The 1993 NPPL Chicago Open, advertised in contemporary reporting as the Chicago Cup, was a paintball tournament held in Illinois during the inaugural season of the National Professional Paintball League (NPPL). Produced by Jerry Braun, it was advertised for 23–25 July 1993.[1]

The All Americans won the professional 10-man division, while the Palm Beach Predators won the amateur 10-man division.[2]

Organisation

A contemporary notice in Action Pursuit Games named Braun as the tournament's producer and registration contact. Swarm and Chicago Aftershock were scheduled to provide referees.[1]

Competitors were allowed to bring their own paintballs. Paint was also to be available for purchase at the event, with the notice encouraging teams to buy on site.[1]

The Chicago tournament followed the Boston Cup in the advertised programme and preceded the World Cup, which was scheduled for September.[1]

Competition

An NPPL report published in Paintball News on 25 September 1993 stated that 88 per cent of teams at Chicago advanced beyond the preliminary round. The report contrasted this with semi-final advancement figures of 66 per cent at Dallas and 69 per cent at Boston.[3]

The same report stated that only seven teams across the entire Chicago field accumulated more than 300 points in preliminary play.[3]

The league presented these figures as evidence of competitive balance under its rules and refereeing arrangements. Its report also identified Arch Angels of Missouri as eighth-place amateur finishers.[3]
