPIG coverage described Moorhead playing the snake position during the deciding match, which Boston ultimately won. Philadelphia finished second at the event.[7]

Despite losing the World Cup final, Philadelphia won the 2009 PSP professional season championship, finishing with 370 ranking points ahead of Boston Red Legion on 347.5.[3]

Edmonton Impact (2010–2013)

[edit]

Moorhead joined Canadian professional team Edmonton Impact for the 2010 season.

He was part of the squad that won the 2010 PSP Phoenix Open, Impact's first professional tournament victory in the PSP. Contemporary coverage identified Moorhead as a prominent player on the Dorito side during the event.[8]

He continued competing for Edmonton Impact through 2013, appearing in PSP tournaments and international competitions.[9]

Houston Heat (2014–present)

[edit]

On 29 December 2013, Houston Heat announced the signing of Moorhead, Tim Montressor and Greg Siewers for the 2014 season. The three players had previously competed together for Edmonton Impact.[10]

Moorhead became a regular member of Houston Heat's professional roster.

In 2014, contemporary tournament coverage highlighted his attacking play alongside Chad George on the snake side during the PSP Chicago Open.[11]

He remained with Heat following the transition from PSP to the modern NXL in 2015.

In 2018, Houston Heat won the NXL World Cup, defeating Moscow Red Legion 5–4 in the professional final. The victory also secured the team's overall NXL professional series championship.[12]

Heat won the World Cup again in 2019, defeating Moscow Red Legion 7–6 in the final.[13]

Moorhead was also a member of Heat's championship-winning team at the 2021 NXL Mid-Atlantic Major, where Houston defeated Edmonton Impact in the professional final.[14]

He continued competing for Houston Heat during the 2020s. PBLeagues records confirm his participation in the 2026 NXL season, including the Lone Star Open in September.[15]

Playing style

[edit]

Moorhead has primarily been associated with attacking positions in professional X-Ball, including the snake and Dorito sides.

Contemporary reporting from 2009 documented his snake-side play for Philadelphia Americans, while coverage of the 2010 PSP Phoenix Open highlighted his performance on the Dorito side for Edmonton Impact.[7][8]

The 2019 NXL broadcast scouting report described Moorhead as a versatile attacking player capable of performing in multiple front-field positions.[16]

Paintball industry career

[edit]

Alongside his tournament career, Moorhead has worked in the paintball equipment industry.

He was employed in production at Smart Parts and has been associated with DLX Technologies and its Luxe paintball marker range.[1][2]

Moorhead contributed to the development of the DLX Luxe IDOL, released in 2024. DLX's product documentation credits him with a significant role in the project's development, drawing upon his experience with previous generations of Luxe markers.[17]

His industry involvement has also included promoting and discussing paintball equipment through interviews and podcasts.[18]
