Extreme Paintball (Ta' Qali)
Extreme Paintball is a recreational paintball operator based at Ta' Qali, Malta. Also known as Extreme Paintball Malta and Extreme Paintball Club, it is one of the longest-documented commercial paintball operators in the country. The business is associated with Raymond Galea and Surplus & Adventure, an outdoor equipment retailer based in Mosta.[1]
The operator historically maintained a paintball arena at Ta' Qali and subsequently relocated its playing facilities to Adventure Hub Malta.
History
[edit]Early operations
[edit]The operator's published history identifies Raymond Galea as the founder of the venture and describes its connection with his Surplus & Adventure business.[1]
Video footage published in April 2009 documents a paintball field under development at Ta' Qali, although the available description does not establish whether it was operated by Extreme Paintball.[2]
By 2011, Extreme Paintball was documented as an established recreational facility. A Malta.com tourism listing described organised paintball games, group packages, equipment rental and night-time events. The listing retains a visitor comment dated 29 November 2011.[3]
A February 2012 video titled "Extreme Malta Paintball - WSC vs PTL/IBM" documents a social paintball event at the Ta' Qali venue.[4]
Organised paintball and club activity
[edit]Extreme Paintball was involved in Malta's developing organised paintball community.
A promotional poster for an event scheduled on 25 June 2011 advertised a five-player tournament at Extreme Paintball Range, Ta' Qali, under Malta Official Paintball League (MOPL) branding. The event was promoted in aid of Puttinu Cares. MAAC published results for its first MOPL series on 26 June 2011.[5]
Extreme also developed a membership offering for regular players. A membership programme announced in March 2015 offered discounted playing sessions for members, including players who owned their equipment. A membership form publicised in January 2016 listed an annual fee of €60.
These activities distinguished the club's regular-player community from its commercial recreational bookings.
Facilities
[edit]The original Ta' Qali venue featured outdoor playing areas with artificial obstacles and defensive positions suitable for recreational and scenario-style paintball.[3]
Extreme continued to offer rental paintball and organised group activities throughout the 2010s. A May 2016 report in the Times of Malta documented a paintball outing at Ta' Qali involving 16 Famalco employees, although it did not identify the operator by name.[6]
Relocation to Adventure Hub
[edit]On 16 October 2023, Extreme Paintball announced that bookings were open for new playing facilities at Adventure Hub, Ta' Qali.
The operator subsequently promoted a netted playing area incorporating inflatable paintball bunkers. The new facilities represented a development beyond the operator's earlier recreational arena.
The Adventure Hub venue is identified on the operator's official website and in its subsequent promotional material. Its address is Triq Durumblat, Ta' Qali.[7]
The operator continued advertising recreational paintball, group bookings and low-impact paintball activities in 2026.[8]
Historical significance
[edit]Extreme Paintball has played a sustained role in Malta's recreational paintball industry and was also a venue for organised local competitive play.
Its history illustrates the relationship between commercial paintball operations, equipment retailers and Malta's early organised paintball community.
The operator's precise opening date has not been independently established. Its 2023 promotional material included a fifteenth-anniversary claim, suggesting an origin around 2008, but this does not establish the date of its first paid game or first Ta' Qali location.
