Introduction of paintball (2002–2005)
Early development
Paintball was introduced commercially to Iran during the early 2000s.
In November 2002, The Christian Science Monitor reported on the newly opened Matrix paintball complex in Tehran. Its founder, Hamid Nikpour, had brought equipment from Canada and obtained permission from Iranian authorities to operate the sport. The venue occupied a covered former car park and used artificial terrain and obstacles.[1]

One of the earliest documented operators was Hamid Nikpour, an Iranian entrepreneur who had lived in Canada. Nikpour imported paintball equipment and established a playing facility in Tehran in 2002.
Women's participation was documented by October 2005, when The Iranian published photographs credited to Nikpour showing a women's paintball team in Iran.[2]

Contemporary reporting by Agence France-Presse and The Christian Science Monitor described the opening of the Matrix paintball centre, located in a converted covered parking facility in Tehran.
A BBC Persian interview published on 4 February 2007 featured Babak Esmaeili and Behnaz Foroutan, identified respectively as men's and women's team captains. The interview discussed Datis's Asian tournament success and explicitly described women's competitions in Iran.[6]

The facility covered approximately 2,600 square metres and featured artificial terrain, buildings and other obstacles. Its equipment reportedly included 120 paintball markers imported from Canada.[1][5]
National league development
The importation of paintball markers required approval from Iranian authorities, who examined the equipment before allowing its use.
Archived Iran Paintball Association records document separate men's divisions and a women's competition within the national league programme by 2011.[3]

Nikpour also discussed the development of organised teams capable of competing internationally.[1]
At the Babolsar event held from 14 to 16 December 2011, the association reported the second men's round alongside the first women's round. Datis won the men's first division ahead of Hype and Persian Legend Two. Diako led the second division, followed by Soheil and Tornado. Datis, Javidan and Roham Babolsar took the women's podium.[3]

Women's participation was documented within the following years. In October 2005, Iranian.com published a photographic feature showing a women's paintball team in Iran.[6]
The association's entry conditions for the women's league required registration under INPL Division 2 rules. This specified the rules used for the women's competition rather than placing its teams within the men's second-division standings.[7]

Development of tournament paintball (2006–2011)
In August 2012, the association announced that it could not stage the national league under its existing financial arrangements. Its notice cited losses, operating costs and exchange-rate increases, and published a breakdown of projected income and expenditure.[8]

Iranian tournament paintball developed rapidly during the mid-2000s, with teams participating in domestic competitions and international events.
A September 2013 announcement proposed restarting INPL using an iBall format and weekly matches. It also described selecting national-team players through the league.[9]

The Tehran-based team Datis became a prominent representative of Iranian paintball internationally.
An association report preserved in November 2014 described a premier competition involving eight teams over seven rounds. It named Datis, Ariaman and Griffin as the leading teams and described selecting players for the national squad through league competition.[10]

At the 2006 World Cup Asia, held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Datis won the Division 1 championship and secured the overall Paintball Asia League Series season title.[7]
PALM competition
Datis repeated its PALS overall championship success in 2007 and reached the World Cup Asia Division 1 final that year, losing to South Africa's Reaper.[3]
PALM provided another route for Iranian tournament competition. In March 2009, Mehr reported that the American Ironmen had won the Golden Palm tournament at Kish Olympic Stadium, with Datis finishing second. The report recorded nine foreign and twenty Iranian teams.[11]

Domestic competition also developed through the Iran Paintball League.
Later domestic competition operated under the PALM name. A Planet Eclipse report published on 8 October 2017 recorded Tehran Datis winning Division 1 at the penultimate PALM event, while Shemiranat Datis finished second in Division 2. These were event results reported before the season's final round.[4]

In March 2010, ProPaintball.com reported that Datis had completed an undefeated four-event domestic season, defeating Persian Legend in the final tournament.
PALM and the Paintball Asia League Series (PALS) are distinct competitions.

The report included an interview with Iranian player Aco Amir, who discussed the country's tournament structure, competitive development and participation in overseas events.[8]

International success (2010–2013)
The Iran Paintball Association (انجمن پینت بال جمهوری اسلامی ایران) has administered national competition, published rules and entry requirements, and organised women's participation. Its archived reports identify it within the Iran Sport for All Federation's structure.[3][7][8]

Iranian teams achieved several major results in Asian competition during the early 2010s.
Competition formats and divisions have varied. Alongside the national league and PALM events, PFA records document team and individual competitions using mechanical and electronic markers. National and Tehran provincial PFA programmes published separate results.[5][12]

At the 2010 World Cup Asia in Kuala Lumpur, Datis won the Division 1 championship, defeating international opposition including teams from France, Australia and Malaysia.
Women's paintball
Another Iranian team, Joubin, finished second in Division 3 at the same tournament.[4]

Datis successfully defended its World Cup Asia Division 1 title in 2011 at Langkawi, Malaysia.

Led by Babak Datis Esmaily, the team defeated South Africa's Reaper 4–1 in the final. The victory earned Datis the championship trophy and US$50,000 in prize money.[9]

Iranian success extended to the lower divisions. Diako won the Division 3 championship at the 2011 World Cup Asia.[10]

Datis also represented Iran in the 2011 Intercontinental Cup, held alongside World Cup Asia, finishing third behind France's TonTon and the American Ironmen.[10]

Iranian teams continued participating in PALS events in subsequent years, including tournaments in Malaysia and Thailand.[11]

Domestic competition and PALM (2010s–2020s)
Iranian tournament competition developed through multiple leagues and event organisations.

The Paintball League Middle East (PALM) operated tournaments in Iran during the 2010s. The competition was separate from the Paintball Asia League Series, despite the similarity in their acronyms.

PALM maintained an Iranian event programme, including competitions during 2016, 2017 and 2018.[12]

In October 2017, Planet Eclipse reported that Tehran Datis had won a Division 1 PALM tournament, while Shemiranat Datis finished second in Division 2.[13]

The national tournament scene continued into the 2020s.

Iranian league records for 2025 documented men's premier, men's second-division and women's competitions. Participating organisations included Datis Tehran, Phoenix, Espad, Persian Gulf and Singo, alongside other teams.[14]

Organisation
The Iran Paintball Association (انجمن پینت بال جمهوری اسلامی ایران) operates within Iran's domestic sports structure.

The association identifies 2002 as its founding year and describes responsibilities covering paintball clubs, competitions and training for referees, players and operators.[2]
Women's paintball in Iran

Its activities have included organising national tournaments, developing regulations and providing coaching and refereeing education.
National competition, 2011–2014
Iranian paintball competitions have operated under several names and organisational structures, including the Iran National Paintball League and PALM.
The first women's national league round documented in the association's recovered results took place in Babolsar from 14 to 16 December 2011. Datis finished first, Javidan second and Roham Babolsar third.[3]

The Iran National Paintball League has featured multiple competitive divisions, with tournaments held in different Iranian cities.
On 17 May 2012, the opening women's round of the Iranian calendar year 1391 took place in Tehran. Seven teams represented five provinces. Datis Alborz won, followed by Javidan Tehran and Titan Qazvin.[13]

The association's website has also published material relating to paintball safety, equipment regulation, field operations and coaching qualifications.[15]
In 2014, the association introduced a three-player women's programme, with three reserves permitted and three rounds planned. Its opening event took place in Karaj on 18 April. Six teams competed: Ariaman One finished first, Datis second and Ariaman Two third, followed by Amertat, Adrenaline and Griffin.[14][15]

Women's paintball
Activity during 2016–2017
Women have participated in Iranian paintball since at least the mid-2000s.
Contemporary reports describe difficulties in organising women's competition during this period. In February 2016, Hamid Nikpour told the Young Journalists Club that the association had not managed to organise women's competition that year, citing venue and participation difficulties. In April, women's official Leila Niyam discussed domestic activity but identified weak coordination in attending competitions as a problem.[16][17]

A photographic report published by Iranian.com in October 2005 documented an Iranian women's paintball team.[6]
Women's participation also extended beyond the national league. Ferdowsi University of Mashhad's sports channel published women's paintball competition notices and reports in 2016–2017. In December 2017, it published the names of the women's podium groups from its public-sport festival.[18]

By 2012, women's tournament paintball was firmly established within the country's national league structure.
IWPL and PFA, 2018–2020
In February 2012, the Iranian National Paintball League held an event featuring 26 teams across three divisions, including a dedicated women's competition.
In December 2018, Hamshahri reported on the second event of the national women's league under the initials IWPL, alongside a separate PFA competition. In the electronic three-player competition, Datis finished first, Griffin second, Ariaman third and Kartal fourth.[5]

Datis Girls, the women's team associated with the Datis organisation, won the women's championship for the Iranian calendar year 1390.[16]
Original PFA Media captions published on 1 December 2018 independently identify the second IWPL event as an electronic-marker competition and confirm Datis, Griffin and Ariaman as its top three.[19]

International participation
PFA, expanded in Persian as Paintball for All, also operated women's mechanical-marker competition. Its overall results for the Iranian calendar year 1397, covering five rounds, placed Shahab One first, Shahab Three second and Shahab Two third in the three-player competition. Raheleh Hajian won the individual mechanical standings, followed by Mahdieh Darkhah and Mahsa Moradi.[12]

Datis Girls also competed internationally, entering the World Cup Asia in Langkawi, Malaysia.
The final round, held on 25 January 2019, had a different three-player podium: Shahab Golestan, Shahid Nikpasand vocational school and Shahab One. The final-round results and overall season standings therefore represent separate achievements.[12]

The team participated in Division 3 in 2012, finishing 44th among 46 competitors.
National women's PFA results continued into early 2020. At the fourth round on 6 February 2020 at Takhti Stadium, Tehran, Shahab won the mechanical three-player competition ahead of Hyrcania One and Hyrcania Two. Datis Tehran won the electronic three-player competition, followed by Datis Shemiranat and Number One.[20][21]

Datis Girls returned to World Cup Asia in 2013, improving to 25th among 54 teams.[17]
Later competition
These appearances placed Iranian female players in international open-division competition alongside teams from Asia and other regions.
On 27 December 2023, Bandar Abbas hosted the fourth round of the women's electronic three-player league, with six teams participating. IRIB reported Singo Elite as league champion with 377 points, followed by Belona of Rasht with 315 and Singo Persian Gulf with 215.[22]

Women's paintball has remained part of Iran's national competition structure.
International competition
Records from the 2025 national league included a women's premier division featuring Datis, Singo, Espad and Arya.[14]
Datis became a prominent Iranian representative in Asian tournament paintball. Contemporary reporting records its World Cup Asia Division 1 and overall PALS championship success in 2006, followed by another overall PALS title in 2007.[23][24]

International tournament results
At World Cup Asia in 2010, Datis won Division 1 and another Iranian team, Joubin, finished second in Division 3.[25]

Selected documented results by Iranian teams include:
Datis retained the World Cup Asia Division 1 title in 2011, defeating South Africa's Reaper 4–1 in the final. Diako won Division 3, while Datis finished third in the accompanying Intercontinental Cup.[26][27]

{| class="wikitable"
Datis Girls also competed internationally. PBLeagues records place the team 44th of 46 in World Cup Asia Division 3 in 2012 and 25th of 54 in 2013.[28]

Iranian paintball encompasses the development, organisation and competitive history of paintball in Iran. Commercial paintball was documented in Tehran in 2002, followed by domestic leagues, international tournament participation and dedicated women's competitions.[1][2][3]

Iranian competition has included the Iran National Paintball League (INPL), Paintball League Middle East (PALM), Paintball for All (PFA) and women's events identified as IWPL. These names describe different competition programmes and should not be treated as interchangeable.[3][4][5]

For the national directory and subject, provincial and historical categories, see Paintball in Iran.

History

Early development

In November 2002, The Christian Science Monitor reported on the newly opened Matrix paintball complex in Tehran. Its founder, Hamid Nikpour, had brought equipment from Canada and obtained permission from Iranian authorities to operate the sport. The venue occupied a covered former car park and used artificial terrain and obstacles.[1]

Women's participation was documented by October 2005, when The Iranian published photographs credited to Nikpour showing a women's paintball team in Iran.[2]

A BBC Persian interview published on 4 February 2007 featured Babak Esmaeili and Behnaz Foroutan, identified respectively as men's and women's team captains. The interview discussed Datis's Asian tournament success and explicitly described women's competitions in Iran.[6]

National league development

Archived Iran Paintball Association records document separate men's divisions and a women's competition within the national league programme by 2011.[3]

The association's entry conditions for the women's league required registration under INPL Division 2 rules. This specified the rules used for the women's competition rather than placing its teams within the men's second-division standings.[7]

In August 2012, the association announced that it could not stage the national league under its existing financial arrangements. Its notice cited losses, operating costs and exchange-rate increases, and published a breakdown of projected income and expenditure.[8]

A September 2013 announcement proposed restarting INPL using an iBall format and weekly matches. It also described selecting national-team players through the league.[9]

An association report preserved in November 2014 described a premier competition involving eight teams over seven rounds. It named Datis, Ariaman and Griffin as the leading teams and described selecting players for the national squad through league competition.[10]

PALM competition

PALM provided another route for Iranian tournament competition. In March 2009, Mehr reported that the American Ironmen had won the Golden Palm tournament at Kish Olympic Stadium, with Datis finishing second. The report recorded nine foreign and twenty Iranian teams.[11]

Later domestic competition operated under the PALM name. A Planet Eclipse report published on 8 October 2017 recorded Tehran Datis winning Division 1 at the penultimate PALM event, while Shemiranat Datis finished second in Division 2. These were event results reported before the season's final round.[4]

PALM and the Paintball Asia League Series (PALS) are distinct competitions.

Organisation

The Iran Paintball Association (انجمن پینت بال جمهوری اسلامی ایران) has administered national competition, published rules and entry requirements, and organised women's participation. Its archived reports identify it within the Iran Sport for All Federation's structure.[3][7][8]

Competition formats and divisions have varied. Alongside the national league and PALM events, PFA records document team and individual competitions using mechanical and electronic markers. National and Tehran provincial PFA programmes published separate results.[5][12]

National competition, 2011–2014

The first women's national league round documented in the association's recovered results took place in Babolsar from 14 to 16 December 2011. Datis finished first, Javidan second and Roham Babolsar third.[3]

On 17 May 2012, the opening women's round of the Iranian calendar year 1391 took place in Tehran. Seven teams represented five provinces. Datis Alborz won, followed by Javidan Tehran and Titan Qazvin.[13]

Activity during 2016–2017

Contemporary reports describe difficulties in organising women's competition during this period. In February 2016, Hamid Nikpour told the Young Journalists Club that the association had not managed to organise women's competition that year, citing venue and participation difficulties. In April, women's official Leila Niyam discussed domestic activity but identified weak coordination in attending competitions as a problem.[16][17]

Women's participation also extended beyond the national league. Ferdowsi University of Mashhad's sports channel published women's paintball competition notices and reports in 2016–2017. In December 2017, it published the names of the women's podium groups from its public-sport festival.[18]

IWPL and PFA, 2018–2020

In December 2018, Hamshahri reported on the second event of the national women's league under the initials IWPL, alongside a separate PFA competition. In the electronic three-player competition, Datis finished first, Griffin second, Ariaman third and Kartal fourth.[5]

Original PFA Media captions published on 1 December 2018 independently identify the second IWPL event as an electronic-marker competition and confirm Datis, Griffin and Ariaman as its top three.[19]

The final round, held on 25 January 2019, had a different three-player podium: Shahab Golestan, Shahid Nikpasand vocational school and Shahab One. The final-round results and overall season standings therefore represent separate achievements.[12]

Later competition

On 27 December 2023, Bandar Abbas hosted the fourth round of the women's electronic three-player league, with six teams participating. IRIB reported Singo Elite as league champion with 377 points, followed by Belona of Rasht with 315 and Singo Persian Gulf with 215.[22]

International competition

Datis became a prominent Iranian representative in Asian tournament paintball. Contemporary reporting records its World Cup Asia Division 1 and overall PALS championship success in 2006, followed by another overall PALS title in 2007.[23][24]

At World Cup Asia in 2010, Datis won Division 1 and another Iranian team, Joubin, finished second in Division 3.[25]

Datis retained the World Cup Asia Division 1 title in 2011, defeating South Africa's Reaper 4–1 in the final. Diako won Division 3, while Datis finished third in the accompanying Intercontinental Cup.[26][27]

Datis Girls also competed internationally. PBLeagues records place the team 44th of 46 in World Cup Asia Division 3 in 2012 and 25th of 54 in 2013.[28]

Publications and online communities

Iranian paintball developed its own publications and online sources. Wipe Paintball Magazine has surviving Joomag listings for issues bearing 2012 dates and an issue numbered 15 listed in January 2015. The publicly accessible sample of issue 15 contains both Persian and English material.[29]

The historical Datis website published team profiles, domestic and international news, photographs and links to a phpBB discussion forum and a Datis Yahoo group. Its archived pages preserve material from the 2000s and early 2010s.[30][31]

Persian-language club blogs also recorded local activity and reproduced competition announcements. These included Free4Paintball and Team Antimatter, whose archive preserves the 2013 INPL restart announcement.[9][32]
